A year and a half ago I adopted a senior cat. I found it difficult to socialize her and she hid from everyone as she was scared of her new home. She lashed out at me and anyone who tried to approach her. I struggled with the plan of taking her back. I contacted the Humane Society to help me with my new friend. I got excellent advice on how to handle her shyness and her being frightened. I decided to keep her and work with socializing her. I recently adopted a teenage puppy. The staff was so helpful and accommodating to my needs of time with this new pup. Betti Pascua met me on every occasion and was the first friendly smiling face to greet me each time. I've called them many times for emergency help with a sick dying animal and not one time have they ever been willing to help me. Their entire existence is to help animals, yet that's not what they want to do. I called the other day because I needed a cat with a dying cat, suffering massively, to be put down immediately and they provide a low cost option for that according to their website, but when I called, and I had to call numerous times during when they are supposed to be answering the phone, they said they're not doing euthanizations anymore and had no idea where I could go I couldn't believe she was being serious. horrible horrible place! read more

I love the cat I adopted and I am grateful for the services that they provide to all the babies in need. However, their clinic staff is rude and not very forthcoming. I adopted a cat, did the right thing and scheduled his appointment for his booster and upon arrival at the clinic they informed me that I needed to start the vaccinations over again because they were passed due. When I asked how and why this was not explained to me they replied, "thats adoption". This was very misleading as when I reviewed my adoption paperwork I was well within the time frame for his booster. This was obviously a money grab for new adopters. Veterinary care is already so expensive so to add this on top was very frustrating. read more

My fiancé and me recently adopted a female dog at Butte Human Society. We've never been through any kind of an adoption process before, so this experience was very new for us. They made this process so seamless, making it easy for us to bring home our new fur baby. The process from applying, scheduling the meet and greets and the actual adoption was a great way to ensure it was a perfect fit. We have only had her for a couple days, but she's fit right in. The manager in "charge" sure doesn't make good or friendly communication. She told me my "conversation" was on recording with a previous employee and that everything is recorded. So I asked her to please provide that, she took a few minutes to reply , and asked why I needed it. I responded "well you just told me that I'm suing to 'make a ton of cash' and that my lawyer is going to win." To make those kind of accusations, I would like to prove to her , that her employee is lying to both of us. She took a couple more minutes and asked if I was "done." I said after being insulted, discriminated, mocked, and accused of lying when her employee lied. HORRIBLE gut wrenching experience. I just wanted a cat and Katrina-boss spreaders false information and I'm following up on this now because I never said that. I told her if you knew who I was money is the last thing I'm worrying about. I just wanted to go home with a cat I've had my eye on for a few days calling in for almost a week and I go in and I get out in an interrogation room. The entire experience is traumatizing and I hope the owner is reading this and reaches out to me and tried to make things right. Just ask Katrina or Emily. They are over staffed as well. People just sitting around on their phones. So for the "manager" to give me an unrequested phone call, she tells me "every phone line is recording , and good luck in court " - ok Katrina , if you say so. read more

This place will ruin your love for animals and drain you of any morsel of being that you may ever have! Don't work here! It leaves you feeling like a big fat poop in a toilet and not just any toilet, a harshly used porta potty at Coachella. Their clinic staff doesn't use gloves because "it just takes too much time". Their PPE protocol for staff and volunteers does not get enforced. Upper management makes this place unbearable to be in and will expect you to push all of your feelings down and pretend they don't exist. They euthanized a dog for no reason. Ask any staff member about Rocky, Capone, or Mikey. All animals that have lost their lives due to BHS staff members of different departments being negligent. The two managers are untrained at their jobs and have zero clue what they're doing and play everything by ear. The adoptions manager picks and choses who she wants to be friends with (receptionist and shelter med) otherwise expect for your job to be at risk because she just doesn't like you. Multiple staff members put the animals welfare and heath at risk a number of times and next to nothing was done about it. Everyone in admin only cares about the money that goes into their pockets and not the animals which is what the whole job is about. Toxic and mismanaged. read more

I looked for about a month to find a purrrrfect kitten and I finally found one here. All the employees I had to deal with here were wonderfully nice. It cost me $55 to adopt him and that came with: -A wonderful kitten! -A microchip -A month of free pet insurence -All his shots taken care of -Already neutered -A bag of kitten food They make sure the pets they give away are going to be well taken care of and safe. I took my kitten to the vet and he had a cold and ear mites, but I think that is to be expected coming from a crowded shelter. Butte Humane Society - My kitten Danja that I got at BHS! He's amazing! - Animal Shelters Near Me - Chico, California

I called the Butte County Humane Society because I thought it was time to have my pet put to sleep. I contacted two other vets that I have seen in the past but, the process was really expensive. So, I called the HS, no one answered. I left a message and received a call back within 2 hours. From the first call to the end of my appointment everything was smooth, pleasant, the Vet knew her shit and the expense was affordable for someone on a fixed income. I was called in right at my appointment time, I waited in the exam room about 5 minutes before the Vet's assistance came to get the history of my dog and discuss my concerns. Butte Humane Society requires an exam before they agree to put a pet down. The Vet was very nice, knew what was wrong with my dog. I couldn't stand to see my dog in pain anymore. Instead of putting her down, the Vet gave her some medication so my dog could have the quality of life she deserves. Now I don't have to have her put down. I am so glad I went the BHS. My dog would be gone by now if I went with my previous two Vets. The only way I could get any pain medication from the other Vets is to pay for lab work and xrays, well over $200. The prices at the HS are much less then any other Vet I have seen in Chico. Thank you so much for allowing me to spend more time with my little girl. I would defiantly recommend BHS. I was a surprised at how clean the place looked and how empty the waiting room was. They were all kind and professional and compassionate. I am defiantly going to continue my dogs care at the Butte Humane Society. You should too. read more

I don't often right reviews and especially negative ones. However, I just so happened to walk into the facility to possibly find another addition to our family. I had asked the girls standing around (3of them to be exact) if I could go into the cat room. I was told it's only permitted if an application is on file. I then asked where the dogs are located and if I could see them and again turned away! Tell me with 3 ladies standing around and doing nothing but chatting "Why wouldn't you take the time to show me some animals"? I bet you didn't realize I have been an avid donator for the past decade to your establishment! Ps. I will find an organization to donate to that is eager to help animals find forever homes. read more

2 stars because they're a great service for the community as a whole, but this is a review for the Spay & Neuter clinic. I've bought my last three dogs to get spayed or neutered because it's a common surgery and I'd rather my money go to a good cause, and figured since this is all they do, my kids would at least be in good hands. My most recent is a very lively 1 y/o GSD mix. First things first, I go to drop her off at 7 am, and the chick behind the counter would clearly rather have been somewhere, probably anywhere else. I can't exactly call her rude - mostly dismissive, impatient and reluctant. I understand you have to deal with everyone else's unruly pets all day, but I felt weird leaving my baby with someone that seemed to give zero f**ks. Pup just recently got weighed in at 45 lbs about a month or two ago, but when she stepped on the scale at this clinic it read 61... putting her in the next weight bracket adding $20 to the charge. that struck me as a little weird but didn't think too much of it untilllllll........ This is the second time (out of 2 experiences) that they've called about a surcharge because my dog was in heat. The first time, I didn't see any signs but thought hey she might be going into her first heat and I didn't know it. Thinking I'd learned my lesson, I waited for my second female to go through a heat (generally lasting 2-4 weeks). She had some signs for a couple weeks-month and then the bleeding began. I waited for her to stop heavy bleeding (lasted about 4 weeks), so when she started to only spot, I scheduled the appointment for a little over a month out. Because the duration of the heat was so far out of the average, I thought I was in the clear. But low and behold, I got charged extra. When I called to have them explain to me, the woman on the phone was relatively nice but wouldn't let me talk to the doctor. ultimately got snarky with me, telling me they can go immediately into another heat sometimes...sometimes, or rarely ever? I knew my dog was special! Also that its outlined in the paperwork that this is a potential surcharge and I signed off. I asked her if there's any way they can PROVE that she was in heat and she said: "the doctor wouldn't just lie" - I told her right, I should trust a complete stranger that has nothing to lose and all to gain? Anyone else had an experience like this? I think its just too fishy, especially because they tend to treat people like they don't know jack shit about their own pet. read more

For those who have seen a post awhile back that was negative, there was something going on then that is now solved. I have no way of finding that post now and removing it. These people are so nice, kind and supportive to me and other staff and volunteers. They treat the animals with love, care and respect. I love the new facility and the vet clinic there. It is super clean. I enjoy doing the laundry, visiting the cats and soon working with the dogs. read more

Would put one star but they are doing a good service to the dogs of our community. My girlfriend and I were looking to foster a dog and give our dog a little companion. We went to introduce them and the workers were very rude. We use a retractable leash as we have an apartment an like to give him space to move freely when we take him out. They were very judgmental about this type of leash. And when they found out my dog wasn't neutered their whole demeanor changed and were extremely rude. I find it very offending that two people trying to foster an animal would be treated like this. It was a ridiculous experience. If you don't agree 100% with their views I'd stay clear of this center. read more

I have been trying to meet two dogs that are here, to see if they are a good fit for my elderly parents. I've left messages and no one calls back. When I tried to go in person to meet the dogs, I was met at the door and told I needed to fill out an application. Before I have my parents fill out all their information, I wanted to meet the dogs first to see if they would be a good fit. My parents lost their dog recently, and this has been traumatic. I just want to meet the dogs before we decide if we want to commit. I am not sure where the disconnect is. If they make the process difficult, they won't find homes for the animals. read more

This review is long over due. But while I was living in Chico, I took my puppy here to get neutered. Front desk staff were not informative, all they did was gave me a paper to fill out and said just return this when finished. Once I returned it all she did was took the paper and said to come at a certain time to pick up my puppy. Didn't say anything else. So when I picked my puppy up, I asked about medication since he is a small dog and I'm sure he would be in pain. The idiot told me that I was suppose to request it the time I turned my paper in and I'm like no one even told me that. Good thing Petco has dog aspirin because this place was no help. read more

I was going to volunteer at the butte humane society in Chico. I had an rough day one day and after finding out that they required jeans which in the past have not worked for me, I emailed the volunteer coordinator about this and after she responded, I told her to not contact me again. Later my friend who was going to volunteer with me told me about some jeans that would work. I re-emailed the volunteer coordinator about this along with an apology and explained who I am and that I have Aspbergers. She accepted my apology. However, I tried to communicate to her that my friend didn't get an email about his shirt he ordered on 5/27/21 and his volunteer status. She then sent proof that she emailed him about the steps to volunteer and told me that if he can't check spam or junk that he would not get communication from butte humane society. She also insisted that the emails she sent were not about his shirt. I told her how he re-did his volunteer application and that he did not get an email about the test. I got an email about the handbooks and the test. I told her that to this day, that he did not have an email from her in his inbox. Today, 8/10/21, I got a refund for the shirt I re-ordered and asked why. Her response was that I was still being negative with her and other staff. I left a kind voice message to the director about this and she called back. She said I had an attitude. I was accusing them of not sending the emails and asked me if I had a case worker. I was insulted. She even said all of my emails were angry. I told her that was not true and that it was not my intention to come across negative, etc. She also insisted that the day my friend and I came to ask about why we haven't been contacted about my friend's shirt and our applications that the girl who was talking to us did not yell at me and that I was angry and irate when I spoke to her [the director] about it. I tried to explain several times I was not having an attitude, etc. She even told me that they base their volunteers on their communication through emails and said that if they let me volunteer that I would still be negative and that I would be a problem there. She also told me that Maybe I needed to come in person with a care provider or a friend to talk to them. Finally I just firmly told her that I am sorry you have to judge people like this and that she sees me as a bad person and that I would never volunteer there. She responded by saying Good. I then hung up. In my opinion, they judged the emails about my friend not getting them with my other communication to them and blew it way out of proportion. To judge a person by voice on the phone and just by email is wrong. read more

People who work in and for animal rescue organizations are angels. The angels at the Butte County Humane Society are a particularly wonderful bunch. There are several things I appreciate about this location: 1). They are a no-kill shelter. (except of course the animal is too badly injured to save or is too aggressive to be safe) 2). The adoption process is pretty painless. 3). The fees are reasonable (for cats and kittens $50 adoption fee + $50 spay/neuter deposit). 4). On Saturdays they have special $20 cat adoption days (spay/neuter fees still apply for animals that still need the procedure) and you can 'adopt a friend' for free. 5). They have three rooms full of cats to play with. 6). The staff is really great, you can tell that they really do love animals and genuinely care about finding good homes for their furry charges. I've been wanting a cat for a while now, this weekend I finally talked my boyfriend in to the idea, so on Saturday we went 'just to look'. We were, most emphatically, not going to come home with a cat. *snerk* We spent about 2 hours cuddling, petting and playing with felines of all ages. There were two particularly wonderful adult kitties that we came *thisclose* to taking home with us, but then 8 week old Peaches stole our hearts. Her new name is Tatiana (she's far to dignified to be "Peaches", besides, she's not orange), she's a purr machine and I love her. I'm so glad we went 'just to look'. You should go too. read more

Don't ever go to an animal shelter "just to look." It doesn't ever work that way. My experience went something like this: I went on their website "just to look," spotted a dog that I wanted to "meet," and then went to the shelter the next day. The day after that, I had a dog. I am now the proud owner of a handsome purebred pittbull, Johnny Skycaptain of the Universe. Not only was it a great and fairly fast but thorough process (I had to get my landlord to call and confirm that it was ok with her if I had a dog in the apartment), but there are so many advantages to adopting a rescue dog from here. -Free 30 days of pet insurance -Free flea/tick prevention -Free first vet checkup (from their list of providers) -Free dog wash -Free obedience class through the Humane Society -Doggy care booklet -Coupons for local pet supply stores Free microchipping And of course...a wonderful dog. What they don't tell you is that there are also other pet supply shops and service groups that will offer additional discounts for rescue dogs. When I started looking at more obedience and training classes, many of them noted that there would be discounts for rescue dogs by as much as $25! We also went to Petco right after we got Johnny U, and when we told the trainer there that he was a bit of a leash puller and I had just adopted him from the Humane Society, she gave us a free leash training around the store and recommended a great collar (and by the way, he walks like an absolute champ now). read more

I have been a donor and adopter at BHS for several years, and have been happy to do so, and encourage anyone to help support BHS. But I must say I am somewhat frustrated with them lately! Simply: do you want to adopt out dogs these days? I've been in there several times in the last three weeks looking to adopt. And I'm getting the feeling you're not that interested to place dogs. One thing that I'm curious about is why dogs are put on the web site listed as "available", but are not. There are dogs on there that say, "coming soon", I get that, but when you list them as "available", they should be Available! We like to adopt the "hard to adopt dogs", and we always give them a true, loving, awsum home and life! But the last few times in there, I get the feeling that nobody really cares, just posturing. And I see even more dogs entering every day. Are the available or not is the question? I like to help out locally, but I also want to adopt, now! I got my dog (lab/terrier) from the humane society when (about 3 month ago) he was 8 weeks old. The difficulty of letting people adopt is very understandable, and it is mainly to make sure the dogs/cats are going to a good home, wont be strayed or returned to the shelter. With adoption they give free pet insurance for 30 days, the pets come neutered and vaccinated which is great. I believe they should make it easier for people to walk dogs without an appointment would be awesome, and would help the dogs get more domesticated. Things i didn't like was the fact that the shelter is not as clean as it should be. The shelter is also over crowded but thats just due to the high volume of animals coming in. I was very nervous to come here because of some of the reviews. I took both my GSD in for check ups and heart worm medication for the summer. The staff was nice even though my dogs are very loud. The staff realized immediately my dogs just liked to talk and they did not hesitate to come meet them and help calm the barking. They were patient and asked lots of good questions and the woman who did the exams was very knowledgeable about their breed. read more

Horrible place, Not clean, and bad customer service. I made an appointment with Butte human society to spay my cats. I had to make a deposit. I paid half of the fees to spay both of my cats. When I scheduled the appointment I asked for the address. They gave me the address. I went to the location , they moved and didn't update me with their new address. I was 30 min late. They tood me we won't spay them. They told me, I needed to pay additional 90.00 to get them spayed at another date , however I only would owe 30.00 after the procedure. I already made a deposit , I paid half of the fees . Why would I need to pay 90.00? That's the entire bill. She tried scamming . I told her no and asked for my deposit back. She refused . I told her it's their fault they gave me the wrong address. They said we refuse service , and you will not get your deposit back. I told her I would sue them. I've heard from other people , that this is not the first time. They will refuse service and keep your deposit. read more

When I first met Holly, previously named Little Foot, I wasn't looking for a Chihuahua. To be frank, I was never interested in Chihuahuas because I thought they were "yippy". That stereotype couldn't be more wrong. I'm disabled and can only lift 10lbs, so I came into BHS looking for a small dog. Going into the dog adoption area, it was loud with dogs eager to go home. But when I passed by Holly, she was calm and quiet, and instantly came up to the kennel door to say hi. Since bringing her home, she has been my little Godsend. She "senses" the mood I'm in. If I'm having a difficult day, she'll remain calm and cuddle with me for as long as I need. When I'm sad, she and I will throw around her toys which makes laugh and she'll pick my spirit up. She has been the perfect companion animal. Her nick name is my little Diva, she doesn't get up before 9am .When my son comes home from school, she has the energy of a pup, even though she is five yrs. old. She plays with him to get her energy out. The BHS staff was so kind and helpful in finding my "guardian angel." I WOULD LIKE TO SAY A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL THE BHS STAFF!!! read more

I recently needed help regarding my 2 dogs, Randy with the shelter was more than happy to assist me going above and beyond his duty within the shelter. I've never rescued a pet from this society but I have brought my recent rescue to the Clinic and have had MULTIPLE problems with them (3 separate visits). The first time I brought him in I explained to the staff that my dog had worms and I even described in detail what the worms looked like. They added deworming to my bill and after his third round of deworming, he still had tons of worms! I described the worms AGAIN and was finally told that the deworming medication they had him on didn't treat that particular strain of worm. So not only did they waste my time and money for bringing in my dog 3 times, I then had to go get this $30 deworming medication from Tractor Supply. On another visit, I asked how much it would cost for my dog to get the canine flu shot. I was told $38. After it was administered, I was told my dog would have to come back for the second round. When I came back for the second round, it was another $38. They were not clear with this upfront so I was very frustrated when I brought him back for the last shot (they didn't charge me every time for every round of deworming). The last straw this this place happened this week when my dog needed his next 6 month pack of heartworm. I called in advance and explained the situation to the woman who answered the phone, she explained we could just drop in any time until 5:30pm except between 12:00 and 1:30 because they close for lunch. I relayed this information to my husband who took off early from work to go pick up the medication. He arrived at 5:10 and after standing in line for a few minutes while another woman was filling out paperwork, a staff member finally started to assist him. When that staff member went to the computer another staff member told her to stop and that she couldn't do it because it was after 5. My husband explained that we were told until 5:30 but the woman was SO RUDE. My husband and I LITERALLY just donated to the humane society last week and I'm pissed they now have our money. I'm never donating to them again and I'd rather take my dog to our regular vet and pay more for BETTER service. read more

I am currently a volunteer at Butte Humane Society and I enjoy going there to visit with the dogs since mine are 7+ hours away. However, the other day I doing kennel socialization and saw a dog with a cone around his neck (not the issue here- I am pre-vet major and fully understand the reason for putting a cone on an animal). The cone on this particular dog was broken and missing a huge chunk of plastic from it, which allowed it to flop around this dog's neck (obviously not fulfilling it's purpose). The cone could have got caught on something or cut him if he moved the wrong way. Sorry I thought it was HUMANE society. When I went out to the front desk to let an employee know he responded very rudely and as if I had no knowledge whatsoever about animals and their well-being. Simply saying, "Ya we know." And blowing me off. I am volunteering my time to sit with these poor animals and i have more concern for their well-being than you- an employee- do. Something is wrong with that picture. I will continue to volunteer at the humane society, however I have lost some respect for that certain employee. read more
