This is a little gem of a campground that's pleasantly filled with comforts and modern amenities. The campground itself is very small, but it's quiet, & has a steady body of water. I will be staying here again. I spent the weekend sitting in my hammock and enjoying hearing the water. 5/6 of the cabins face the water just as an fyi, so it's like a private paradise. The town of SoHa is really fun too and a great place to wine, dine, & explore. The cabins are basic and rustic with one plug in to charge your electronics. There is one light in there but it does get dark at night. Bring a nightlight. The queen bunk beds are great and comfortable. I would say more like 2-3 people could comfortably sleep in a cabin due to space and the cabins get hot at night! There's showers, there's toilets, there's cabins- oh my! The showers run on a unique token system. 1 token=$1=3 minutes of hot, private, shower. Tokens are purchased on site. the showers are game changers because they're open 24 hours with cameras outside so the owners monitor who goes in/out and your safety. As a queer person, I felt comfortable & safe at this campground.

Combined, the trails are only about 3 miles in length since this is a narrow, alongside-the-lake State Park & the trails go from the main roadway, to the top of the bluffs & then back again to the roadway. Further down that roadway is a campground, a good amount of parking, a playground, picnic tables, grills, open fields, and, the best part of all, the mile long beach, which is comprised of super soft sand, space to stretch out, a not-as-enjoyable view of a water treatment plant, & the fun of collecting smooth, soft stones that dot the beach, The waters of Lake Michigan don't come much above your waist for a good 75-100 feet, so it's easy to stay cool while you stand around with sisters (that was us!), and others. We prefer not knowing our next door camper neighbor's business. I was looking for a campground to stay at for the weekend. But, every public campground was booked till October. I happened to stubble on Kal-Haven Outpost in a google search and this place was way better than I expected. The owners are a young couple who juggle their business and their little children simultaneously. But, they do their best being focused and attentive to their customer. They answer all my questions and always return phone calls (when I attempted to call them and they were busy). Our spot was in a wooded area and was about 50-75 feet away from the next door campers. Our campsite had a fire ring, tent area and picnic table. The bathhouse is accessible for everyone staying at Kal-Haven. The bathrooms were extremely clean and awesome. So much nicer than any other campgrounds I have stayed at. And there are very nice showers with a bench and hooks for hanging clothes and towel. I would recommend this place to everyone in a heartbeat! New, clean and nicest place ever! And I love the office/store/gift shop!

Tent-campers review…read more I grew up camping here, and have brought my kids back to make their first camping memories as well. The park is clean, friendly and most of it is well-shaded. The sandy beach is flanked by picnic tables &benches, and a water trampoline is anchored out a ways for the big kids (and adults) to play on. The bath house is large enough, and always kept clean. The showers are coin-operated but I don't mind giving up a quarter to scrub up. There is a little camp store with all your little incidentals, ice, soda and a decent supply of candy for the kids. They have a large park on site, complete with climbing equipment, a basketball court and even a permanent corn-hole area. Now to explain the 4 stars. Everyone at Timber Trails is very friendly and fun loving, but I wish the staff would institute a noise policy after dark. The kids slept fine due to exhaustion but on a few occasions I was kept awake til after midnight (once til 2am) by rowdy parties on the other end of camp. Their cackling and yelling could be heard over the entire park and nothing was done about it. Timber Trails would be great for RV camping (crank up the A/C to drown out the noise), or even a bunch of hard-partying tenters, but we'll be making memories elsewhere from now on.

While the previous occupiers of our site hadn't bothered to clean up after themselves, we got it done quickly, and it was no big deal. Always, always, ALWAYS leave your camp site cleaner than when you arrived is our immutable, unbreakable rule. Bethany and Gregory, the owners, are absolutely wonderful hosts; incredibly friendly, hardworking, and welcoming. The site itself was absolutely gorgeous. We chose a primitive site, as we roll heavy with a full solar power array and bring our own water. We were tucked far enough back to give a fair bit of privacy, but were also lucky enough to be near the porta potties, which, trust me, at 4:00 AM, is a very nice perk to have. Dune Lake Campground is a very nice, quiet, family oriented campground just north of St…read moreJoseph/Benton Harbor area. The campsites are well situated and clean with level areas for a tent or RV. Many sites are provided with both electrical and water access. The camp has a dump station on site and also has staff who will dump your tanks at your site for a modest fee (so you do not have to unhook and move, then rehookup back at your site during an extended stay). The bath house is an older facility but is kept clean and in excellent condition. Showers are free and hot. The on-site lake is small and very nice for both kids and adults. Access to Lake Michigan is available just minutes away at a public access beach. Across the street is a Nature Conservancy area with several trails. We decided to take advantage of the option to book a site for the whole season (May through September) for our RV. It has been a wonderful decision. We can pack a small bag and be in the RV enjoying the sights and sounds of nature in less than an hour without towing or setting up anything. We really enjoy this area and this campground.
