I definitely had to make it to this spot on this short trip to the city. I've been seeing it on TikTok and IG for far too long. It was absolutely worth it. I walked in and was immediately greeted by the staff. Music was playing in the background. It wasn't too packed so I was able to grab a table and order my food right away. I had one of their signature dishes of course, the plantain sandwich. I decided on the tassot meat. Everything blended well together in the sandwich, so much flavor with the Pikliz and sauce. It was super filling or I would've ordered a second. I did order a herring pâté to go. Great spot, great food. I'll try more food next time.
I wanted to love my experience at Bunnan, but was a bit let down. I'll start with this - I was a huge fan of their other location on Caton Ave, and was excited to try this location. My group walked in on a Saturday evening and was seated in about 10 minutes without a reservation. Service was slow to start. We had to wave for our server several times, but that's not really the main issue. We ordered the Ti Bouche platter and two rice bowls. The presentation was lovely. However, there was an off putting sour taste in the vegetables I had in my bowl. This made it hard for me to enjoy my meal. My sister's steamed snapper was also overcooked and had a weird rubbery texture. Perhaps the kitchen had an off day. I'd be willing to give them a try again in the future. Maybe when they are less busy.
So I visited this place during a busy time so maybe that affected my visit. When we walked in it wasn't that busy until maybe 20-25 mins of us sitting there. The waitress was nice but the service was off. The 3 of us placed an order and I actually ordered my food first. Somehow my food never came out but my cousins did . I had to get the waitress's attention she didn't even notice my food never showed up. I didn't get my food until the other two at my table were done theirs . She said my food was given to someone else by accident. They did offer a free bread pudding because of the delay. The griot I had didn't taste like traditional Haitian griot and I'm Haitian. It was different but interesting having it in a sandwich. If I was in the area I might stop in and try it again. The place is small but you can comfortably sit.
Congratulations to Bunnan, featured in a recent New York Magazine focused on affordable eating borough by borough. Bunnan was featured in the Brooklyn portion to definitely eat at. Their griot bowl was highlighted with a photo and description. I was fortunate to attend a Brooklyn Elite event last year and the griot bowl was a stunner.. a generous portion of pork and Haitian delights: plantains are a knockout and the picklz condiment is a knockout. I will go back to dine on the jerk chicken pizza which is another knockout. The owner, Nadege Flurimond, is welcoming and has a great personality. I went to Bunnan with my mom and her friends. The plan was for me to just drop them off at a concert, but when it got cancelled, I joined them for dinner instead. None of us had been there before, so it was our first time trying it together. I started with a chicken patty as my appetizer and also ordered the griot rice bowl for my main dish. My mom ordered the lanbi (conch) rice bowl. The table came with plantain chips, which was a nice little start. My mom really enjoyed her food and kept saying how good it was. I thought mine was okay, but I wish they had more rice options like diri kole or diri pwa vet. I am not a fan of djon djon rice, but I was willing to try it. The highlight for me was the griot plantain slider. That thing was amazing. The pork was tender, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. The plantains added just the right touch of sweetness, and the whole thing had a little kick that woke up my taste buds in the best way. Honestly, that was my favorite part of the meal. Our waiter, Race, was awesome. He was friendly, patient, and had such a good attitude. You could tell he genuinely cared about making sure everyone was comfortable and happy. The restaurant itself was really nice inside. The atmosphere felt warm and welcoming, and I loved seeing people from all backgrounds enjoying the food. Haitian food just has that power to bring everyone together. They do not serve alcohol yet, but that is only because they are in the process of getting their license. I can already imagine how fun the vibe will be once they do. Overall, I would go back (and try something different next time). I actually wish I ordered the pizza because it sounded really good. Still, I left full and happy, and it was nice to see a Haitian restaurant with such a warm atmosphere and great service. I'm excited to come back once their drink menu is up and running.
The food was delightful! Our waiter Jimmy was friendly, helpful and quick to answer any questions we had, and since my cousin was treating me for my Jimmy brought this huge slice of bread puddingw/rum in it w/ a candle and wish me a Happy Birthday! Not only was the food excellent, the staff was nice and the owner was so welcoming! + the had me shimmying! For a 1p lunch on a Tuesday, the vibe was it definitely made me feel celebrated Thanks to my cousin for treating me, and to the restaurant for their food, music & vibe! Cepace, Ca va bien!
My brother and I got together to get lunch. When ai arrived I parked on the street nearby. I walked in and was greeted and we sat. We were served by John and he nice. We ordered: Passion Fruit Lemonade Jerk Chicken Plaintain Sandwich Goat Rice Bowl Red Snapper Pizza The food was delicious and my favorite definitely was the pizza! I had a good experience all in all!
Food was incredibly good. Their shtick is plantains in everything. Don't expect conversation- loud DJ with phenomenal music that makes you think you're in a Caribbean beach. They do brunch and lunch. Got passion fruit lemonade, cola lacaya (fruity soda), jerk chicken in a sweet plantain boat and jerk chicken nachos with tostones. The flavor and complementary simple ingredients. Seated right away with plenty of free street parking.
Visited family and went for a casual brunch on a Saturday. Not too busy inside just 1-2 other parties. Small place but very nice tropical decor. The had a DJ and I thought the music was great. At the risk of sounding old, it was a littttttle too loud for me personally. Gave me the vibe of a bottomless brunch place so I was surprised they didn't offer bottomless. I ordered the sweet plantain oxtail sandwich which came with a side salad, as well as a rosemary biscuit. It was delicious! Very flavorful and perfectly spiced. I was going to order iced coffee with non dairy milk but they were out of almond milk so I switched to the passion fruit lemonade and it hit the spot. Service was friendly and quick. Cool spot!
First time visiting BunNan Haitian Restaurant in Flatbush with a party of nine, and the restaurant was clean and welcoming. Our server, Jimmy, was excellent, friendly, attentive, and very knowledgeable about the menu. Jimmy started us off with plantain chips. The first portion felt a bit small for our group, but the refill was much more satisfying. The appetizers were tasty, and overall the food was flavorful. We ordered the jerk chicken plantain pizza, fried pork plantain pizza, and two oxtail rice bowls. All dishes were delicious; however, the oxtail rice bowl was disappointing. Why? Not due to lack of flavor, but because it lacked meat and had too much bone for the price, which both my husband and I noticed. On a positive note, Jimmy's recommendation of the plantain bread pudding was spot on and greatly appreciated. His outstanding service, from thoughtful recommendations to promptly clearing the table and being very attentive, really made the experience enjoyable. The great reviews brought us in, and the delicious food and Jimmy's service may very well bring us back.
The service is attentive. Race had good energy (that's his name). We just walked in to grab food on a dead Tuesday. The food took about 20 to 25 minutes, but the wait was filled was good conversation. Let's get into the food! We had 2 sliders with sweet plantain, 1 griot (fried pork) and tassot (goat), AMAZING ! The perfect amount of spice and sweet. I ordered a rice bowl with jerk chicken. I wouldn't order that again because the chicken was really salty and spicy. I've been told Haitians don't have a " jerk" taste. So it made sense that the taste was off. We also had a Tassot plantain boat. This was really good but spicy. Everything we ordered had pickleys on the side.
I was here last Friday with my Yelp Elite friend for Happy Hour. I had the Jerk Chicken Plantain Slider, the Griot Plantain Slider, Chicken Patty, and Passion Fruit Lemonade. Everything was delicious! The staff were really friendly and the atmosphere was great for a Friday with the DJ and game night! Definitely will be back there again soon
Great location! I don't remember what used to be here but this is a great new restaurant for the area. I feel much more secure ordering vegetarian food here than in some other places nearby. Order to go, or sit here for a while. Beautiful decor especially the wallpaper, and custom ceiling fans. Sweet staff who are genuinely interested in giving diners a good experience, building local relationships, working with the community to advertise events, etc. Mushroom slider: mmmmm spicy! tangy slaw, umami mushroom, crunchy plantain it's a slider so it's just an appetizer right? wrong! surprisingly filling without feeling heavy. i had the green plantain but will definitely go back for the sweet plantain my only issue with plantain sliders as a concept is that the filing... slides off. so i also ordered the cups; same ingredients but in a cup shaped plantain. Much better ratio of filling to container, less mess, easier to eat. It's great in person, and survives travel and eating later. I love that they use lined cardboard instead of plastic.
This place made love plantains again! This restaurant is very aesthetically pleasing to the eye from the color scheme to even having a live DJ. Our server was so nice and tended to us while making sure everything was properly taken care of. Yall now this food? Immaculate. The combination of flavors was great and the portions did not miss at all. The dressing that comes with the cabbage was sooo tasty. The patties stole the show with enough meat inside and the dough was perfect. The lemonade was a nice refreshing drinking to wash everything down. After reading other reviews and seeing the pictures, I felt very let down by both the taste of the food and the service at this restaurant. Upon arriving, I noticed that the music was loud, but it didn't bother me too much. However, the waiter was extremely difficult to hear, and it didn't seem like he could hear us very well over the music either as we placed our orders. The food presentation looked great. I ordered a bowl with griot and added oxtail, but as you can see, there was no oxtail in my bowl. The service was a mess, and the wait for the food was long. Some of my friends' orders were never placed, so their food arrived late. When I was almost done eating my bowl, I informed the waiter that I had never received my oxtail, and only then did they decide to bring it out. After the long wait, the oxtail tasted terrible, and neither my friends nor I wanted to eat it. Overall, the griot was good, but it consisted mostly of large chunks of fat. I'm not sure if that's just how the restaurant prepares their griot, but there was far too much fat for my liking and not enough actual meat. The bathroom also had no toilet paper, and needs better ventilation since it is a single-stall bathroom serving the entire restaurant. Overall, I was highly disappointed with my experience and left feeling very annoyed. read more
This was my first visit to BunNan Haitian Restaurant in Flatbush, Brooklyn, and the experience exceeded my expectations. I ordered the $16 lunch special to go, which included a green plantain sandwich filled with griot, a small salad, and passion fruit lemonade. The food was absolutely perfect. The griot was expertly prepared: tender and well seasoned with a citrusy flavor that makes authentic Haitian fried pork so delicious; less is really more for this dish. The meat tasted fresh, flavorful, and carefully cooked; it wasn't greasy, dry, or overly salty. Instead of traditional bread, the sandwich was made with fried green plantains. The small salad was fresh. . The passion fruit lemonade was tropical and really refreshing. For $16 the quality, portion and overall value is not bad at all. (They also have $5 happy hour specials). I waited approximately 15 minutes for my takeout order, but it was worth it. The food tasted freshly prepared rather than rushed or sitting around and microwaved. A special thank you to Paolane, the hostess. She was sweet, professional, patient, and genuinely helpful. Since this was my first visit, she took the time to help me understand the menu and choose my order. Her excellent customer service made a wonderful first impression. Although I ordered takeout, I noticed that the restaurant was very clean, comfortable, and inviting. The climate control was perfect which may seem like a small detail but it made the wait much more pleasant. The décor was tasteful and polished. I also noticed that dine in meals are presented on adorable wooden style plates and bowls which adds something special to the dining experience. I also ordered a Haitian hot chocolate for my grandson. He is a very picky eater, so I'll update this review once it passes his official taste test. BunNan delivered authentic flavor, thoughtful presentation, excellent service, and impressive value. I wish they had a long Island location but I will definitely return!! Two visits in two days, the flavor was that good: today's chicken & plantains waffle with Kremas syrup was the best chicken & waffles of my life. Beautiful presentation, to boot. My prior visit I enjoyed the plantain lasagna that doesn't look like much but it was a flavor riot. Staff both visits were incredibly friendly with myself and all of the customers. Saturday visit included a live DJ. One visit I sat at the bar and watched Haitian cooking shows on their TV by reading the subtitles. Second visit I sat by the window and felt like I was in the jungle. I haven't written a Yelp review in years, but this place was so good I had to. read more
Portions, especially for the rice bowl, were huge, and service was amazing! We tried both the sweet and savory plantains, and both were excellent. I really enjoyed the jerk chicken. The griot pork was a little bit drier than my preference but if you enjoy a more charred flavor, I think you would love! We also tried the passionfruit lemonade which was super tasty and exceeded my expectations. Definitely going to come back to try more of their meats. read more
Griot Rice Bowl was very delicious and fresh, I will be back for sure! I came across this restaurant after searching Google and reading reviews. Also on yelp and decided to give it a try. I'm from Florida so I've had some great Haitian food so I was glad that this lived up to the hype and the service was great as well. I've been wanting to try Bunnan for a whileeee now but getting logistics together required a lot for me lol. I was given the opportunity when I saw the there was going to be a distribution of Soup Joumou for New Year's Day. As an honorary Haitian lol, every year I go where Soup Joumou is so I took it as a chance to get a taste of Bunnan. As we arrived and entered the door, I immediately felt a sense of being in a cozy home. We were then met by the amazing Owner Nadege who was so warm, sweet, inviting and knowledgeable. I arrived with my best friend who is Haitian and we talked about Haiti and I expressed visiting one day. I also got us some Haitian Hot Chocolate which was amazingggg. It was very warming as there was a chill outside. I drank some alongside some Haitian hard dough bread which was dangerous lol. My love for carbs is too much so this was the perfect pair. I had my soup when I got home and it was delicious and filling. One of my favorite soups with pumpkin, pasta and beef yummmm! I will definitely be back for the restaurant's namesake Bunnan which is Plantain :-) read more

Dish Ordered: Grand Manje Platter, Mushroom- Rice Bowl, and more Visited With: I'm Haitian, and I was in NYC with my friends and wanted to give them a taste of Haitian food. Service: (100/10) Listen -- Jimmy is the best waiter ever! Jimmy was so fun, kind, and patient (because some of my friends were a bit indecisive) and gave great recommendations. Not to mention, he was funny as hell! Overall, the service was phenomenal! And we even got to meet the owner. OMG! It was like meeting an old friend. She was so nice, we yapped for like 15 minutes, and she was honestly a breath of fresh air! Food: (10/10) The food was beyond good! Everyone I came with was so satisfied with their meals. I absolutely loved mine; everything was well-seasoned and complemented each other perfectly. The drinks were delicious and not too sweet, which I loved. We even had dessert, and as someone who doesn't have a sweet tooth... listen -- I FUCKED THAT SHIT UP! I WILL BE COMING BACK, AND I WILL BE ORDERING EVERYTHING ON THE MENU. TAKE MY MONEY! Ambiance: (10/10) The ambiance was relaxing. We sat outside in the back, and even though we were the only ones there, it was peaceful and beautifully decorated. The whole restaurant feels very thoughtfully and intentionally designed. If you stop by, pay attention to the little details. It actually gave me a flashback to Haiti. Very heartwarming. Overall: A++ This is a great restaurant! If you're feeling homesick, please stop by. I promise it'll warm your heart. EAT HERE ASAP!!! My friend heard about this restaurant on Tiktok and took us there on an NYC daytrip. I've had Hatian food before so I was familiar with the slice and flavor and thought this would be a simple lunch outing. Jimmy V, our waiter, was super patient and attendant--helped us pick out appys to try as well. One friend got the Full Size Ti Boush Platter, one got the mini Ti Boush, and my other friend and I got the djon djon rice bowl with jerk chicken. The DJON DJON RICE bowl was so phenomenal, I had to peek into the back kitchen to see who was cooking. I had to PHYSICALLY stop myself from clearing the bowl in 10 minutes. A nurse at a nearby hospital had told us to eat here as soon as we could, because by lunchtime everything was sold out. It did NOT take us long to understand why... The food here was amazing.! As I knew it would be. I don't eat meat just seafood so all the food I ordered was aligned to my diet. I had a mushroom plantain sandwich. It was very tasty. I had a passion fruit lemonade. Just the right amount of sweetness. I had a mushroom rice bowl, pate, some type of fritter and bread pudding. Everything was great! I'm definitely going back.
