We came here recently for a weekend brunch while in the area. Despite the warm weather, we sat in the garden out back, which was comfortable. We appreciated the fans set up to keep the air circulating. Service was very attentive while we were there. Everyone with whom we interacted was gracious, friendly and attentive. Really, no complaints about service. The food? We had some hits and some misses. The mussels were a hit and the portion was generous. The fries were great but some crusty French bread would have been a good addition, to help soak up the flavorful broth. The Merguez sandwich was a miss. Despite the menu stating that it was served on a baguette (and picture on Yelp of other diners receiving the sandwich on a baguette), ours was served on ciabatta. Really, not the same thing. We did not say anything at the time but we would not have ordered it had we known. Total disappointment. Also, the person on our party that ordered this sandwich found the fries way too salty. Luckily, the attentive staff kept the water refills flowing. I doubt we would return to this restaurant in the future the next time we're in the area, despite the friendly and attentive service. read more

Perfect drink for a late Sunday morning. Their Belgian hot chocolate tastes very European. Not the Hershey junk that the US has been accustomed to. I can't describe it as anything but the perfect cup of hot chocolate. The chocolate wasn't too rich nor too faint. The whipped cream was real whipped cream. The ambiance is a nice pocket of quietness and reflection in the upper east side. You can hear each other talk! An otherwise pleasant brunch ruined by a shock $9 (+ 30% tax and tip) double espresso! They brushed it off as "that's New York prices for ya" when being locals and not tourists, as they likely thought we were, in our many years living in NYC, we have found that most places charge a buck or so more and often nothing extra at all. They had good opportunity to have us leave feeling good and not ripped off but would rather be smarmy and spend the time pointing out how legit their coffee prices are. Sorry, but that coffee price doesn't compare at all with your fairly moderately priced menu or comparable NYC establishments. On top of it, the coffee was so small I questioned if it was even a double. On another note, though we were fine with the one hour limit they warned us of, so we could enjoy the winter garden, the service dropped off to almost non-existent after about 30 minutes, as they were more concerned with setting up for their function. We sat with dirty dishes for ages while empty tables were cleared all around us. I had to ask the busboys repeatedly for some basic service. I was really excited to try a Belgian restaurant in the city. I feel like there aren't that many that focus on Belgian food specifically. This restaurant has a nice covered outdoor eating area. The back garden decor is kind of thrown together so it's nice to sit outside, but I have definitely seen backyard seating. Now for the service. My boyfriend and I came at 3:30pm on a Sunday - past the brunch rush, or so we thought. We ordered two things, a sandwich and French toast, and it took 45+ minutes for us to get our food. It was actually absurd. There was no communication or acknowledgment of it. I get if we order drinks or an appetizer or come at 12-2 maybe, but for these menu items and everything, not cool. I was super frustrated by the time it came out, and the food didn't even make the wait worth it. French Toast: 8/10 The French toast was good but it wasn't anything special! I waited 45 minutes for three pieces of bread! The middle was really soft and eggy. I liked the whipped cream and how it soaked up the syrup. But again, it was slightly above average French toast. Brussels Style Merguez Sandwich / Sandwich with lamb sausage: 6/10 Disappointing. The whole sandwich did not taste good. The bread was stale, the sausage was thin and burned and DRY. There wasn't enough sauce and there was just iceberg lettuce and a messily tomato. I'm paying $25 for this??? After waiting 45 minutes? Pass. Please do not waste your money on this. Mediocre or worse. I stopped in for a post happy hour waffle after always walking by the sign outside and I paid $20 for what tasted like a waffle you make at a bad hotel continental breakfast. The ice cream it came with was a typical vanilla bean, nothing special. The strawberries and blueberries were at least fresh and the whipped cream seemed not out of a ready whip can. There is absolutely nothing stand-out about this waffle... it isn't something that should be advertised. In other news, there was a bug crawling on my table and when I told the waiter and he disposed of it he said "well, that's New York for ya!" which other comments indicate is a common excuse here with little sympathy for a bad experience. read more

Have always heard about this place as a solid brunch spot, but happened to come by for dinner last night. The mussles and croquetes were definitely a star. Though it was a bit odd that they had many brunch entrees on the dinner menu -- we seemed to accidentally order avocado toast, which was good but not neccessarily what I wanted for dinner. The cocktails we got were also quite strong. They don't list cocktails on their main menu and I would recommend sticking to that. Overall though very cute place with good food. Rarely am I in the upper east side but I'm here for an event and decided to grab brunch prior. I reviewed the menu and got a bit excited as it reminded me of Brussels. Though I wanted to give the waterzooie a second try, the brunch menu largely consisted of Belgium waffles and breakfast egg options. I started with a coffee and decided to go with the Belgium waffle with bacon and eggs with a side of avocado. It hit the spot. I met my mom here for breakfast. I chose a restaurant that had traditional European vibes, with a nordic influence. Last criteria: i wanted it to serve waffles, and guess what? We also got the breakfast sandwich which was jam packed with egg and avocado. Star was def the baguette tho - gotta love all dat crusty goodness. Such a lovely day for a drink at the bar and dining outside in the back garden area. You will be happy you came to this cute spot because the food is plentiful-- SO COME HUNGRY. I thoroughly enjoyed my mussels. I couldn't even finish them. They also come with a lot of fries, which were a tad on the cold side. I think the aiolis that came along with the ketchup were good and helped the fries out. The pancakes were huge, definitely shareable. Ambiance (5/5): The backyard garden is gorgeous with a floral setting and Manneken Pis statue in the back. The restaurant is tucked away from outside noise. The inside dining is ornate and welcoming. The street side outdoor dining is barebones and would suggest indoors or garden seating! The noise was low and provided a very cute and intimate dining experience! Service (5/5): The hostess was welcoming and the wait staff are extremely friendly and quick to provide help. Food: Belgian Cheese Croquettes (4/5): The dish comes with a count of 4. I was a fan of the crunchy outer of the croquettes and it complemented well with the unique peppercorn sauce. While the flavor was good, it relied on the sauce to really complete the bite. Carbonnade Flamande (4/5): The beef stew was delicious and had great depth to each bite! The portioning was plentiful and also came with the frites. The chunks of beef broke apart easily but was kind of dry in different bites and required it to soak in the stew before eating. Pomme Frites (6/5): The fries ever were out of this world AMAZING. Made a last minute reservation for four people on a Saturday morning without a fuss. Not the most spacious seating. Though we did sit comfortably around the middle narrow area of the restaurant. Decided on the Quiche Lorraine ($19) and a coffee ($3iah). The quiche itself is pretty flat - smothered in cheese, as to not see the ingredients underneath. Taste is fantastic; buttery and flaky crust and a well balanced interior. Way heavier than expected, with the nominal side salad a good palate cleanser. Also, B cafe has a nice thick, warm, and meaty Belgian stew. Lastly, they have a cold, sweet, BIG, dame blanche. B cafe also has good customer service and kind staff. The wait staff is extremely friendly. They greet you when you walk in and get you seated fast. But insider note, if you know how to ask you can get seated even without a reservation if it is not a particularly busy night. In addition, the food comes out quickly, and piping hot, ready to eat. However, they make sure that it doesn't come out all at once so you can enjoy a sitdown meal. Also, if you don't like to have a slow sit-down meal, they also have fast take out options. Not only is the food delectable, and the customer service favorable, but the atmosphere is wonderful. First, there are only about two dozen tables. Also, it's cozy and dim lit with exposed brick. Lastly, the bathroom is squeaky clean. As you can see, scrumptious food, supreme customer service and the cozy setting, make this an ideal spot for a special dinner. I really like this hidden Upper East Side gem. It's very unassuming from the outside but opens up into a white tablecloth establishment on the inside. The covered outdoor garden area is much more relaxed and I prefer it to the indoor space which can be a little too quiet for my liking. As for food, the moules frites are the star of the show. The fries came out hot and the white wine sauce was perfect. My friend ordered the burger which she enjoyed and the cheesecake was also a hit with the group (note: it comes with hazelnut ice cream). Was looking forward to trying this restaurant before our dinner reservations as I saw they had great happy hour deals and was very disappointed by the service. I walk in, say I have no reservation as I'm here for happy hour (which goes until 7 PM and you have to explicitly ask for what the happy hour deals are -- there's no physical menu) and the waitress/server looks at me, then shakes her head and SIGHS in loud disappointment. She takes me to the back area patio and just extends her arm pointing to the 4-5 vacant tables, doesn't look at me, and doesn't show me which table to go to. Confusing, and then I sit down at any table I choose and don't get spoken to for another 5-6 minutes until one other server realizes I am a customer. Eventually found a server/other waitress who was friendlier and actually attended to my table of me and my boyfriend. I haven't been to B Cafe in a few years, but thought it would be a great spot for a birthday brunch. I called to make a reservation for a large table in the garden, and the host took all the information and said they couldn't specify garden dining, or outdoor dining at all, though large parties are "usually seated in the garden or sidewalk shed." I clarified that I was only interested in dining in the garden - we weren't interested in dining on the sidewalk and definitely not open to indoor dining, which is why I was making a reservation. Two years into a pandemic, this doesn't seem like an unusual request. The host said she would make a note about our preference and have her manager call me the next evening to sort it out. No one called me back the next evening, or the day after that. I decided to host the brunch at another restaurant with garden dining. Flavors were more subtle compared to Flex Mussels, which was a nice change (you can taste the mussels themselves more). I chose this restaurant due to the proximity to the museum area on the UES. I like the French theme too. I could definitely see coming here for a romantic dinner. As for the food, they have a lot of brunch options! From traditional croquet monsieur to omelets and salads. My friend and I decided to split the scrambled eggs on a baguette. It came with frites and a small salad. We also got the garden salad to share. Everything was delicious! The sandwich had a great flavor from the spicy sauce as well as the cheese and avocado. The salad was good but could have benefited from a little more cheese in my opinion. The prices are a little high but I assume it's fairly typical for a French/nyc restaurant like this one. I had ordered the quiche with vegetables and when it did come out, there was an unappetizing thick layer of cheese, a nice flaky crust, and some vegetables encased in the creamy egg custard filling. It was served with a lackluster side salad of lightly dressed mixed greens and a big piece of tomato (which was odd). I organized a brunch for a group of ladies here on a Saturday morning- it was our first time trying this place and it didnt disappoint! I think the prices were reasonable considering it's the UES ~$20 for an entree and the food was pretty good/decent. It's mostly basic brunch items so I wouldnt expect a spectacular elaborate dish but it fits the bill for that you're looking for. atmosphere is pretty laid back and cozy. There's a bar area in front that seems a bit narrow with a dining area that is also on the smaller side (maybe 7-8 tables). They have an outdoor area which we declined bc it was extremely cold that day but I think it could have been nice on a warmer day! Disappointing evening. We had reservations but had to wait about 15 minutes for a table. This happens, not a big deal, but after we got seated no one came to take our order for over 20 minutes. We ultimately got our drinks and then had a long wait until we received our orders. My Impossible burger and fries were delicious and my friend's moules frites were excellent, except they did not bring him any bread or even a spoon with which to enjoy the wonderful broth. We couldn't get anyone's attention; staff seemed overwhelmed with the number of diners and were clearly under staffed.
