A mechanic from my vehicle's dealership recommended that I get work done before it becomes an expensive issue and recommended I use someone other than the dealer to avoid paying more. Burke's was recommended to me since I live nearby. When I got there, I walked up to find a small lot full of cars and no one around. I was stood there a minute wondering what to do, then heard tapping from a dark window. I walked inside to find the owner sitting in the chair at the computer just staring outside. Strike one - My immediate thought was "Don't be surprised if this goes poorly. He should have come out to greet me, that was not the best way to get my attention." I greeted him, explained that my car was running but someone advised I have some parts for the engine cooling system replaced before it becomes an issue. He asked if the car was outside. Humorously, I said, "no, I dont have it with me. I took a rental here." He started to turn around and sit down saying he needs me to bring the car before he can do anything. Clearly missing my humor, I explained I was joking and the car was outside. He looked at me very seriously and said in a grave tone that he was not in the mood for humor and he didn't want to hear that from me again. He then went on to mention that he is having family problems, stated that his mother is passing away and he is not having a good day. I apologized for the heavy time he's having and immediately focused again on the car per his request. Strike 2 - Poor boundaries. I understand that this is a difficult siuation. In full empathy, I never got over losing my grandmother and did not handle it well. I also am a customer in this instance and in a crisis of my own where I am vulnerable for that reason. It is inappropriate to lash out a customer and then blame it on heavy personal issues. He investigated the car, gave me useful information and outlined how the car being 200,000 mi. is more suseptible to overheating at about 150,000 mi., and that I will need to invest $10,000 in repairs down the road. Then asked, do I want to spend that on this car or another one? I had to have a serious conversation with my family about the car because this is now a small labor-intensive repair leading to bigger labor-intensive repairs. The conversation went from reporting the news to blaming me for having a high mileage car and that the problem is not the car, but me as a person. The conversation began to stress me out but wasn't heated. I set the boundary that I would not get involved in blaming, or throwing a temper tantrum because a car does what a car will do and ended the conversation with thank you for your support, let's take a breather and reassess our plan later. I waited for the owner, Kevin, to finish his conversation with another customer to let him know that I would have to look at what the family decides to do, and unforunately my mother seems to think she knows more than him and doesnt believe that high mileage is the problem. He sighed, and asked her name, then her age, and shruggd it off with, "Oh, that's typical of people from that generation. That's just how they are." I agreed with him and started to vent when he stood up and yelled in my face. "I am so tired of your BULLSH*T, you little punk! If I had spoken to my mother the way you did I could only hope to burn in hell for all eternity! I ought to kick your f**king teeth in for blaming your mother for your problems. ... Get the HELL out of my office and if I ever see you again I'm calling the police! ... Get the F**K OUT of my office or I'm call the police and having you removed! You little piece of sh*t!" Strike 3 - 7: I explained that: he was entirely out of line because I am a customer and his behavior is inappropriate; He didn't care. I explained that he edited my conversation to a version that made sense to him while also feeling out of sorts himself and deep in conversation with a different customer; He was convinced I was lying. I called him out for displacing his anger as a result of being triggered by his own mother and grieving; He raged at me more aggressively. I acknowledged that hearing my conversation could be triggering to him, but absolutely none of that excuses his behavior and this is just bad business; He doubled down on threats to bodily injury and calling the police to have me removed. On any other given day, I might not have had this kind of interaction, and I do see that he has good reviews. Nonetheless, I will say this: This level of emotional dysregulation in a business owner who works face-to-face with customers is alarming. We don't truly become adults until we lose a parent and this man is deeply hurt. While many mechanics have better customer service skills than he did today, this industry tends to attract people with poor social/emotional intelligence because they rather deal with machines more than people behind them and that kind of growth is a choice. I hope he finds the healing he needs. read more

This auto shop is amazing! This review might be a little late, but back in 2019, I took a road trip with a buddy out to Texas. I wanted to make sure that my car would make it and not get stranded. Kevin told me that normally he charges inspection fees but that he would waive it and I would only pay for necessary repairs. Sure enough, the only repair I needed to make was replacing my brakes. My car (an old 2005 Accord) had absolutely no issues on that long trip! I was so impressed by that service that now I recommend him to all my friends! Highly HIGHLY recommend this place! P.S. on my first trip to his shop, I was still a broke college student. It was a rainy day and I came into the shop for an oil change. An employee came back and informed me that my tires needed to be replaced. I wanted to get cheap tires and ones that did not even match, but he informed me to get matching ones and not to cheap out on tires, especially because tires are literally the only thing connecting your car to the ground. Mechanic shops are notorious for preying on unsuspecting customers, recommending unnecessary repairs and charging an arm, a leg, and 2 kidneys. If you judge how capable a shop must be to correctly diagnose, repair, and resolve problems with all makes, years, and categories of vehicles you will find this business fair and accommodating. Asking that a procedure involving time and labor be done gratis is patently unreasonable. To publicly display spite for being politely denied free service announces a much deeper problem than what is troubling your car. If you give this shop a chance and are tolerant of the actualities required to do a good job on time, using quality parts, and priced reasonably so they can be in business for you the next time around you cannot be disappointed. Honest and Fantastic shop with a knowledgeable team! They give me fare assessments on all repairs and don't rush me to make a repair if it isn't necessary. They even owned up to an $900 repair they made on my sister's car that was made by mistake due to a faulty tool. When they realized the tool had caused them to make the wrong repair they comped the repair and fixed the correct part in the system! They could have kept it a secret and charged her for both repairs, we would never have known. I truly appreciate that honesty and their care for their fellow humans. I first went to Burke's after another shop screwed up my timing belt change. 500 miles after the service, the tensioner went, taking out the top half of my engine. I think the whole incident was a blessing in disguise because it allowed me to find this place on the recommendation of a friend who's been coming here for years. Since my engine repair I've come here for everything from flat tires to oil changes to replaced catalytic converters and clutches and each time everything's been explained clearly and patiently. I've even just called for advice about other cars and Kevin gave me where to start looking for the problem over the phone. When I lived in San Diego I would drive 100 miles here for routine maintenance and even major repairs and now that I live in LA I still schedule my oil changes for whenever I'm in Riverside, it just feels that good to have a completely trustworthy mechanic. read more

One star because they refused me service. They forgot to fill my windshield wiper fluid during an oil change and they did not like that I mentioned it to them. But since they did do a good job with my first oil change with them, I decided to come back and have them fix another problem with my car. The owner refused to do business with me because he thought I was a problem customer. I came here when my AC was acting up. Long story short, Kevin was extremely helpful. He gave me options and didn't charge for the advice! Since I decided against the costly and barely beneficial AC repair, I came back to him for a tune up/oil change before moving to Oregon. I've gone to Burke's for years. Burke's was initially recommended by neighbors, Daryl & Carol Martin; they are a long-time Riverside residents, were in the used car business, and are old car buffs, too. It was a great recommendation, and in addition to excellent service and good prices, Kevin is a wealth of information; he can explain how one problem ties into the big picture, and is great at diagnosing problems. On a related issue, it's sad that one bad review for 1 star could drop two others, both for five stars, down a point and a half. Could it be that when other long-time customers give Burke's a five-star rating, and a new customer gives him a one star, that the new customer might be a problem customer? Maybe not, but Kevin has always seemed like a very polite and easy-going guy, so if he thinks someone's a problem, maybe they are. After I posted the above, I took my Sienna van in because it had started -- then died, started then died. Once I called and Bryce said to bring it in -- it ran started and ran fine. But i took it in, and, true to the above comments, Kevin explained what the problem probably was - and that I could spend $500 for a new part -- or learn to work the throttle better with an aging (2001) car. We decided to save the $500 toward the upcoming timing belt replacement. I asked Kevin if he'd had a client who was upset about windshield wiper fluid. He had. The client was a man, not a woman, from Costa Mesa (maybe Brinda is a man's name in India), who'd had car problems and a check engine light come on while in Riverside. A friend recommended Burke's, so he came in with that as the problem. Burke's checked it out and found the oil level was really low, filled it with oil, and explained that if the owner hadn't been noting smoke at all, it was probably a recent development, and could be an internal leak somewhere. The owner was upset at the total price, basing his opinion of what the cost should have been on the loss-leader prices for motor oil that some car supplies places advertise. Kevin explained that that is not the normal cost of oil, and wouldn't lower the price. Then the owner complained that they hadn't topped off his windshield fluid. Then Brinda wanted to spend time telling Kevin about things in Costa Mesa, and Kevin declined so he could go back to work. Sometime later, this same customer called Kevin and wanted him to work on his air conditioning, and Kevin declined. So "Brinda" filed a complaint with the Bureau of Automotive Repairs that had Kevin refused to work on his car -- and was told that businesses have the right to refuse to serve any customers -- so long as it's not for a proscribed reason, like race, religion, gender, etc. There are some people that NO one can make happy - and businesses and potential spouses should try to avoid them! read more

If you want to read real reviews from Burke's customers, you need to read those that have been filtered out. Burke's is simply the only place to get one's car repaired if you live in and around Riverside. I know. I've been doing business with the family for over 30 years and have yet to be disappointed. By far the BEST auto repair i've ever gone to. My check engine light was on because of my camshaft sensor but Kevin ran a diagnostic to make sure that was the only problem. It had been a few hours so I called and he expressed every concern he had with my car and what he was doing. About 30 minutes later he called me back and said it was a very minor repair and my car was fixed! I expected to pay a few hundred for the labor and diagnostic but I was so blessed and paid a quarter of what i thought. Highly recommend!! read more
