TLDR: Downtown location is smack in the middle of the city, makes for a good COVID outdoor hangout for couples or friends alike! Definitely try the mango sorbet cone and the matchamisu!
(Slightly) longer review for those not in a hurry:
Taste (5/5) : I ordered the matchamisu and the mango sorbet in a cone (photos attached).
Matchamisu:
The matchamisu is one of Butter Baker's signature cakes and is a delicious combination of matcha and a traditional tiramisu. Imagine layered Uji matcha sponge cake, filled with vanilla cream and chocolate. The chocolate crumble topping at the tip of the slice and the dabs of matcha cream ties it all together. Why I absolutely adored it was the fact that, and I might be a drama llama for saying this, an intergalactic adventure! Okay, maybe not intergalactic, but out-of-this world for sure. From the very first bite to the very last bite the flavours just kept giving more and more character to the cake. I love how the entire slice was not too sweet, and the matcha gave a nice slight bitterness to offset the creaminess of the vanilla cream that could have gotten too heavy otherwise. On my first bite, the toastiness of the chocolate came through most prominently, follower by the smoothness of the matcha cream. As I worked my way through the slice, the flavour profile morphed into being more matcha-centric, allowing me the tastebuds to experience the matcha in its full blast. For matcha lovers, this is definitely a nice slice. All too often do matcha-inspired cakes fall flat being too sweet, not matcha-y enough, or tasting like grass, but the matchamisu from Butter Baker is definitely a tastebud-turning choice.
Mango sorbet in a cone:
Loved, loved, loved this! The sorbet is definitely more like a soft serve, so you must work fast (though you wouldn't be able to stop anyway!). The mango flavour itself can be best described as the refreshing mango purée you often taste with mango lassi. Or the in-season version of Real Fruit mango slushies (if you know you know). The twist cone was a perfect treat for a hot summer day, and it definitely quenched the thirst for something sweet and light on a hot summer day. Upon first bite of the waffle cone, I was also so, so impressed by how buttery the waffle was! Definitely lives up to the name of Butter Baker. It was somewhere between crispy and crunchy, as it was thin but substantial, and the taste of butter hits you so hard. The cone itself wasn't terribly sweet, which is great, because it let the natural aroma of the butter come through. I love the detail the waffle cone gave, because all too often ice cream places have hard waffles cones, or waffle cones that are just pure sugar that does nothing to complement the ice cream itself. Butter Baker's waffle cones though, are definitely on-point (get it? Because it's a cone).
Place (4.5/5) : Went to the downtown location. A little cramped, but that might be because I'm big. A pity they don't have a small cafe! Would have been so nice to enjoy a slice of their cake while having coffee (though it's COVID anyway). It's smack downtown, about a 5 minute walk from Eaton's Centre, and 20 minutes from Chinatown, so it's definitely worth visiting if you want to just chill downtown and have a nice walk around the neighbourhood for some good ol' quality bonding time. Great to see that they properly follow COVID regulations as well.
