Been coming in here once every few years for 20 years and I'm sorry to report it's not as good as it used to be. Actually I think other bbq places may have gotten better but this place has not. Chopped pork was ok but not distinctive. Red Cole slaw was excellent. Sweet potato casserole is a sugar bomb, hiding sweet potato flavor. Jalapeño corn bread was just not good, too cakey, no jalapeños. Fair prices. $7.99 value meal is a good deal. I'm also sad that it was virtually empty on the weekday we visited at noon. Food was good. I did take out. That was problematic. I ordered combo, requested my sauce When I finally got to the window for pickup, the bag was given with a smile and knot in the top. I drove around and parked to eat. Upon releasing the knot, sauce was wrong, it was bbq, not Honey mustard, color should have been easy to get right, no utensils, and no napkins. I went back through line and called from behind the car at the window. There is a small door for staff to egress if needed. I called, stated problems and said my location. Man on phone said no problem right on it. No one came out. So Seven minutes later I came to window. They knew nothing of what I was talking about , because I had to explain again. Blank face. Then another associate handed the man a small bag. He just handed it me no looking inside of it. So when I got it, it had sauce utensils and only one napkin. Again this is bbq. I said only one napkin, again blank stare no movement. That's when I actually got mad. Shot a,bird, not proud of, and pulled off. I was so looking forward to having a good BBQ as in the past. But was truly disappointed. I asked for a combo, was going to get huspuppies as a side she said it comes with it. Asked for coleslaw assumed it be onit no where in the combo as an extra side. The huspuppies looked like a bite was taken out of it. The roll for the sandwich was like at the end of the pkg. Stopped in by chance to grab a quick bite and send some emails and was pleasantly surprised at how great the food was. I had the smoked leg quarter plate with baked beans and coleslaw and it really was delicious. The service was beyond amazing as I sat in this place for a couple hours working with my IT to fix a computer issues and one of the head honchos actually refilled my drink and asked me a couple times if I needed anything. Southern hospitality is alive and well in Western North Carolina! Nothing special about the look of the place, typical barbecue restaurant but I highly recommend you stop in. read more

I was driving through (or technically around) Morganton on my way from snowboarding at Banner Elk back to Savannah and stopped here for lunch. I am very glad I did. A simple, fast-food type of atmosphere to be sure, but very kind and friendly staff and prompt service. Moreover, my BBQ pork was really good, the sauces were as well (though I wish they had a few more varieties: Pearl Country Store & BBQ in Florida has far more sauces and all are great, and it's not alone in BBQ joints doing such). The sides I had were red slaw (good enough) and potato salad (very good) plus they serve their plates with hush puppies which is a great touch even though I am not accustomed to having hush puppies with anything other than seafood dishes anywhere in the South. They were really good hush puppies, too. I'd highly recommend this place for a quick lunch near the Interstate. They seem very adept at getting high-quality food out quickly and with very caring service. Plus, it truly appears to be a place where locals come day in and day out and strike up conversations with old friends. So, we're new to Morganton and we've ben trying our best to explore the local restaurants. This was one of the first ones we tried. We both assumed it would be fast-food quality because it has a drive thru. Everyone was so friendly when we went in and it made ordering easy. I cannot tell you how surprised we were by the high quality of the food, the portions are a bit oversized, the BBQ is awesome and the sauce is great. The sweet potato casserole is to die for! Everything we had was wonderful. I will also say that I had the chicken and it was so much better than my favorite smoked chicken at Mac's BBQ in Charlotte! 1st question: why no ribs? All I was really craving was some pork ribs. Not here. I ordered the 1/2 Chicken plate w/ beans and Mac' 'n cheese and cornbread sides.. Beans were delicious. Mac 'n cheese was delicious. The chicken was so-so. The breast was very dry, but could be saved by a good dousing of BBQ sauce while the thigh was pretty moist, but also need a dousing in the sauce. When faced with the choice of going to Taco Bell or McDonald's while I'm working out of town, I like to support and try local restaurants instead. Butch's fit that bill and people at the office recommended it as well. In fact they told me exactly what to get.... Getting into the parking lot is a little tricky - you have to turn in like you're going to Lowe's and wind your way around. There certainly are a lot of choices - starting with a $5 value menu (to compete with the Big Boys I suspect) going up to sandwiches, combos and platters. For under $7 I had a smoked chicken sandwich, side of onion rings and slaw. Sodas are about $2. The chicken portion was very generous and full of wonderful smoky flavor. I slathered on some of their house made hot BBQ sauce, although it wasn't very spicy. The onion rings were hand cut, hand dipped and fried - they were surprisingly fantastic and reminded me of a very good tempura batter. The white coleslaw was even a tasty little bite. The only thing stopping me from giving this place one star is the fact that my husband liked the bbq sauce. My husband ordered the chicken sandwich and there was barely any chicken on it. He ordered potato wedges with the sandwich but he received green beans. I ordered the pork sandwich and it just looks so unappetizing. It pretty much tastes how it looks. My husband also ordered the wings which were tasteless, and not good. I really wanted the sweet potato casserole but they didn't have any today. Stopped by yesterday to eat hadn't eat there in about a year and let me tell u what.... It will be the last time the food was cold bbq slaw tasted rotten and all 3 of my party got sick my sweet potato casserole had French frys in bedded in it and bbq and mind u I didn't order either of those I got smoked chicken red slaw and sweet potato casserole so for me to find such a mixture in my food they are not doing a good job in the kitchen and not contaminating everything when they make plates workers was using same gloves that they came run the drive thru screen with and not changing them and the floor in the kitchen... that u can plainly see..... For a long time I avoided this place as it had went downhill since Butch left. I can create a list of issues with this place but, I'll be nice this time. My wife and I couldn't decide to go to KFC or what, and she brought up, if Butch's was still good we would go there. So I decided to give them one more chance and glad we did. The food is almost like it was several yrs back and the locals know what I mean. The tenders are much bigger now but, you only get 2, one side, and choice of bun,hush puppies, or jalapeño cornbread. The meal is $8.19 but with all the prices going up on everything, I completely understand. I don't mind paying a little more if it's worth it. I should have tried Butch's years ago. Great bbq, chicken tenders, and sweet potato casserole. Honda took our order and did a great job of explaining the menu and was very patient and friendly. Honda went out of her way to make sure we were satisfied with everything and came over and spoke to my 82 year old mom and made sure she was okay. Wonderful restaurant. Hard to judge off of one sandwich, but it was a good pulled pork sandwich. Not dry, had some flavor. The vinegar sauce was a little thicker than other vinegar sauces I've had, I think it was my favorite part. Ordered it w/ a side of cole slaw and hush puppies... hush puppies were good! Like many reviewers in Yelp if I could give a half star I would. But I actually bumped them up to a 4 from what should be a 3.5. Here is why. The food is good, especially the breakfast. The staff is friendly and the Resturant is clean. Problem is how long it takes. When I want to eat breakfast I literally leave my house 10 minutes early so I will not be late and that is how long it usual takes for an order of bacon and egg biscuit, 10 minutes. Ok I have tried in a two year period going back at different times, because you know staffing different days, to see if anything is different. Everytime though either the food is crap or staff are shitty to customers. This is last time I will visit. Just asked a question and staff got attitude and started shaking head. The place seemed clean and the staff was friendly. I had the pork sandwich with coleslaw and potato salad. My wife had the chicken with beans and fries. The pork sandwich was ok nothing to write home about. I did not care for the coleslaw or the potato salad. The chicken my wife got was very good, great flavor to it without sauce. The beans she got were also very good. The fries were typical fries. The hush puppies were hard as a rock. All said and done the place was ok. If we go back I think we will both be ordering the chicken with beans. I have attached a picture of my pork sandwich didn't think about taking a picture of my wife's check, wish I would have.
