Decent BBQ at decent prices.
Rok J.

Bottom Line: Okay BBQ at commensurate prices. Stop if they're open I guess. You could do worse. Top Line: Sliced brisket sandwich meat was very, very tender and generous in portion size. Juiciness was at play as well. However, the smoke note on the meat was largely AWOL. On a smoke scale of zero (Grandma's Sunday beef pot roast) to ten (Texas burnt ends ambrosia), the brisket at Butts & Buns slid in around 3 or 4. So, great texture in the sandwich but registering as somewhat bland due to missing smokiness. Sweet'ish, tangy BBQ sauce with a nice spicy bite was a welcome addition. Bun was soft & tender, but proved insufficient to corral the load o' brisket draped in it due to sogging out from the BBQ sauce. Napkins & finger wash-up post meal were definitely called for. BBQ beans and cole slaw were pretty middle of the road. Decent flavor and texture. Good enough I guess we could say. But not going to redefine your culinary reality. Window crew was nominally friendly, though not particularly friendly nor engaging. They did their job, so that bar got cleared anyway.

Jr's No. 19 BBQ

Bottom Line: Same excellent food & customer service as when…read moreJr's No. 19 BBQ were located at Crosslake American Legion. This is the best BBQ I've found in the lake region of the north woods or anywhere else in the state for that matter. Their U.G.L.Y. Cheesecake Company desserts are not to be missed. Top Line: Dine-in dinner at Jr's "new digs" in the old Brick House Pizza building in Brainerd delivered well smoked meats, tasty sides, and wondrous desserts. Decor is tasteful and a solid step or three above most BBQ or pizza joints. Subdued color palette, spacious seating, and stone fireplace contributed to casual laid-back ambiance. Space was easily quiet enough for casual conversation, since most folks were doing take out orders & not populating the tables or booths. My dining partner had the chopstick chicken salad of romaine lettuce, Mandarin orange sections, tomatoes, walnuts, & chow mein noodles topped with lots of grilled chicken & an Asian dressing. Portion was generous, to say the least. I ordered a smoked brisket plate with a couple sides of choice (baked beans & cole slaw for me), oversized dinner bun, & their great BBQ sauce. Iced sweet tea came with refills. I split the house baked bun to make a brisket sandwich. Owner felt brisket was over cooked (which I didn't detect), so was generous to add a couple bones of their delightful pork ribs as compensation. Special cred for the puffy bun! Very light & tender interior of brioche weight, while having a toothsome texture. But the slightly crusty top and bottom easily handled my heavy handedness with BBQ sauce to keep the sandwich intact, even when drenched with the tangy slightly sweet sauce. Brisket was distinctly smoked & literally fall apart tender. Even the bark on the burnt ends parts of the portion were pliable & toothy (vs dried out & crunchy). There was plenty of brisket for the sandwich & a bit more. Ribs, plus leftover sides, came home for lunch tomorrow. Sides were solid on taste & texture. Cole slaw was crispy & well loaded with somewhat tame dressing. Bowl of beans had bits of smoked meat (brisket?) intermingled with the tasty beans. Portions of both were generous, which seems to be a repeating theme with Jr's. Dessert cheesecake was substantial while the filling had a surprisingly light texture for something with that much heft. The lightness kept it from weighing you down after a full meal. Flavor from my Caramel Chocolate Macchiato cheesecake punched well above its weight & remained impactful to the last bite. The dominant coffee flavor ran strong but didn't overwhelm the chocolate crumb crust completely. Nice balance! Their cookies at 2-for-a-buck are a "steal of the century" contender due to the very low cost for chocolate chip cookies with a butter rich & complex flavor profile that has some unusual notes coming into play. So if you're in the Brainerd area on vacation or attending a BIR event check out the gang at Jr's No. 19 BBQ at the old Brick House Pizza location for some great BBQ and cheesecake. If you're a pizza fiend or in need some baked goods, they may still be your huckleberry du jour.

Brisket plate was a small portion and a little dry. Will not come back…read more Overpriced for what it is and nothing special.
