My second tome here I ordered the Fiend Burger with just lettuce tomato and Ketchup so I would be getting a pure taste of the burger. This burger reminds me of what my dad would have thrown on the grill - minus the lighter fluid flavors. I also ordered an order of onion rings pictured here and again not sure if they are made here or brought in frozen but they are wonderfully flavorful and the fact that they tasted handmade (if they ate frozen) speaks to quality of product. I received great service and was impressed to see the owner interacting with some of what I could tell were regular patrons. Living nearby, I might just become one myself. Jackpot! What a great find. Running into town for a concert and wanted something quick not near the venue. Only a couple cars in the parking lot on a Tuesday evening but the waitress behind the counter was all smiles. We told her it was our first time and she recommend the burger for the first time over everything else. All the toppings on the list are included and free. I actually was so excited about this. I told her more of what I didn't want to make the list shorter. I got the 1/4 ,patty, all the toppings minus raw onion. Picked my sauces. There was a fry big enough to share with the hubby and he got the Fiend size burger. They have Coca-Cola in glass bottles which was fantastic. The food came out fast and tasted amazing. We were in town for an event a few miles away. I did a search on "best burger in Cedar Rapids", like I do. This came up. We ended up going twice. I'm going to start with the fries. These are the best fries I have had in Iowa. No one else is even close. They blanch them before they finally fry them, so you get a nice crispy outside, and a fluffy inside. It's something I got used to in Chicago, but that no one seems to do in Iowa. And please correct me if there is a place I have missed. Both times we each got a burger. It's the butter burger style, so crispy around the edges, and nice and meaty in the middle. Both of ours were cooked a nice medium. The buns are ridiculous. They are so fluffy, so light. They had decent, flavorful cheese. And they give it time to melt properly between the patties. OH! I forgot about the milkshake. I am a fanatic about butterscotch milkshakes. This one was exceptional. Nice bit of butterscotch in it, their ice cream is really rich. Apparently it's from some local place. I want to go there, wherever it is, next time we're in town just to have ice cream. So, best fries in Iowa, one of the best burgers, great milkshake, nice folk, cool little joint. In town for a baseball tournament and Wow! This was definitely a good find. I placed a to go order several burgers and fries. All of the food was freshly cooked and came out quick. The burgers were juicy and delicious. You can build it how you want it with all of the toppings. The gals that took my order and cooked the food were very friendly, and the service was overall good. The only couple negatives were the fries ere a little too salty for my liking, and I almost didn't find the place. Would I recommend Burgerfiend? For whatever reason, I have always thought that BurgerFiend was a dirty restaurant with mediocre food so when my dad suggested it for lunch I wasn't exactly over the moon. Fortunately, life is full of surprises. Yes, the area around it is grody and worn down, but BurgerFiend itself is clean and welcoming. The staff were friendly and very patient with my family being a little disorganized. My grandma ordered pasta salad from the Zaydo's side, while the rest of us got burgers and fries. The loaded Gyro fries here are something I have never experienced anywhere. I haven't been to any other restaurant that offers such a wide variety of quality food at such a modest price. From the the juicy, succulent burgers with bacon mixed into the meat to top class pizza with all the fixings to one the the best, most authentic Gyros in town, Burgerfiend has it all. Not to mention the amazing shakes/ice cream that comes in a variety of fun and unique flavours like black raspberry, blueberry, fudge brownie, pink cotton candy and so much more. The building itself has clean facilities and a friendly staff. The restaurant has a very relaxed atmosphere and has more than enough room even at the busiest of times. Great for families, couples and anything in between. Definitely one of the better restaurants in the Cedar Rapids area and would recommend it to just about everyone! read more

I went here for the first time on a Saturday night. It was surprisingly empty, it was just my friends and I and another group. The interior had a modern look to it. The service was fairly fast, and the employees were nice. I ordered a double bacon cheese burger with pepper jack cheese, and a side of fries. The burger patties had the bacon ground up in them. Which I enjoyed, it made it so you get some bacon every bite. The burger itself tasted very good, but it wasn't that big for an eleven dollar burger. It was good just not good enough to make up for that. The fries were decent, my biggest complaint with them is again the portion size, you don't get very many as a side. Overall BurgerFiend is a good place to eat at. The food and service is good. The portions however I found to be a little on the light side for what you pay for. For a place that brags about a "best burger" award, I was not at all impressed. Ordered a single with avocado and mayo to go. (Note: avocado was not on the menu - just asked on a whim). The place was not that busy, but it took longer than expected for my lunch to arrive. I like the variety of their menu (they offer burgers and pizza, mainly), but thought they could benefit if they offered beer as well. Cleanliness is an issue here, as well. I had to write a quality standard for a hamburger for a Food Production Management class for college. I thought I would go try this place out. The inside and outside of the restaurant look nice. The inside is wood flooring and wood panel with bright red throughout. I was disappointed to see that they removed the natural spring spigot that had been there as part of a historical landmark for decades. I hate seeing history just thrown away and forgotten. This place was not what I had expected at all. The menu did not have any fancy or exotic or cool new burgers. If I were to have a burger place specializing in burgers I would make sure to put a couple of imaginative cool ones on the menu to give people something new to try. Especially with the prices they charge. I paid $5.34 just for a single cheeseburger and $2.99 for fries before tax. It took quite a while to fix then when it came to the table the bun looked shiny and greasy. I opened one side and peaked in. I did not see the tomato and went to complain then opened it all the way and saw a tiny little thin, mushy slice on top of some wilted lettuce and microscopic pickles which were piled all on one side of the burger. The fries were darker brown than any I have ever seen. Ends of some of the fries were actually BLACK. I ate some and they tasted burnt. I made deep fried french fries for the first time in a Science of Food class in college and my first time fries tasted better than these. Come ON people! You can't charge that much for burnt crappy food!! The burger was the opposite. It was barely warm and very pink in the middle. I highly doubt it was cooked to the 155 degrees required by the USDA health dept to kill dangerous microorganisms such as E.Coli. I have no idea how they got the cheese to melt on the burger when it was not that hot itself. The burger itself did have a genuine beef taste and was juicy. The bun was lightly toasted which was nice. The meal as a whole was disgusting and since I did not have time to stay and argue with a manager, I left a note and threw the rest of the meal away. I had to go home and brush my teeth and rinse my mouth with water a few times to get rid of the burnt potato taste. I will NOT go back again!!! That meal was not even palatable, let alone being worth what I paid for it. I can get a better burger at Burger King or Wendy's. The only reason this place gets one star is that the woman who delivered the meal was nice and smiled (The woman behind the counter taking orders looked like she didn't want to be there) and the burger had flavor and was not too greasy. So based on my quality standard I wrote, it failed on texture and appearance of the vegetables, appearance of the burger, temperature of burger and veggies. This is a tough place to review, primarily because of the disparity between the two things that I ordered. If I had only tried the burger that I ordered (a single burger with pepper jack cheese, fried egg, and ketchup), this would without question be a five star review. First of all, it was the perfect thickness. It wasn't super thin like typical fast food burgers, which just get their flavor obliterated in the cooking process. It also wasn't too thick, like when a high-end restaurant decides to do a $15 burger. Those always come out cooked too much on the outside, and not enough on the inside. This burger was the perfect thickness, and was cooked perfectly, all the way through. It also had the perfect level of moisture, juicy but not greasy. The highlight, I think, was the pepper jack cheese. I don't know for sure, because it's difficult to be sure whether certain flavors were coming from the spices in the pepper jack, or the seasoning blend in the beef. Whatever it was, it was excellent, though. The egg was also perfect. That probably isn't impressive to most people, but I cook eggs for myself a lot, and I'm maybe 60/40 on getting them right. I think that they even used a ring, because the egg was so perfectly round that I initially thought it was going to be some sort of pre-cooked frozen nonsense. The fries were an abomination, though. They managed to get them all cut to the same thickness, but they ranged in length from a half inch to longer than any potato I have ever seen. That wouldn't bother me normally, since I'm guessing the thickness is what determines how long they take to cook. (I don't know much about actually preparing food. If I did, I probably wouldn't be paying someone else to make a burger and fries for me.) The problem is that the fries were not even close to evenly cooked. I took a picture, because I was so amazed. If the two fries in the picture had come from separate orders, I would say that they really needed to work on their quality control, but with both fries coming from the same basket of fries, I have no idea how you even do that. Most of the fries were a shade of brown that in my opinion means they are overcooked, but they weren't crispy, and they were greasier than I'm used to. I think that means that the oil in the fryer wasn't hot enough, but again I'm not an expert on cooking. I liked the way the menu was set up. Absent was the typical meal deal, dollar menu, upsizing type of nonsense. A single hamburger is $4.99. Other than egg or cheese, all of the toppings and spreads are free. American or Swiss cheese is an additional $0.50, and pepper jack is $0.70. Fried egg is $1.00, and extra patties are $2.00. Pretty simple. I took my food to go, but I can see what the other reviewer was saying about how you can leave with a greasy scent. I still like an open kitchen, though. It's nice to know that your food is being prepared in a clean kitchen. read more

First time guest. Or at least walked through doors. The girl at the counter let me know they close in five minutes. The workers made it very evident they did not want to serve me. They would rather turn away business than to do what they were being paid to do. They should've locked the doors if they weren't open. Not a great experience.
