Quick service, chill spot, delicious food. I like this place better than Chipotle. Will get food from here again!!

    Ground beef burrito
    Bob M.

Went here midweek with my daughter. After some discussion, we decided that we didn't want to go to either of the competitors as the drive was too far. Having visited the Somerville location a few years ago, I was not enthused to go here. We visited the store around 6:30 PM and found it to be clean and quiet with people only sitting at one table. These days, I think that's a bad omen. That didn't dissuade us from ordering a couple of burritos, chips and drinks for roughly $26 total. The price seems to be competitive and the going rate, although these days feels astronomical. Regardless of that perception, we had a completely different experience than what I remember at the other store. Our burritos were hot, I had grilled chicken and my daughter had the ground beef. The toppings were plentiful, flavorful. and fresh. The only criticism that I have was probably due to my ordering method, but they heaped the toppings on so heavily that the burrito was hard to roll and they didn't drain the juices first so the tortilla started falling apart and dripped steadily the whole time I ate it. I think the alternatives are plenty, get a bowl next time, double wrap it, skip the pico, etc. We enjoyed our respective meals and the skateboard themed decorations as well as the 90's alternative music in the background. We'll be back. My daughter suggested that she would add queso to future burrito orders and I suggest avoiding or at least dialing back the onions as they are quite strong.

Dry Wings in a pool of sauce
    Craig M.

Pretty rough. I got wings, tots and a burrito. The wings could have been decent if they hadn't just poured a ridiculous amount of sauce over them. So I had dry wings sitting in a puddle of sauce. Can't understand why they wouldn't be tossed first, then placed in the container. Pouring that much sauce in a to-go container is inexcusable. The tots were overly oily and devoid of any seasoning (salt?). The burrito could best be described as bizarre. Woody chicken, mushy wrap, cheese mush. Nothing fresh or crisp going on with this burrito. For a place that seems to be pushing a west coast fresh food motif, they are putting out some sad food. I knew this was a fast casual place and my expectations were low, but they surpassed even my low expectations.

Had barbacoa tacos - the barbacoa barely had any taste unlike other options in the area. Not recommended.

Stale chips, barely cooked quesadilla, and missing sides. It's a shame I used to love this place...

This has become our go-to place in a pinch. My son loves the burrito bowl - tons of food and tons of guacamole.

Over priced for mediocre fare. The menu is uninspired and ultimately there are better choices in town.

The quesadilla had a very nice crust on it without being oily, which is usually the case for good, crispy quesadillas.

Turns out that CB has not fully undone the rebranding. You will see places where the logo no longer has an old man by the barrel. The triangle games at the tables no longer say "Four or more you're just plain ig-no-ra-moose." I miss that. They went PC. More importantly, a couple of things here I never encountered previously: someone to greet us as we walked in, the ability to pay from your table instead of up front, and a completely revamped menu. So, the menu has a lot of new dishes, a section with the old favorites - both for the mains and the sides - but I definitely did not have the comfort level here that I'm used to at a CB. Food? I'd say we're still where CB has always been. No change to my fried okra. They accidentally brought a second mac & cheese, let us keep it. They brought cornbread and biscuits while we waited (I asked), and then another bowl with the meal - let us keep it. Very nice! Cornbread still as addictive as ever, biscuits nice and soft. The mac is OK, maybe better if you upgrade with the bacon bits. My third side - I went up for onion petals, and those are mostly breading. Skip those, even if the dip was nice. Get the dip with something else. Too full for dessert, though they have ones I remember and new ones as I figured. The special seasonal lemonade - I think it was strawberry peach limeade - was interesting, the lime threw things a bit but I appreciated the "different" flavor and there was totally puree in there, strawberry seeds I could taste. That was . Verdict: Some things never change. Some things change. But the Barrel's still Crackin' to meet you.

Wasn't sure how many people we'd be, but the place looked big enough. It wasn't. Not for the crowds of people stuffing Cryan's on Saturday night, drinking at the bar, eating at the tables. Clinton doesn't have as many people as Cryan's did that night. Incredible. So we put our party down to a 40-minute wait. Time went on, a few people left, a few drinks happened, and finally the rest of us got a table together. Minus for service - the waitstaff was not very friendly to our group; granted, we were forced to stand due to lack of seating, but they didn't give us any helpful tips or any sympathy. Drinks were just "are you ready?" and then handed out. Food experience went a little bit better. The food itself was fine, mostly because none of us ordered pizza. It's bar pies here - super-thin crust, comes out crispy, which may be your thing but it's not mine. The onion rings look fantastic - huge, but with a lot of breading, and I didn't have enough of an appetite to down that by myself. I ended up on the Baslick Burger, ordered rare, and it actually came out pleasantly close to rare. Other people's came out to their order as well (medium and well, one with a subbed side). Nothing spectacular, but nothing bad. Same for the fries. All in all? It was an experience. But not one to walk into blind. Maybe if I was local I'd go on a low-volume night, otherwise I'll stick to some less crowded vibes.
