They want to make sure your visit is anxiety and worry free. That is nice but, even better, Dr moreau is very very skilled and knowledgeable. For instance: at my previous dentist, it took a minimum of three weeks to get a crown back from the lab, sometimes three and a half. Well, when you have a temporary crown, it often doesnt fit or look very good and that three or three and a half week wait is a loooong time. Sometimes while waiting I would even call my dentist and ask "Did the new crowns arrive yet?" In the hopes they would come in the mail and I could move my appointment up by a day or three. I always thought three and a half weeks was just industry standard of how long it took for crowns to get done at the dental lab everywhere. Anyway, when I went to moresmiles, I had to get an inlay. I was expecting them to schedule the appointment for delivery three and a half weeks out. I was blown away when they scheduled my follow up appointment to get the inlay delivered in exactly two weeks. I'm not sure if they use different technology or just have a better dental lab (maybe both). But the difference between two weeks and three and a half weeks with an uncomfortable temporary crown is huge. Since I'm talking about temporary crowns: the dental hygienist did the temporary crowns at my old dentist and they didn't fit well or look good. I thought that was also "normal". However, at moresmiles, Dr. Moreau did the temporary crown himself and it fit perfectly. Another example: they did an MRI on my skull using advanced medical imaging technology (pic). Unfortunately, it was the complete opposite. From the start, something felt off. I met with Michael, explained my dental history, my goals, and my budget. He assured me everything was doable and that my budget was reasonable. After my so-called "free consultation," I was sent away with a bill and told I couldn't even get a quote until I paid $430 for a cleaning. I live an hour away in Baton Rouge, so before booking, I called again to make sure I wasn't wasting my time or money. Michael reassured me multiple times that it would be worth it -- so I trusted him. That was a mistake. At my second visit, Michelle did my cleaning and x-rays, and she was actually amazing -- gentle, kind, and professional. She's the only positive thing I can say about this entire experience. When the doctor came in, I felt completely dismissed. She didn't seem to listen to my goals or understand why I was there for cosmetic dentistry. The plan she presented had nothing to do with what I asked for -- orthodontics, crowns, fillings -- everything but what I needed. I balked, having had these by my former dentist in another city. I was a little nervous, but Marissa reassured me it was their policy. We got through that, and my cleaning went well. This was the only time in my adult life I'd gone over six months without a cleaning, but good hygiene and regular checkups kept my gums and teeth in good shape. Dr. Thiabille came in and performed a complete exam, checking also for and mouth or throat cancers, and found none. Having had quite a few birthdays, I would like to stay healthy from head to toe. All of the staff were friendly. My dental insurance covered all but the fluoride treatment ($36). Last Wednesday, I went to Aspen Dental in Covington Louisiana off Hwy 21 for a simple cleaning and to have a painful tooth checked. After waiting over an hour and a half, I was taken back for about 10 minutes of X-rays and then left waiting again. When the dentist finally came in, he barely looked at my X-rays before telling me I needed a root canal on my front tooth, which wasn't even the tooth I came in complaining about. When I clarified that the tooth behind it was hurting, he seemed flustered and said, "Oh, I don't know then. We'll need an expert opinion." Excuse me, isn't the dentist supposed to be the expert? Especially after taking all those X-rays? I realized he had only mentioned the wrong tooth because I accidentally called it a canine when I meant premolar. It felt like he was going off what I said rather than actually paying attention to the X-rays. The only thing he repeatedly seemed concerned about was making sure I took the survey afterward and reminding me that he worked for Aspen Dental. I was also told they would work with my insurance and offer a good payment arrangement. That did not happen. When I finally spoke with the financial representative, I was quoted $2,000 for a "special" cleaning when I had asked for the cleaning my insurance covered. Then, because they believed I might need two root canals, I was told the total could be around $8,000 more, meaning approximately $10,000 just to get started. They also prescribed me amoxicillin for what they believed was an infection. It made me violently sick for an entire week. I couldn't sleep because I was terrified I was going to lose two teeth or need expensive root canals. When I questioned the financial representative afterward, she became extremely defensive. Thankfully, I got a second opinion from Dr. Hobgood at Algiers Dental Associates, as recommended by my brother. I should have gone there from the beginning. After examining me, Dr. Hobgood found that none of what Aspen Dental told me was happening. I had a minor abrasion on my tooth caused by grinding. No cavity, no infection, and absolutely no need for a root canal. Instead, he did a simple and beautiful resin patch for $57. My tooth looks great, I'm no longer in pain, and he was absolutely worth the hour-and-a-half drive. To make matters worse, while taking the unnecessary antibiotic, I became so sick that I passed out at a movie theater concession stand this past Saturday and twice more while trying to make it to the theater. My eyes rolled back, my legs gave out, and I became violently ill afterward. Whether it was an allergic reaction or another reaction to the medication, I believe I should never have been prescribed it in the first place because I did not have an infection. I went from being told I potentially needed $10,000 worth of dental work and medication to treat an infection I didn't have, to discovering I needed a $57 repair. Thank God for Dr. Hobgood and the entire staff at Algiers Dental Associates for giving me an honest second opinion and treating me with respect. I will not be going anywhere else for dental work. Shame on Aspen Dental for the experience I had. Please, please get a second opinion before agreeing to expensive dental work. Based on my experience, I would strongly encourage anyone considering treatment there to ask questions, review their options carefully, and get another professional opinion before moving forward.
