This is a classic hardware store. Like a neighborhood ace more than a big box store. The biggest difference when shopping here is the help you receive. All the workers here actually know how to use the products they sell. Not only that but they will educate you how to use the things they sell. Try finding that at Lowe's. The store is smaller so they don't have everything but I'm always amazed because they have what I need. I have been shopping at the Builders sStore for probably 50 years. Yes I am that old. This store is family owned and hires retired employees with various skills you would expect in a hardware store. So advice is readily available and free.This is what sets this hardware store apart from the big box stores. You can buy one nail or screw or bolt and you get the same personal attention as the person buying hundreds of them. They have a large and varied inventory from which to choose. Mark, the owner, is there every day helping customers and giving advice along with his very able employees. This store is located in a neighborhood, Sunnymede, in South Bend and services the neighbors as well as the entire area. I grew up a couple of blocks from the former Minkler's Hardware on Portage. Old Mr. Minkler had everything, and free advice for whatever you were working on. The Builders Store reminds me so much of Minkler's. As others have said, it's like stepping back in time to how hardware stores used to be (and still should be). But they have up-to-date stock, including electrical. And it's a great place to get car keys duplicated, electronic fob and all. Most of the guys who work at the Builders Store have such a "dry" sense of humor, sometimes you don't even realize they are making a joke. Going to the Builder store is like taking a step back in time when the hardware store is where you went for what you needed, (the first time). The staff is knowledgeable and quite patient in explaining how to complete any home repair. This is the kind of place where customer service still means something. No big chain BS, just helpful, knowledgeable, patient, (I cant emphasize this enough) staff. I don't understand what manner of witchcraft they employ, but for a small place, they always have exactly the size and style of whatever gizmo I need. I went in today to get my snow blower serviced and ready for winter, and was helped by Mark the owner. The same snow blower I purchased from them nearly 20 years ago. They have serviced it since I purchased it, and it still starts on the first pull. Skip the big box stores, and give them a try. I don't know the name of the gentleman that helped me yesterday when I was at Builders Store. I was trying to get my Lawnboy Utility 2cycle pushmover repaired. Everywhere I went I was told it would be two weeks before they could get to it. Anyway at Builders I was given a name and number of a guy that did lawnboy repair out of his garage. Yeah, I don't know if these are the same operators that were running the place when this occurred or not. But generally, when you go in here, you get very personal attention. They ask you what you are looking for, and will do their best to find it for you and make sure it is exactly what you need. This happened many times for me with a five-star experience. However, once, when I was doing landscaping, and I needed a spark plug for my Stihl trimmer, and didn't know which one to get, or much less if that was what was wrong with it, the guy helping me didn't insinuate, but came right out and asked if my trimmer was stolen (probably because I didn't know the intricate workings of the small engine I had, I guess) ... insinuating that I was the thief, I assume. I told him, "It might be (stolen), I don't know. I bought it at the pawn shop." I paid him with my company (landscaping namesake) credit card, which I hope clued him in to what a jerk he had just been, but ... wow! ... lose two stars ... easy ... if not more. read more

Friendly place where they will help you find exactly what you need, at the same prices as big box stores but with superior service, and you can support a local small business. About 6 months back I was looking for a part to fix a dripping faucet, something I had never done before. After spending an hour each at Lowe's and Home Depot with no results, it was suggested I try Builders Store. I was greeted as I came in the door and after a brief wait while they finished helping another customer, they helped me find the part I was looking for and figure out exactly which version I needed for my faucet. After talking for another minute to get some details about the problem I was having, they then told me that rather than buy the $15 stem kit I had asked for, I could just replace the seat washer on the stem for $3 and keep the stem. Worked perfectly and it's become my go to hardware store from then on. read more

These guys are the best. Often with small, local hardware stores you are paying extra for knowledge and experience. But these guys offer the best of both worlds - they have a deeply knowledgable staff and very competitive prices. Some of their tools cost significantly less than at the big box stores. Of course, other things cost more. But none of the prices are outrageous and on average I think you save money by coming here. (I did recently buy a larger item from amazon, since it cost Builder Store more to special order it than it did for me to have it shipped directly. But this was a special case, since it had to be shipped.) Selection is a little smaller than big box guys, but it's carefully and thoughtfully curated. In sum: the staff is friendly, highly helpful, highly knowledgable. I don't go anywhere else unless I have to. read more

Great customer service! I have been several times and am very impressed with their process. Meet you at the counter, ask for what you want or answer all your question if you are unsure about what to buy, then walk you to the place or just pick it up and you pay at the counter. Very knowledgeable staff and time-saving. I find the prices similar to the other stores. Definitely support local business. read more

Fast and friendly service, small mom and pop store. I needed parts for my snowblower as the warranty had just ran out and snow is on the way. These guys were the closest to me so I called them, they are more of a hardware store but according to Google they serviced my brand of snowblowers. Wasn't sure if I had the money for them to service it, and was pretty sure the repair was simple enough to do myself. So I asked if they had the parts I needed, they did, and if I could come pick them up right away, I could. I ran right over, grabbed my parts, and the owner even gave me a quick rundown on what I needed to do, and the right tools for the job. After buying the parts and the tools, it was still cheaper than the lowest price I found online. I will definitely be going back for all my Toro needs. read more

These guys are the BEST! Great customer service, they carry plumbing parts for the old houses in the area that are hard to find anywhere else, and all around knowledgeable about all things hardware.
