If they're letting mice roam around freely, imagine what's happening behind the scenes. If the front of the store is this bad, what does the stockroom look like? What about the area where they prepare fresh food? If they even have a health inspector, that person must be getting paid off or blind as hell. Have shopped here since 1982 today was the second disrespectful experience I have had within a years time. Waited my turn behind 2 other shoppers , noticed the cashier Marge trying to get the attention of manager on duty, Jeff, he was engaged in conversation with two other employees, one coming on one going home. it was 4:10 and the cashier packed her register up and left me there with my groceries on the conveyer belt. In her defense he was ignoring her flailing hail to him. It appeared she has been in this situation before and was "like Oh well, I gotta go". Butera is a privately owned chain of grocery stores in suburban Chicago. It appears that it positions its marketing towards the Mexican and Polish clientele while being well rounded enough for anyone else. In any event, their pricing on meat and produce is amongst the best in this entire market. Furthermore, their quality in 9 out of 10 in most cases. This market is an international market with mostly eastern and Western European food. It seems it's best for when it has good sales so you can shop here for things you like and get stuff that's on a good sale. The produce is fresh and clean and the meat and cheese section are decent. The Seafood section is small. It has so much international variety and items imported so it's fun to go through to see the snacks and products. I am surprised by the negative reviews on this page. I started coming here about 6 months ago because I needed some products that Jewel did not carry (diet cherry juice is one example). Once I figured out the layout of the place, I am in and out in 10 mins. The check out lanes are much faster than Jewel and they don't charge a bag fee like the Chicago grocery stores. I usually shop here on Saturdays, a busy day, and the staff has helped me find items I'm looking for but can't locate. The place is clean, and I've seen employees doing wipe downs, that's very important in these times of covid. I recommend that you should try shopping here at least once, you might find it a good alternative to Jewel. read more

I was there today, New Year's Eve and I purchased some chicken wings that were on sale. I purchased three packs and two of those packs were spoiled! The chicken was frozen and despite it being frozen you can't freeze the smell of spoiled! It comes through without a doubt. I guess that's the reason for sale.... I'm not happy about the store brand stuff costing more than "name brand" stuff...not really trying to pay 3 bucks for Food club peanut butter! Can I give ZERO stars? I recently encountered an extremely unprofessional female supervisor who desperately needs re-education in customer service. I witnessed this woman positioned behind the supervisor area (next to the liquor dept) ridicule 2 elderly Asian women for wearing masks. She stated "the pandemic is over, you dont need to wear those anymore"). She also chastised an elderly gentleman (probably in his 80s) who approached the desk with a receipt and stated all of his bags were not placed in his cart. She told him "the person behind you probably took them, you need to pay better attention". Everyone in line at the desk heard these extremely rude, loud comments and were commenting to each other...we could not believe the disrespect this woman was exhibiting towards these seniors. If you're not a big fan of taking risks on brands you don't know or stores that aren't on every street corner, probably just skip Butera. It's a very large store and it's full of more foreign foods that you can't get at Jewel even though Jewel is trying to expand their section of foreign foods... However, cheap meats, cheap deli foods and all very high quality. Especially if you're looking for meat to make sausage with (etc.) this is THE place to buy it. Don't bother going to an independent butcher or deli if you're not an elitist about what you use or your grandmother left in her will she'll haunt you if you don't shop at so-and-so's deli, go to Butera. There's not a lot of them left anymore but the ones that still exist are a great deal. It's almost a little bit of a neighborhood jewel (ha. ha...) because if you're an outsider you won't think to stop in. This used to be my favorite weekly local grocery store when I lived on the NW edge of Chicago. Then just today, a few days before Thanksgiving, I needed a few small items. I thought I'd stop here since I was in the area and rekindle old shopping memories. Coming inside after nearly a 3 year absence, I was stunned by the clean floors, and well-marked, organized aisles that weren't there before. Since the neighborhood still has old-world Italians, Greeks, a new influx of Polish residents, and Mexicans just to the west in Schiller Park, you'll find plenty of ethnic items for all. I've fallen in love with Shop-N-Save in Niles since then, but this was where I used to buy my romano cheese, the best spinach or meat arancini, semolina flour by the scoop-ful, fresh seafood, and other imported products. Needless to say, they always were better priced than Jewel or Dominick's. One look at the deli and it was just as before. Customers crowded around the length of the deli counter, numbers in hand. Whenever you shop here, regardless of time or day, that deli is crowded. Go take a number, shop the store and you'll come back just in time to place your order. Otherwise, you'll be wandering between the frozen seafood bins and the produce section for the next 10-15 minutes. They also have a nice bakery in the back and now there's even a Charter One Bank inside. Checkouts seem a little slow since they don't usually employ baggers, but there always seem to be at least 5 checkouts or more open. I should add that Butera also has a store nearby in Harwood Heights on Nagle & Gunnison, but that one gets too crowded and the aisles are too narrow for 2 carts to pass each other easily. read more

When it gets the best of you then you're stuck with the dilemma of tossing out wasted food or writing a complaint. Italian food that isn't just Stella D'oro cookies and Ragu? Yes, this location of Butera really has it all. However, you gotta fight the staff tooth and nail to get it. Nice deli counter, incompetent deli workers. How do I end up with $7 worth of sliced gorgonzola? Big bins of Italian lupini nuts, fava beans, polenta cornmeal, and taralli flour. Amazing, right? What they don't tell you is the airheads in the deli have to weigh it and place a price on these things (yet at the register all other produce is priced there...) The staff on the registers is a trip. Cashier: (Looks up from texting) "You hav to hav deli put steeckerrrr on eeet." Me: "I didn't know that. I'm in line to check out now...." Cashier: "He can go do eet...." (points to slouching bagger talking to another bagger in Polish; said bagger barley glances towards us). Whenever I'm at Butera, I always find myself wishing I lived much closer. It would be my go-to grocery store. Butera has a great selection of European products. Far more interesting stuff in general than Jewel or Dominick's. Decent prices, too. Nice bakery selections. The deli looks huge, but I've never picked up anything from there. The produce is so-so. Some things are ok, others look past their prime. Just shop carefully. As another reviewer has mentioned, beware of expired products. Check the dates on everything you pick up. (Which is a good habit to get into anyway.) I saw a package of ham that had expired a month previous, and it was proudly displayed at the front of the row. I think part of the problem is that the median age of the employee there seems to be maybe 17. I don't think I've ever seen an adult employee there. Also, beware if you go there close to closing time. They only time I'm ever there is Saturday evening. They close at 9:00. The kids aren't too discreet about the fact that they want you to get the hell out. The cashiers are always ultra bitchy close to closing as well. Twice they have literally thrown all of our items in bags. It's pretty offensive, but I kind of overlook it because I really like the store otherwise. read more

Recently updated, Butera has a wide range of food needs. The produce has improved and the produce section is livlier, clean and plentiful. The locals who shop here should be made to follow a dress code, and if the people of the village have a sort of Dan Clowes/Mitch O'Connell bleakness to themselves, you oughta see the shoppers in nearby Aldi's: bleak doesn't cover it. bUt I digress; Butera is a nicer place in 2010 and well-run, well-stocked and PENNY-WISE. House brands are a dollar saver, so I do buy their cereal and stuff like cream cheese. Meats have always had a nefarious reputation at Butera and that ain't me talkin' here, but we buy fresh for the day's use (or for the weekend's cooking) and always have good deals and good cuts. I've even bought the "reduced for fast sale" steaks and such and still here to write about it. So with all this covid stuff going on....I as a senior with diabetes and high blood pressure am in the high risk catagory for covid. I notices all the stores around here ( Jewel, Tony's, Mariano's and Aldi's) have special senior days and hours with our safety in mind. I have been buying groceries from Butera for almost four years now. During the last two months, many containers for spices and other dry goods either had safety seals unsealed (for two on-sale larger containers of dry ground mustard and chile powder) or today the container of dates that I bought had a slit in the top of the container that I did not put there. I have forgiven in the past because I thought the incidents to be outliers. Today's incident was too much. The container still has the safety seal around the rim, but somehow that container was slit around the inside rim even with the safety seal on it. I used to like Butera, but I take my family's food safety seriously. I have never needed to worry before about unsealed or slit items and this is making me re-consider where I shop for groceries. I admit that I did not look for slits in the tops of the containers before I got home, but found it upon arriving home when I wanted to have some dates. I should not have to look for unwarranted slits or open containers. I want to be able to trust my grocery store and not waste my money. I sent this same letter to corporate and hope that it may make a difference. I am a regular costumer, but if I have to look elsewhere, I can do that. read more

What happened to this place?! This location used to be okay five-six years ago but not anymore. Customer service was never great at this location and their produce was decent but I was willing to overlook it since their prices were less expensive than Jewel-Osco down the block. Not anymore. Produce is subpar and wilty, they always have multiple carts of "reduced" groceries by the front registers (items near and even past their expiration dates that don't sell which apparently happens often) and customer service is really really bad. Customer service is non existent. I reluctantly went to the deli today and the employees were incompetent and rude. They were talking about the customers amongst themselves and a few had loud congested coughs. The deli assistant that took care of me coughed in front of my exposed deli meat and then denied it. I asked where an item was, the employee gave me a look like, 'I've got more important things to do than give directions!' Not a good place to shop and terrible customer service every time in the deli. The store is managed and set up with decades old approaches. Any person with a 2-digit IQ would manage better. The deli has the laziest women working there that cry when they have to work the fish counter. As soon as you say I need something in the fish counter they scream " I will not clean a fish or come back tomorrow when Jose can clean and help you." They slice meat and talk about their social lives and avoid any eye contact and pretend to be deaf when you are asking for service. How hard is it to bag and price a dozen oysters? I can't even get a fillet of fish because they are so afraid of touching it and their body language is so rude and cold. You have to say thank you three times and they still stare at you with deadly eyes to wrap a piece of fish. And then they close the deli at 7:50PM and tell you the store is closed at 8PM. No wonder other stores are packed and this place has one or two resisters open all the time. It will be gone in a few years, not sustainable to run a business this way. read more

I have been a customer at this location for a few years, I ad a stroke in November of 2016 and cannot walk and as a result I need an electronic cart to buy groceries. During a shopping trip which my daughter took me to this Butera I ACCIDENTLY knocked over an end cap of some Italian vinegar. The woman employee said it was okay and, of course, I apologized and continued my shopping, On the way out the assistant manager stopped me to say he was told to tell me I was not allowed back into this store using an electric cart. I told him my stroke prevented me from walking so I could not return to that store, He lost a good customer. I reported him and the store and to the ADA regarding my handicap. This store has a very small bakery department and needs remodeling beside unpleasant smells in their refrigerated departments. I will never return to this store, read more

Great prices on staples, but I will not buy produce here. I have found that the produce is at the end of the line and tends to go bad in two days. They do have a nice selection of ethnic foods and they are worth the trip,I would steer clear of the fresh produce. read more

If your a Handicap individual you may not want to shop here !! Handicap spots are not user friendly as they are positioned far from the main entrance, rather than up front and center where they should be !! When I questioned the store manager, he made ridiculous excuses as to why this is the case. There are also not enough Handicap spots at this location !! There are NO Public Washrooms !! No Handicap Washroom facilities !! The only single Washroom is located in the rear of the store and up a long flight of stairs !! Really ?? They do not have Public Washrooms !! Despicable !! read more
