You need some buttons? So? Sew buttons. Go anywhere else and your choice is limited. But at Buttonhall Palace you are only limited by your artistic creativity. Buttons first appeared in the Indus Valley (Pakistan/Northern India) approximately 2,000 BC although there is evidence they may have been used to button up something to cover your most important parts as far back as 7,000 years ago. Originally, shells were used which signified wealth and status. Press the Google button for a deeper dive into button history. Eventually, buttons appeared in Europe around the 13th Century. Apparently, it took a bit of doing to come up with the concept of pushing a Seed, Nut, Copper, Brass, Bronze, Coin, Stone, Glass, Nut, Shell, Wood, Twig, Antler, or Bone through a slit to secure one's shirt front and thus avoid looking like you dressed to attend the grand opening of the Tropicana Hotel in 1957 with your shirt wide open. Traditionally, buttons for men were utilitarian and decorative for women but through the millennia as genders have become blurry so did who secures what with what and who doesn't bother or care. And then there was plastic and concomitantly unusual hand made artistic buttons (enameled, hand painted, cloisonne) faded into the annals of couture history. But for some of us, buttons eventually became as important a fashion statement as any element of Beau Brummel's wardrobe. Button shapes shifted and new materials were introduced. Sadly, the options of where to purchase interesting, unique buttons has dwindled over the years. M and J Trimming in NYC has closed after 80 years leaving only Lou Lou Buttons to visit. The Button Store buttoned up leaving only Michael Levine in the heart of the Schmatta District to pick through. Good luck parking. Fortunately, for us button aficionados, Buttonhall Palace is still alive and well. The owner, Galia Gukaylo, aka Button Babe, has the eye, enthusiasm and the heart to drop whatever she is doing when someone enters the store (a horder's fever dream), and states, "I need buttons". Galia isn't bashful either. Pick out something that sucks, doesn't go and is just plain wrong and she is quick to let you know even though she will still sell it you anyway if you insist. She is relentless, tenacious, patient and determined to find exactly the perfect button for whatever you hauled across town to show her. Galia knows where every button is stocked or stacked and has an intimate relationship with the clutter in the store. Stand back and let her do what she does. Buttons are an art form and subjectively appreciated. For many who are regulars button shopping is also calming, therapeutic, and as exciting as a hunt for treasure, with a payoff for no one leaves dissatisfied and or unfulfilled. Galia The Fastener Fairy is all about helping you find something that will touch your heart and artistic soul and that applies to 2 $6 buttons or the 6 buttons that cost more than the custom bespoke Sport Jacket you brought in to find buttons for. Button hunting takes time and like dating or dining shouldn't be rushed. I'm not sure what I want but I do know what I don't want. So, I'll know it when I see it. That's the attitude you must bring to Buttonhall Palace along with the item(s) that needed a button upgrade in the first place. Galia's passion for her product is infectious. So bring that tired shirt with the boring buttons in addition to your sense of adventure. You will sparkle and shine when you leave. Buttonhall Palace is a chalice filled to the brim with the perfect trim.

I went to Buttonham Palace earlier this month looking for, well, buttons (with Joann's gone I've been working on finding new places for sewing supplies...). Specifically, I needed a certain style of silver metal button for the costume I was working on. This place has buttons in finishes and shapes I had never seen before at any store. Ms. Galia is so helpful and experienced, patiently giving advice to a beginner like me. I brought in my jacket for her to look at and without her I would have walked out of there with buttons too big for the holes! She knows where everything is, by myself it would have taken me forever to find what I was looking for. So, thank you very much! I will be back, and to anyone in Orange county (and beyond), if you're looking for buttons, this is the place! (And, as I promised you, Ms. Galia, a picture of my finished jacket!)

I wanted to upgrade my sweater from Amazon which originally had plastic gold buttons. The wonderful lady who was working there, Gallia (?) patiently helped me choose from the largest selection of buttons I've ever seen, and made great recommendations. She even offered to sew on the replacement buttons when she found out that I was from out of town and had no sewing supplies! My sweater looks so much classier now. This is a great way to enhance the look of a less expensive sweater!

    Buttons!

I came in looking for a gift for my mom's craft projects. She makes art from buttons, and always appreciates a gift of new, curious buttons. This was absolutely the place to come! The store's button room is full of thousands of types of buttons, arranged by color, material, etc. I can't imagine many places in the world with this much to choose from!

This afternoon I was on the search for a new dresser, and she was sassy and rude from the beginning. In our initial conversations when I was explaining to her I am trying to replace my existing dresser, she interrupted me mid sentence to say "well I don't KNOW what you have now" like girl... I'm literally explaining because YOU ASKED. I was still nice to her and afterwards my friend even asked me why I was so nice to her when she acted that way towards me. Now to the bad part... I found a dresser I was strongly considering to purchase and filming an in depth video to send my husband for confirmation, when Valerie comes up behind me saying something like "I need to get by you" (not excuse me or something neutral or going another way??) and TAPPED MY BUTT!!!!! She interrupted my video, she not only invaded my personal space but touched me inappropriately, and she had a bad attitude from the start. For context, I was bending slightly over while wearing a mid thigh length dress to show the specs of the dresser which made the interaction all the more inappropriate... I genuinely can't believe this happened and I hate to sound dramatic but this has unfortunately turned a good day sour. I did really like the dresser but was in shock after this interaction and left shortly after.

There are many vintage shops on Fourth Street, which makes me so grateful and happy. In the 1980s, we would need to drive up to Melrose Avenue in Hollywood to get this kind of quality vintage apparel and curios. Of course it was an adventure to get all the way up there into deep LA, find parking and browse through the goodness of vintage clothing - the styles, the colors, the textures, the worn in qualities which no current items can produce. Now we have the same opportunity in good old Long Beach. Starday Vintage Too serves as a sweet option for those curious about vintage, about old-fashioned style, and how to reinvent it today. Yesterday I cruised in to the shop, drawn in by the window display, which is ever changing, and always super -stylish. Their usage of mannequins is both haunting and delightful. It feels as though full stories are being lived out through their mannequins and the way they have styled them. The window display says so much about how the female owner (red haired and creative, Nicole) runs her shop: dynamic, thoughtful, retro-centric, and committed to the process of artistically offering vintage goods, highly curated, at fair prices. I just love to see their latest window designs, cruise around inside, chat with the friendly staff, and check out everything from studded belts to zipper boots, wigs to leopard print overcoats... just so amazing. To me, this shop sets the pace for the rest of retro row. It's the corner of 4th and Cherry, high traffic, highly visible and fantastic. Buying the goods isn't the point. Sniffing around, appreciating the items, their history, the store layout, and the entire in-store experience... Treat yourself to a visit. Good times!!

Beforehand, I called to ask if they had a bag limit (they don't). My closet purge was way overdue, so I had 3 rolling luggages that I brought in. Immediately when I entered, the vibe was off. The night crew was all males and they had very poor customer service! The manager was fine, but the two buyers could not stop rolling their eyes to eachother, looking super annoyed I brought in 3 suitcases. They would constantly look at eachother, then me, like speaking to eachother telepathically, probably cursing me out silently for making their jobs harder. The two buyers was a Latino guy with longer hair and facial piercings, and a white skinny tall guy with longer hair. Here's the thing, I know it's a lot to sift through and it's not what you wanna be doing on a Friday night, but I drove far to get here and I'm not going to be bringing 2 bags at a time. It's also not my fault they don't have a bag limit. It was a Friday night and the store was DEAD mind you. This was so unlike my previous experiences a year+ ago, the crew working was either mixed gender or girls and they have always been so cheerful even when I brought in 3 luggages. I felt like such a bother! The next day, I brought all 3 of those luggages to Buffalo Exchange in Fullerton and I guess and I was being overly accommodating helping them put the clothes back into my luggage, hovering and making their buying experience easier however I could. The buyer was a bit confused, and was wondering if I was sorting the clothes she passed on to donate. I said no Id take everything back, Im just helping her pack up the clothes again because I know it's a lot of stuff, and she was like "Oh I've seen more! Don't worry at all, I can put the stuff back it's literally part of my job." This was on a Saturday afternoon when they were really busy mind you! Its crazy how the previous night's experience at Crossroads made me feel self conscious about being a bother, but in fact its THEM that is the problem. They are horribly lacking customer service skills and really should try harder to suppress their irritation (its a skill you must have in that industry). I wouldn't have written this review, but my great selling experience at Buffalo Exchange was a night and day difference. I hope they get some friendlier staff on board.
