First things first, it is incredibly hard to find a surgical dermatologist. In this field it often seems like aesthetics over everything. Before the pandemic ruined everyone's life I was being seen at 2 practices in north jersey - the first one didn't seem to understand why I would be bothered that my alopecia spots weren't healing and the second practice stopped taking insurance after my second appointment. As each injection is hundreds of dollars lmao that promising relationship ended quickly. Healthcare for the rich indeed. For the last 5 years I've been managing the patchiness on my own to inconsistent effect. Recently, another unrelated issue requiring surgery kicked me into high gear to find a new provider. I sought recs from my local FB group, friends and family, etc but they all kept leading me down cottage skincare and other lanes. It was actually a good old-fashioned Google search that led me to Dr. Patel. Bravo on winning the SEO game! From the moment I called (and rescheduled thrice due to car trouble - dang it MINI), the office was welcoming, accommodating, and scheduling relatively quick appointments. On my first visit, Dr.Patel and his team were thorough, curious, and caring. I felt so comfortable with them and I felt like I mattered. In many ways women become "invisible" after age 40 - add race and body size to the mix and it can be difficult to get the care and compassion needed to navigate health challenges. Dr. Patel suggested I get a full blood work up - and actually caught my low iron and anemia. So many somatic mysteries cleared up just because someone listened and cared. I have a surgical procedure scheduled in a few weeks that will bring me immediate comfort and the topical meds and injections Dr. Patel is giving me have restarted hair growth in some persistent patchy spots. I called Dr. Momeni's office a total of three times to vet my insurance, the doctor, and his process before driving an hour for a consultation with Dr. Momeni. I spoke with two different women, including Shannon, and I was extremely thorough. I provided my specific UHC ID number and plan details. The first woman I spoke with told me they accept UHC "as an umbrella" no matter what the plan is. I didn't just take her word for it--I specifically asked for an official check to be efficient. She said sure, I know we take it but I'll "verify". She put me on hold and came back and said "Yes, we take your plan." I even called back a second time to double-check and was told "Yes" again. Momeni was scheduled as an early morning appt, I drove an hour, and took time out of my day. I filled out all the paperwork, gave insurance and Shannon came out and smugly announced they don't take my plan. Instead of treating me with kindness for their massive administrative error, she had a look of pure condescension and blamed me. She accused me of "putting myself in this position" by not disclosing my insurance--a flat-out lie since I gave them my ID number and they supposedly did an "official check" on it. When I responded that I would never do that, Shannon responded with a silent stare-down that lasted a full minute, and then said, 'We don't take your insurance' in a very stern, condescending voice. This was very disconcerting and patronizing. She behaved arrogantly and dismissive, as if she were trying to belittle me. It was frankly embarrassing to be treated with that kind of smugness after I had already double-checked my insurance with their office. And to be accused to deception is something that should have never happen.

Appointments with Carly Overland, PA often felt rushed (around 10-15 minutes), and I rarely felt there was enough time to fully evaluate my condition or discuss treatment options. I was prescribed medications like Rinvoq and Nemluvio, which require careful monitoring, but the risks and long-term considerations were never thoroughly discussed. When I raised concerns about a self-administered injection medication, I was told I could "take the shot or not -- it's ultimately up to me," which felt dismissive when I was seeking medical guidance. The front office experience was also concerning. On multiple early visits, staff member Mary Lou could be heard gossiping about patients within earshot of the waiting area. When I transferred my care to another provider, obtaining my records was unnecessarily difficult. I was initially told they had been sent, but two weeks later learned they had not. I was then told there was a $25 fee to mail them because the office cannot transfer records electronically. My records were eventually faxed to my new doctor, who raised concerns about the medications I had been prescribed and the potential long-term risks of taking them together--something that had never been discussed with me. Communication with the office, including staff member Brandi, eventually stopped after I raised concerns about these delays. Insurance also denied coverage for a prescribed injection medication due to documentation issues, forcing me to pause treatment for two months. Overall, communication within the New Hope office felt disorganized and poorly coordinated. Patients dealing with complex dermatological issues deserve careful monitoring and clear communication, which I did not experience here. Additionally, the practice's public response to my review included inappropriate assumptions about my family. The office also called multiple times from owner Dan Schrager's number even after I requested written communication and blocked the office line.
