I ordered the veggie tacos with roasted sweet potatoes (skin on, which was absolutely the right call), pepitas, feta, and all the right toppings. Whoever prepped those sweet potatoes deserves a raise because they were cut into the perfect sized pieces. Every bite had a little sweetness, a little crunch, a little saltiness... it just worked. My dining partner ordered the barbacoa tacos, and I didn't even have to ask if they were good. The involuntary "Mmm..." after the first bite answered that question. Four tacos disappeared in record time, followed by, "I could've eaten two more." That's about as glowing of a review as you're going to get. Now let's talk about these tortillas. Handmade. Corn. Tortillas. Are you kidding me? They're the kind of tortillas that had me question every tortilla I've ever eaten. Soft, fresh, and somehow they manage to steal the spotlight even with everything else on the plate being so good. The chips and guacamole were excellent, too. The chips have to be made in-house and they disappeared at an alarming rate. The salsa that came with them had this smoky, fire-roasted, chipotle flavor that kept me reaching for another chip... and then another... and then suddenly I realized I'd eaten way more chips than I intended. The bottled table salsas deserve their own paragraph because they completely confused me... in the best way. They bring three to the table... a green, a red, and a darker red. I kept tasting them individually thinking, "Okay, these are alright." Then I started mixing them. Game over. On their own, each one was solid. Mixed together? That was the magic. I don't know if that's what they intended or if I accidentally stumbled onto the perfect combination, but from that point on, every taco got the salsa trio treatment. The only tiny hiccup was when we first walked in. We were greeted, asked if we wanted menus, and sat ourselves. We waited for a bit thinking someone would come take our order, only to realize it's actually counter service. Once we figured that out, everything was smooth sailing. Not a big deal at all... just something first-time visitors might want to know. Follow the sign "order here" I also loved the layout. You can actually watch them making the food, which somehow makes the wait even harder because everything smells incredible. Two tacos ended up being the perfect light meal for me. Could I have eaten ten? Absolutely. Those two statements can both be true. Meanwhile, my dining partner polished off four barbacoa tacos and was talking about ordering two more. We only ended up here because another place happened to be closed, and honestly, I'm glad it worked out that way. This ended up being one of those meals we keep talked about on the drive home. Oh and the bathrooms?. I walked in and immediately thought, "Whoa... this is a cool bathroom" The lighting had this pinkish-purple glow that made me feel like I'd accidentally wandered into a trendy lounge instead of a taco shop. I honestly wasn't even sure there was regular lighting in there and I didn't look... because the vibe seemed so intentional. Finally, the music. .. upbeat, dance-worthy, the kind that had me bouncing in my seat while waiting for my food. Between the atmosphere, the lighting, and the music, the whole place had me want to hang out a little longer. Zero regrets. I'll absolutely be back... and next time I'm ordering more tacos.

9/27/18 Burrito Express 933 E University Dr 108 Tempe, AZ 85281 (480) 664-3644 Burrito Express is one of the best "hole in the wall" Mexican Restaurants in the East Valley. Whether it's their larger location on Ray and Gilbert, their newer location on University and Rural, or their literal hole in the wall location on Baseline and Higley, the quality is the same all around. I will be talking about their University and Rural location, but understand the quality is pretty much the same at any of their locations. Walking into this Burrito Express you see a patterned wood wall that hides the kitchen on the left and the seating area on the right. The restaurant has heavy Mexican themes; from the portraits of old wanted Mexican criminals to old photos of men in sombreros. There is a giant Arizona State University pitchfork with the words "Diablos por siempre" written under it, but what I like most of all are the painted walls in the back. The walls portray a small Mexican village with vibrant colors. There are two TV's strung up in each corner of the seating area usually showing a soccer game. The Atmosphere is vibrant and fun to eat in. Next is the service. The service at Burrito Express is always fantastic and they always greet me when I enter, usually they say. "What's going on bro, what can I get for you?" The service is great and the wait for the food usually isn't too long. Next is the pricing. During my most recent trip I bought a steak, potato, and cheese burrito and the total was $6.04 after tax. This is an increase from a couple of years ago when I used to be able to walk into other locations and a steak potato and cheese would cost me $4.96. Unfortunately, we are unable to tell if this is due to the minimum wage laws passing or other decisions, but $6.04 for a quality sized burrito is still a great deal. All the other burrito options are all decently priced as well, especially the breakfast burritos, which I believe are their hottest selling items. When you purchase any item, you get an option of red or green salsa. The red is relatively hot, but it is very tasty while the green salsa is mild in terms of spiciness. Burrito express is the place to get a cheap quality burrito, but only until 3pm. That is my only dislike about this shop is that it closes so early in the day. There have been many times where I did not know the times of the restaurant and they were closed, or when I knew they were closing at 3 and I tried to come in at 2:58 and they would not let me. This being said, this is my only problem with Burrito Express so if timing isn't a problem this is the place to get a quick, cheap, quality burrito. I love their food and will continue eating here. read more

I don't care what anyone says these breakfast burritos are the best in the country. The supreme breakfast burrito if you add onions and jalapeños is the breakfast of champions. I'd eat it every day if I could. The pricing is increasingly fair for how much delicious food you get. There's no complaints from me, always extremely fast friendly workers too read more

Old, dirty and empty containers that hold utensils looked like they have never been scrubbed with hot soapy water, the floor between the counter and topping bar had a pile of grim and dirt. The windows were dirty and the worst part... the wall AC unit was draining water down the wall and onto the seat at my table hitting me with overspray. When I used the restroom I noticed it could use a good cleaning too. The door had dirty hand marks, the wall tiles were dirty, etc. just overall the place looks like someone has lost their drive to keep up on it. The food... the three bites I took of the carne asada taco had to be spit out, so much fat and gristle it was unpleasant. So I tried the fried fish taco he recommended...it had a very generous portion of fish on two corn tortillas. The fish batter seemed old and dirty. The batter was mushy and a very dark brown color. I took a bite and nothing resembled fish. I broke open the other piece of it and it was a mushy ball of batter, no fish. I dug around and broke open another chunk to find a piece of white flakey fish. I took a bite and it just did not taste good at all. I tossed everything in the trash and left. My advice to the owners...have someone come in with fresh motivated eyes and help you update the untidy things, change your oil more often, and wipe the cutting board off that's used throughout the day to chop the carne that's visible while anyone is standing at the counter. It's gross to see pieces of meat left on the board and who knows how long it's been there and what pieces will be included in our tacos . Disappointed. Won't be back. Hopeful they improve from my feedback and continue on.
