I brought my car to Glisson's for an oil change a few weeks ago. Yesterday, I was driving (long…read moredistance) and started smelling burning. I pulled into a gas station and found the oil was basically empty. I was surprised, as the oil change was so recent. I inspect further and find the oil filter has a major gash in the corner ... with oil stains around the gash. I add 2 quarts of oil and watch the filter. Sure enough, a drop of oil starts to form on the gash, eventually dripping. My question is: how could this have happened? The gash was way too big and obvious to not be noticed (on the edge where you grip w your hand). Did they knowingly install an obviously damaged oil filter? If so, why?? One theory (and this is only a guess, but I'm otherwise struggling to hypothesize a reason to give Glisson the benefit of the doubt here) -- I remember when I brought my car to them, I was under the weather, so as a courtesy to make sure I didn't spread whatever I had, I wore an N95 mask. The person at the shop looked at me weird like I was their political nemesis, so I explained that I was wearing it bc I was under the weather and didn't want to infect anyone else, but that didn't seem to change their disposition at all. Again, this is just a guess, but I truly cannot fathom why they would have installed a visibly obviously damaged oil filter on my car. (If someone can provide a valid hypothesis, I will delete this review.) Either way, my engine may have extensive damage due to driving without oil to the point it started burning. Arrggghhh.

Update: 3/28/2023 This shop came through for me again, diagnosing and fixing a problem that was causing sensors in the ECU not to even become available, which prevented three other shops from even thinking about what the cause of the issue was, so they just sent me on my way with a failed NYS inspection. After finding a rare part that was needed, Tim was able to fix the car, saving it from the scrap pile once again. I don't know of any other mechanic who could have solved this puzzle. The most interesting aspect of the process was the fact that Tim authenically seemed to care about getting the Celica back on the road, keeping me appraised of the progress, and then even personally calling me back to make sure the Toyota was able to legally pass a NYS inspection. Tim may initially sound gruff, possibly from years of dealing with the general public whose cars need transmission work, but I believe he actually takes pride in his work and possesses what I would call integrity. I have not yet found another mechanic in Syracuse with his experience, problem-solving ability, and honesty. If your vehicle has a transmission-related problem and you want it to actually be fixed, this is the shop you should take it to. Even if other mechanics cannot diagnose or perform a certain repair, take it to Tim. Time is definitely money for him, so leave any frustration-related attitude you may feel about the automotive issue outside, be concise, respectfully listen to what he says, and you will likely have your vehicle back on the road surprisingly quickly. I think everyone can say a big issue you may have at auto shop is just in the service you are getting from them. Are they honest? Do they over price? Owners & brothers Ed and Paul are honest and fair in the work they do. There has been a couple of occasions I was ready to fork over major cash only needed tech work that was at a affordable price. Not only have I brought both my families vehicles to Auto Tech but they also helped me out with purchasing and rewiring my trailer with LED lights. They really can do it all, just give them a call. Things went well until I drove away. I think there are new scratches on my rims but I can't prove that so I will give them the benefit of the doubt. I should have photographed all four wheels prior to the work. The biggest problem was that the tires were not inflated properly. I got warnings right away that three of the four tires had low pressure. To me this is a very basic requirement when replacing tires. All 4 should be inflated to the proper pressure. I feel like this is a very basic service that they neglected to do.
