BuildSmart made all my dreams come true! I got 3 bids for my 1952 renovation, and David was right in the middle with exceptional value and understanding I wanted a partner. We ripped half the house down to studs, added 2.5 new bathrooms and an ADU, opened the kitchen, installed new windows and doors, redid plumbing and electric... plus gave everything a modern facelift. A year later, BuildSmart redid my front and backyards adding natural gas hookups and a custom fire pit. Beyond! I love my home and am forever grateful to David and his team for bringing my vision to life. Professional, experienced, well priced, funny and kind. Truly the best. read more

David has done multiple projects for us, and we're really happy with the results! It's always a pleasure working with David. He is very easy to get a hold of if you have any questions. this was our first time renovating a place and we are living in it while we renovate, so we anticipated that it would be a bit chaotic but this team had made it so smooth. not only do David and his team provide a great price point for the work, they are thorough and so professional. we work from home so we have been home all day as renovations have been going on in our bathrooms, kitchen, hallways, bedrooms, etc. and I have watched them work every step of the way and am so pleased with the quality of work. we have also tried to do some stuff DIY and when it has fallen through David's team has been able to swoop in and save the day. I can't recommend them enough. they are basically part of our family now. read more

I decided to work with David again after many positive experiences with him on my bathroom and kitchen remodel. Once again, David knocked it out of the park. He was responsive, always finished the project on time, and never hit me with hidden costs. I had a very specific vision in mind for my outdoor grill area and David was super patient with helping me bring my vision to life. He custom built the pergola, the outdoor bench and grill area, as well as install the patio tiles. And he didn't stop until the finished product was exactly what I wanted! I would highly recommend BuildSmart to do just about anything you need at your home. They're the best! read more

Last year BuildSmart Construction completed several projects at our home. The projects involved roofing, painting, plumbing, landscaping, electrical and the installation of an electric gate. BuildSmart did an outstanding job. Recently, I needed to add an additional remote control to my gate. I was unable to locate the new remote and I contacted David, the owner of the company. One year later, David was as helpful and professional as last year. David sent me a link and I purchased the remote. I then had difficulty programming the new remote and David took the time, via the phone, to walk me through the programming process. The new remote works great and David, once again, provided first rate service. It is so difficult to locate contractors who are willing to help. David and his company are professional, competent and willing to help. I would be very willing to hire BuildSmart for any future projects and would recommend the company to anyone looking for an honest and reliable contractor. read more

The absolute best!!! Wish I could give David and his team 10 stars. They renovated our entire house, a 1920s Spanish bungalow, to perfection. It feels brand new but maintained it's old charm and character. David and all of his team members are extremely professional, fast, reliable, and really care about their work. They provided us with new ideas and suggestions, but always listened to our feedback and respected our vision. They're all incredibly friendly and respectful, and I will never use or recommend anyone else for any contracting needs. Incredible pricing, timing, craftsmanship, and all of the above. Use BuildSmart!!!! read more

This project involved replacing and widening my driveway and apron as well as replacing my entire sidewalk and pruning the tree and tree roots that had caused the sidewalk damage. Because the sidewalk work was being done under the LA City's Safe Sidewalk Rebate Program, there were special permitting requirements. I was extremely happy with Buildsmart. David, the owner, exhibited true expertise in dealing with the various city inspectors and special requirements. The job was finished on schedule and the results are beautiful. The crew was great and cleaned up after every day to keep the impact on me and my neighbors to a minimum. I get regular compliments from my neighbors and passer-bys on my beautiful new sidewalk and especially my driveway. Starting to plan some other projects around my house and will definitely be using Buildsmart. read more

Overall quite happy with stucco repair and paint. The Good - David is perhaps best communicator of any contractor I've worked with. All workers showed up on time and work took about quoted amount of time. Schedule changes were handled well. Finished results met my standards. Price was reasonable. What could've been better - 1. No use of mask, even after I mentioned to David. He said it was due to extreme heat; but mask wasn't worn ever by anyone, even when cooler (morning) weather prevailed. I would expect mask wear at least when customer nearby, regardless of temperature, especially when customer is a sexagenarian. 2. I specifically asked during initial meeting to have wall painted behind an outdoor (laundry room type) sink. This wasn't done completely until I pointed out to worker. 3. I was unsatisfied with one area stucco repaired. After back and forth with David on phone (who said my expectations were too high), he sent someone to redo. I am pleased with follow-up repair. 4. Paint drippings on ground. Cleaned up after it was brought to David's attention. In conclusion, I would use David again. In the end work was good. Like a lot of contractors, you just have to hold your ground on what you expect and inspect final work thoroughly before final payment. Based on my impression after one job, I would expect David and BuildSmart to do good work at a fair price and stand behind their product and service going forward. Also, suggest they wear masks, at least around customers. read more

We didn't know there was such a thing as an honest contractor until we met David. The key to David's quality is his attentiveness. He listens to what you want and communicates throughout the process to make sure his team is on the right track. More importantly, he has the ability to extrapolate what you want without you having to say it. This was perfect for us, since we only had a vague idea of what we wanted our house to look like. He envisioned what we wanted and gave us useful feedback on what would work and what would not. He was flexible and could adapt easily to changes we wanted on-the-fly. He gives you daily updates (sometimes more frequent) on progress. David explained every aspect of the project in detail so that we felt knowledgeable. If you've never worked with a contractor before, this is IMPORTANT. Some contractors will gaslight you, using nonsense jargon to defend their cheap and poorly done methods. There is an asymmetry of information and who are you to judge? Anyways, David took the time to explain every detail and was happy to answer questions about construction in general. This opened up the door for exploring options for how we wanted our house to be worked on. David is a kind person. Besides being a good contractor, he treats his employees well and is always a pleasure to talk to. He took the time to help me with some DIY projects by explaining what materials and tools I needed. As far as pricing, David is unbeatable. He itemizes each work item and gives you a totally transparent estimate with no hidden fees. It is all laid out in front of you. He will finish on time, too. His team works overtime to meet deadlines. If you fancy yourself a handy person, David will work with you to do some of the work yourself and help lower the cost. I got David saved in my phone for our next job (and for our next house party). read more

Three and a half. My second time around with Buildsmart was disappointing. I hired them to add two gate doors for my house. The whole process took a little over a month .It took over a week for David to come to give me an estimate and we had to reschedule because he was very busy. After that, he said his guy would come measure on a certain day and he didn't. Pretty much whenever he said something was gonna happen on a certain day, it rarely did . I felt like I slipped through a crack and was forgotten and had to call them and remind them about me. I never got an estimate from him initially, and had to contact them for updates on stuff. I felt like a bug a boo. They are still cool nice people but my experience overall was not what I expected. In the end I wish I had hired someone who just did doors because when I called and talked to companies that only did doors they told me it would take a week. Btw I called these companies after Buildsmart (or his workers) flaked out on another day they were supposed to show up. I experienced many other snags throughout this simple process that I haven't included. Bottom line is I think they are experiencing growing pains. Too many bigger jobs on their platter and more profitable than my little job. Next job I will try someone new. Don't get me wrong, they are very nice but I'm rating on timeliness and satisfaction overall. read more

The best experience I've ever had working with a contractor. David listened, was patient, worked with detail, used quality materials, and competitive, if not, the best pricing. I commissioned David to build a 2 car carport and also enclose a garage door into a wall. David was my first of 3 estimates, and should've just saved time and went with him. The other 2 contractors were pushy, didn't have an imaginative vision, and just seemed to try cut corners and charge as much as possible to generate a higher margin of profit. David came with the perfect idea, created a carport that I had envisioned and couldn't be happier with the results. I'm looking forward to the next project! The most important aspects of hiring a contractor IMO is trust and the willingness to work with what the customer wants. David exceeded all my needs/expectations. He and his employees are hard working and courteous. I've had 2 other contractors work on my home and am certainly glad I met David. I'll know if I ever need work completed on my home, David is just a call away. I can't thank the Buildsmart team enough! read more

I wanted to have some stone work done, and got David's contact information from someone that had done some previous work on my home. I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted done, or what kind of material I needed/wanted to use. When David came by the first time, I told him what my basic plan was, and gave him a basic idea for the type of color scheme/material I wanted. I was expecting David to just show me what the options were and give me some basic prices.. but instead he took a lot of time to actually walk me around my house and go into detail about what type of stone would look best and helped me re-focus where I should be putting the stone, and the areas I should leave with the original look (being stucco). In the end, my original plan would have cost me a lot more money, as David advised not to "overdo" the stone work as it would take away from the effect and told me exactly which parts of the house would get me the most bang for my buck with the stone work done. After we agreed on a plan, his crew came the next week and got all of the work completed in about two weeks. I was out of town while much of the work was being done, so David made sure to send me picture updates of the work so I could confirm that everything was looking how I wanted. So when I came home it was really nice to see the final product completed. Everything turned out amazing, the stone work looks very nice and I am constantly getting compliments from my neighbors and anyone that visits the house. And not only did David help with all of the stone work, but also spent some time with me to figure out the best color to paint my house that would go well with the stone work that was already completed. I would definitely recommend David and his company, they do great work, and David was a pleasure to work with the entire way. read more

I had the privilege of doing business with David Lahmi last year. Over the course of three months I grew to understand just how lucky I am to have him as my contractor. The skill set and creativity, motivation and determination, vision and execution, professionalism and payment plan, care and ownership, cleanliness and timeliness, positive nature and attention to detail, and most important...high moral standard David brings to the table are unmatched in this business. I don't say these things lightly. Working in cardiac surgery, I tend to over research, analyze, and obsess on detail. In order to select a contractor to add 400 ft.² to my house, completely change the façade of our home, and a laundry list of other changes both inside and out: I researched over 100 local contractors and met with the 10 best for initial interviews and quotes. After a second round of interviews, 3 surfaced as good candidates. I went with my heart for the final decision. What most people don't understand is when you choose a contractor; you are choosing a family member (at least for the duration of your project). Like them or not, they will always be there and you have to deal with them through good times and tough times. I am happy to say I chose David to be a part of my family. And I am glad to say I will choose him to be a part of my family for future projects. I recommend David Lahmi and his crew whole-heartedly without reservation. Research has shown homeowner satisfaction with contractors is based on two things: 1. Quality workmanship 2. Stress reduced experience Be wary of choosing the lowest bid. They are hiding "change orders" for added cost along the way or they will "cut corners" and use cheap materials. Both serve to reduce homeowner satisfaction. read more

I needed a fence replacement and was very pleased with the service provided by David and his team. They are very friendly, capable, organized and efficient. David provided a reasonable quote for the fence and two other projects and all was completed within the planned time. The fence is a beautiful upgrade. We recently had a fence, shed, small deck and some minor siding work built by David and his crew at BuildSmart. We could not be happier with the final results. They exceeded our expectations. The results have a real craftsman-like quality and have added true value to our home. Overall, the service that David and Brenda provided was excellent. He took time to sit down with us on the estimates, lay out ideas, and provide the full cost without anything hidden. They completed all of the major work and the touch-ups we requested. It's nice to finally meet a contractor who is friendly, reliable and responds to any questions you have any time of the day. In addition, as the other reviewers write, there prices are very competitive and David even tries to come up with ways to save you money if it can be done. We will definitely be using them again in the future for bathroom and kitchen remodeling. Thank you, BuildSmart! read more

I do NOT recommend BuildSmart and David Lahmi! We did a downstairs renovation and an upstairs bathroom renovation. The scariest thing is that they left and apparently the job was done. I found a gas leak that night under our stove. I called our reliable plumber and he came out immediately to fix it. Things were done wrong throughout the entire project. I should have stopped it and gone with someone else. I am paying other contractors to fix things he and his employees have done wrong. They messed up throughout the entire renovation. I purchased expensive materials to make our home beautiful. I have uneven porcelain tile flooring throughout my downstairs. The marble tile on my kitchen walls are uneven as well. Chandeliers are not lined up properly. Cabinets are not lined up. A cabinet door doesn't open all the way. The detail on a door frame was ruined. There was a leak under our new kitchen sink that David was not able to stop. My plumber fixed that the night he fixed our gas leak. They scratched up a brand new washer & dryer set. I could go on and on... When other contractors (electrition, plumber, painter, ...) have come in to fix things, they can't believe what horrible work that was done. I'm still having things fixed. read more

David and his team are fantastic. Very professional. Work gets done on time and beautifully. They did two consecutive jobs for me: I initially hired them to repair crumbling brickwork and retaining wall in front of house, but they did such a great job that I immediately got a bid for a second job: demoing my old fence and removing huge bougainvillea to build an 8 foot tall cedar fence. David understood what I wanted, had great suggestions and used quality materials. His prices were very competitive -- and I know I got more than I paid for. read more

David and his crew recently built my covered patio, did the insulation underneath my house, installed a turbine ventilator and sealed roof vents. From the first moment, I met with David I knew I wanted his company to perform the work. He LISTENED and understood exactly what I wanted to do with my covered patio. He shared his experiences and knowledge about the work, and even provided some wise suggestions which I listened to, and did not regret. David is a person you can trust and know that he has your best interest in mind. His crew was great work with and did an awesome job. I am extremely happy and satisfied with the work and craftsmanship David and his team provided. read more

Preparing an old home to be leased out I had the good fortune of being introduced to Build Smart Construction by my realtor. I needed a decorative metal safety railing installed along pathways of a large hillside home. It had to both match the existing railing and be anchored firmly in cement footers strong enough to prevent anyone falling. I also had to replace a wooden entry gate and secure it in a metal frame to be bolted to the house and another fence. I already had two bids on the job but chose to wait for Build Smart's bid after the Fourth of July holiday. And I am so glad that I waited. The reason I chose Build Smart Construction was not only because their price was the most reasonable, but also because while talking with David about the job it was immediately evident that he understood exactly what I wanted and had the skills and experience to do the job right. He made several suggestions that none of the other contractors I interviewed had mentioned, and which were improvements on what I had envisioned. His manner was both businesslike and friendly, and remained so throughout the project. He explained everything clearly and did exactly what he said he would do. His crew was very hard working and efficient. In fact they finished the job ahead of schedule for the agreed upon price. I even added a couple of small jobs which David and his team completed without any extra charge. I fully intend to use Build Smart for other projects in the future. read more

We hired David to build a retaining wall for our backyard as well as new gates, fencing, and a small deck/stairs. Not only did he come in with a a very competitive price for all of the work, he also finished within the estimated time. The work was very well done and we've received loads of compliments from our neighbors as well as general passersby. David was always available to discuss any issues and when there were he addressed them promptly and without complaint; he was also very knowledgable about what needs permitting and general building code issues. This was our first experience hiring a general contractor and it was a good one. We would definitely recommend David and buildsmart for any of the kind of work we had done. Since he began his work here several people in the neighborhood have hired him as well, and we can be confident that the work will be attractive and good quality. read more

BuildSmart did a great job replacing a redwood fence in our backyard. We live in the hills, where the soil and terrain are not easy to work with. David sized up the situation quickly, gave us a good estimate, and he and his crew did the entire job professionally and efficiently. The fence looks great, the workers were friendly and polite, and they left our yard very clean during and after the job. Brenda in the office was great keeping us informed of all the details. They were a pleasure to deal with. I highly recommend them. read more

When I needed a new fence, I got three bids. David and BuildSmart hit the middle, price-wise. But the deciding factor for me was his knowledge and expertise. He saw issues and offered creative solutions that the others did not. His crew was good, on time and on schedule. The materials and approach all were top notch. They even threw in a small stucco repair project on my house just to close the deal. We had one small miscommunication on a minor detail. David and his team made good on it with superior workmanship. I would use this team again without hesitation. I recommend the work, the reliability and the customer service. And of course, the fence. read more

Build Smart did the addition and remodel of our house in Westchester. My husband and I met with David Lahmi, the owner, and we both liked him right away. His assistant Brenda is also wonderful. David has great energy--he is positive and always has an attitude of "Sure, we can do that," which was very reassuring. Whenever David came to the house (which was nearly daily through much of the project), we all enjoyed being in his company. David has the ability to fix most anything, including electrical and plumbing issues, since he is always educating himself in his trade. He was very accurate in his estimation of how long the project would take to complete. After our project was over, some minor issues came up, and we called David, and he sent his guys to fix it the following week. He treated us like his own family, with warmth, respect and great follow up. The only complaint I had was that David didn't give me much notice whenever I had to go and pick out fixtures, lights, etc. I would've liked to have had a timeline to follow so I could plan those purchases, rather than being rushed. Other than that, I would highly recommend David in helping you with your building projects. read more
