I am extremely disappointed in Don's Auto Service. When I arrived I was told by two employees that…read morethe estimate on my car would be free of charge. That turned out to be a big fat lie. Apparently only a "walk around" estimate is free of charge. If they open the hood and actually look at the engine, there is a $150 charge. Seriously? Aside from that, they ripped the glove compartment out and left it on the passenger-side floor. We obviously will not be back.

I can't say enough great things about this shop. We have them a call minutes before closing time…read morewhen we broke down a mile from their garage, just to see what our options would be for a tow or their availability for the next day etc. They came and got us within minutes, and stayed late working on getting us back on the road. When we realized we'd need to wait until morning for the right part, they gave us a ride to our Airbnb (we were traveling), fixed the car in the morning while they were closed, and then came and got us. Truly the kind of experience that restores your faith in humanity. Great people, great work, very fair and transparent prices, 20/10. If we had to break down far from home, I'm so grateful it was right next to this garage.

We pulled over at the nearest rest stop which, thankfully, happened to be Leroux Brothers. The mechanic gave it a quick look and told my friend she needed a new transmission. He was even kind enough to talk to my friend's father to explain the problem. When asked what happens if we drive on it anyway, he told us it was probably ok to get back to Boston. Not wanting to give up our travel plans, the women in the front office helped us find a rental company nearby and let us charge our phones. Although we weren't customers here, their customer service was beyond compare.

The problem was a bit of a mystery, after Ray had tried all the basic stuff (fuel pump, relays, etc) and took a lot of work to resolve. Ray showed up very quickly, brought parts, tried some stuff, bought a few more parts, tried a few more things and... after some more parts-buying and stuff-trying (keeping us in the loop the entire time about why he was doing this or that thing and giving us the option to not keep going) he was able to fix the problem, explain what he fixed in simple terms, and give us "things to look out for" as my partner drove home. He made it home with no issues! Ray's prices were super reasonable considering he was doing the work on a Sunday afternoon in the road in front of my house. He was tenacious about getting to the bottom of things and his knowledge of cars is encyclopedic.
