***Everything in this store is from a commercial retailer. You will hardly find an interesting, unique piece that has history. Just the same recycled corporate merchandise from bulk retailers: H&M, forever 21, Urban Outfitters, Target. All that is mainstream. I even saw a couple American Eagle shirts. Wtf? Thrown into the mix is the most random Ross/Marshalls round-up of commercial 'designers' and 'brands.' It's dress code for anyone living in a sprawl. Yes, that's right, everything you can find in a typical suburban mall, you will find here. That is never a good thing.
And is it just me or is this particular buffalo exchange overpriced. I used to work at Urban when Buffalo Exchange first opened many, many moons ago and I was not impressed, the selection sucked compared to other locations. Their collection has since improved while the prices continue to increase. Perhaps this has something to do with the rent for the space? I'm guessing the rent has been raised on them several times over the years. Not entirely sure. But if that's the case, then it would make sense for the prices to have drastically gone up. But it's still not a good enough reason to force a price increase, they should simply move locations and find an affordable space. I remember the days of buying a shirt for less than $5! Those days are long gone because there's been this surge in thrifting. The market has expanded in the past 10 years. This growth is creating the jump in prices. But the sudden increase can't be justified. Low prices are after all, the heart and culture of thrifting!
The other day, I found used men's no name, faux leather dress shoes priced at $40?! The condition was fair to poor. You can buy new ones at H&M for $50. The manufacturer's quality is the same but for 10 bucks more, you will have them in new condition, which will last longer than some dude's old, beat up shoes. It should have been priced at $20. Button up tops are going for $15-$20 now, really? Tanks at $15. That is not much lower than regular retail value. You can find similar crap that is new and priced the same at TJ MAXX believe it or not! I haven't visited a Buffalo exchange in years and was surprised to see these inflated prices. They've turned thrifting into a commercial practice. It's sad to see price inflation as a trend in this humble market. It's become wretched. They've spoiled the art of thrifting.
What happened to the good old fashion days of thrifting? At these current prices, I might as well just wait for a sale at a commercial retailer or pay regular price and a few dollars more for a brand new item that is in good condition than some of the items they charge for here, which will only lose its shape after a few washes because they're so damn worn out. Some shirts are in such poor condition that they won't last a single wash but the prices don't reflect that. The buyer at this store needs to take a hard look at the current market and base prices competitively against other thrift stores. This is Buffalo Exchange for god sake not a thrift boutique. Maybe they should consider moving locations if the rent for their space is too high because it's at the lab, where all the vacuous charlatans prance around in sheer glory of all their irony and misguided indifference. And there are way too many employees working at one time at a small shop as this. If they are scheduled properly, then the prices for goods might not be so high. I guess the days of thrifting are dead. No more steals at $2, $3, $5, $10! :(((((( Perhaps they should consider moving locations and find affordable rent elsewhere so that they don't have to continuously hike up their prices. The going rate for their items are just not reasonably priced for a thrift store. read more
