I don't do Yelp or Google reviews. I am making an exception because of the incredible service I've received from the liquor store located inside. The entire store is above and beyond but the employees in the liquor store section are a breed apart. I am a consistent customer. One of my favorite things is that no matter how often you go there they check your ID to your card. They make sure no one is scamming a card. Plus as you get older being carded feels good, lol. All jokes aside they are professional, polite, and friendly. I have been talked down to and insulted at other stores. They have been unfailingly respectful and helpful. I can't recommend this establishment enough. Mo in particular is amazing but so is the rest of the staff. I don't have everyone's name off the top of my head. However, there isn't an employee there that hasn't helped me or given me anything but a solid recommendation. Given a chance I'd hire every one of these people and steal them. Far and away the best liquor store in the state and I travel a lot. It isn't the biggest store and it doesn't have the largest selection but it does boast the best staff. If you're going to be in Eugene I highly recommend Bruns Red Apple Market as your go to liquor store. Plus they're open til 10 even On Sundays! You can't beat that. Again, Mo is the bee's knees. I might be biased but they're awesome. In fact every person that works there has never been anything but awesome. Normally any place you shop at has that one person. You know. I am in town visiting my son and staying at a hotel within walking distance to this grocery store . I found it to be clean and reasonably priced . The parking lot was pretty full and the staff seemed friendly enough . I even had a short conversation with one of the cashiers about the Thai restaurant next door and stopped there to pick up dinner for the night . I got a few items for my room and noticed the liquor store was pretty popular with a line to get in since only 6 people allowed at a time due to the Covid restrictions . They also have ready made sandwiches and items for a quick bite to eat . Seems like a nice neighborhood grocery store with pretty much anything you need and cheaper than like a 7-11. Staff are wonderful. Don't know what people are on about. But the place doesn't seem very well kept. It looks run down. But the one thing that really bothers me is the clearly rotten food on display. I was in the produce section on May 17th, and noticed the "organic" grapefruits were squishy and moldy. I bought a French bread pizza from them to eat the next day, only to discover that it has mold on it. There goes my money and my lunch. This level of quality control (or lack thereof) is completely unacceptable. Someone could get very sick! My main gripe has always been that they freeze, thaw and relable things like bread and other products that were never intended to be frozen. That causes inconsistencies in the texture and shelf life of those products. That is completely ridiculous! The last review claiming mistreatment of their patrons!!. I have seen in person the ownership and management assist with someone mentally ill and another incident with a shop lifter. They are kind respectful and firm. They tried in both incidents to avoid incarceration or arrest. The mentally ill lady was so combative, screaming and kicking, I don't think they had an option but to get assistance from health care mediation affiliated with Eugene police! She was scary! I have seen this experience and firsthand the shop Lifter who was asked to return the food he grabbed and he did with no further incident ! No hand cuffs either incident or abuse ! I have frequented this store for almost two years and love the staff, management, especially owner! He will cut me thick pork chops, great fresh meat like noone but market of choice, very fresh and very reasonable pricing ! They keep my lemon eddies vodka on hand ! Love the sweet people working there! They face challenges everyday in a tougher neighborhood but I strongly believe they do a fantastic job! I shop there as I feel they keep me safe and I like this store and have no fear shopping there ! Easy to throw rocks, try living with the challenges they have and doing it with diplomacy and respect as I have witnessed ! If you can't shop there, you have gone way too far, as they are so tolerant and kind, they probably gave you or your so called friend more than one or two chances. You own your own behavior and need to stop blaming a store that does their best to protect all patrons !! They deserve respect for the sensitive way handling what they must! They are always positives and upbeat! It's not the stores job to know how to handle a mentally deficient person, they are not paid psychologist, they are store clerks that prevent harm to another patron. I've shopped here for years and it's always been a great store. The meat dept. is the best priced in town, I've just never understood why anyone would want to pay more for the same item elsewhere. The produce dept. has declined a little over the years but I think that has to do more with what is available, I've noticed the same thing at other stores. I really like the deli. I've always found the employees to be helpful and friendly. Some canned and frozen items are priced a bit high when compared to other stores, but you'll pay more for meat at those stores, so it all comes out in the wash. read more

To start, the bald headed manager walks around without a mask, or mask over his chin half the time i shop in the store which doesn't bother me personally. I walk into the store without a mask and immeadeatly ask an employee for one, and I'm told they are $0.50. I don't agree so I ask to speak to the main bald head manager, and am told by him as well it's $0.50 a mask. For someone who gives no s*** about masks to begin with to stand behind charging $0.50 a mask to patrons who spend thousands of dollars a year at their store, is a poor joke. Needless to say I won't be spending money supporting a business charging people $0.50 for a mask if they forget one whom spend thousands there yearly. I adore this place! It is an absolute god-send in the Whitaker District where I live, where there are no other supermarkets other than two very teeny health food stores where the range is extremely limited. The size of the store is perfect - large, but not too large. And because they stock only food and not random weird stuff like clothes or crock-pots or whatever, they crsm a lot into a small space. They have a deli, a good selection of fresh bakery items, an entire in-house liquor store attached if that's your thing, and a great selection of fresh produce that I find to be way better than the freshness quality of Fred Meyer. The staff are efficient and phenomenally friendly, without being fake, which I value. My only suggestions for areas of improvement are stocking more "value" items. They seem to do well with this in some areas (potato chips for instance), but poorly in others (tinned vegetables, say). I would also appreciate a much larger range of vegan ice-cream. They tend to stock a lot of the more traditional (aka plain, arguably boring) brands of vegan ice-cream like So Delicious and Larry and Luna's, which is wonderful, but why they don't also carry pints of vegan Ben and Jerry's or vegan Magnum bars is utterly beyond me. I love this market. They go out of their way to provide excellent natural food in addition to all of their regular food. I need to eat gluten free products and they have a great supply of delicious gluten free granolas and breads plus more! They also have amazing lactose free cheese made out of yogurt. This helps me as I am dairy intolerant. I had vertigo this week. I was not able to drive so I called them up and spoke with Tom, one of the owners. He said to email him a list of what I needed and he would deliver my groceries to me. Awesome! When I offered him a gratuity, he would not accept it. I love this market. You can get a pretty accurate idea of this place from the looks of the completely empty parking lot and horde of homeless college students hanging around out front. I walked in, walked around for about 30 seconds and walked right back out. Just being in here I felt dirty and cheap. The floors were sticky, the displays were not in order, and the layout it a little confusing. No fresh products other than a small selection of bread. Red Apple, as is shall always be known, is an interesting place. On one hand, it caters to the "other side" (the non-yuppie side) of the Whiteaker - one that lives off food stamps, gets into fights by the can return machines, and is comprised of a lot of starving artists. The fluorescent lights are intense and the shopping carts are circa the 70s. For me, going there used to be a potentially scary, or at the least, unpleasant experience. On the other hand, the prices are decent and the product selection is not terrible. They are actively adding more organic options and have good deals on wine. There's a long aisle of Mexican products. There are also a lot of Western Family products. Because of space limitations, there isn't a Fred Meyer-status amount of things to choose from, but you could easily do your weekly shopping here. My only complaints are as such: I can't find non-gross meats there (the chicken and salmon are factory farm), the produce is limited (I can't find eggplant), and most ot the employees are stony-faced. They have answers to my questions, but they're not particularly friendly. However, I've never had a long wait there - if people pile up in line, another cashier opens up to get people checked out. In conclusion... This market is not a bad option, especially if you're local to it. I find most everything on my grocery list at a reasonable price, and I'm in and out pretty quickly. read more

Great neighborhood market - great customer service with friendly, often quirky staff. The selection isn't like what you'll see at larger stores but I do almost all of my shopping here. If you can't find something they can order it for you! I needed nutritional yeast for a recipe and the next time I went in they had some. I am also very happy with their vitamin and medicine selection and pet aisle! (They have multiple brands of lightweight cat litter - Albertson's doesn't even have that). They also have an excellent selection of grab and go food that you can buy with food stamps, probably the best selection of its kind that I've seen. I only dropped one star because it could really use more produce. However, they really try to serve the diverse community and do an amazing job. I lived across the street from the Red Apple in the mid-90s, and spent many an afternoon/evening watching an Apple employee beat down and detain a shoplifter or three. I'm pretty sure that a black belt in some Far East Ass Kicking Art is required to work here. A converted Safeway, the Red Apple boasts a pretty decent beer selection--it's the only place I've ever seen quarts of Dead Guy Ale. The Deli corner is pretty sketchy, but after 7 pm, the fried chicken (which is very good) goes on discount. This requires some pretty good planning, as it's usually snatched up fairly quickly. As far as selection goes, RA is average, but they do have a lot of items attractive to the Latino community. I'm talking pig's heads, cow's stomachs, brains, lots of variety meats. Several types of tortillas, chiles, Mexican cremas y quesos, and a modest selection of exotic and/or organic produce (cactus paddles, cherimoyas, etc.). As a Mexican American who grew up in a small hick town, the access to these items delights me in a way that, well, I can't fully explain. I'm in no hurry to chow down on any cow's stomach, but the fact that I can buy one here makes me happy. Service is sometimes rude, and many customers here are of the wifebeater and mullet variety. Definitely a place to check out if you're in the neighborhood and really need a pig head or some tripe or a very large bottle of beer. read more

It's a bit like walking into a time warp here like it's still the 80's complete with the same shopping carts and department indicator signs (minus people smoking while shopping). okay the bad first: being in the area that it is, it can feel a bit sketchy at times. This isn't my primary store but it slowly could be and here's why: they are continually seeking customer input for what the people want their neighborhood market to carry. they have a steadily growing organic produce selection. A lot of the meat they carry is locally/regionally sourced. they also have a pretty decent selection of beer and wine. oh, and i admit to having a bit of a very occasional soft spot for their deli food. it's very 'classic' supermarket deli food you know, like fried chicken, jo jo's, other deep fried things, potato salad, pea salad, mac salad etc. none of that market of choice kale quinoa super food salad crap (which i love too but yeah). anyways, I really think they are well on their way and can't wait to see what more progress is made. read more

Cheap food is hard to find these days, but Red Apple has it. Beer prices are amazingly competitive here, and the deli has pretty good cheap greasy stuff like mac-and-cheese, for those days your arteries seem a little too clean. Don't worry, you won't overdo it on the deli food - the deli is only open between like 1:39 and 1:43 on days with no "y" in them, or something like that. Do not (shake your head back and forth and repeat after me: NOT) purchase a sandwich or anything else containing lettuce. The employees hate dealing with lettuce - it's green and squeaky and they just don't like it - so they have a special mix of sand and mud behind the counter that they smear all over the deli lettuce. You think I'm kidding? Go ahead - git ya some. Think of me while you're spitting the grit out on your shoes. Okay, the Apple is a bit of a dive. So why's it get four stars? Well, it is a real, honest-to-goodness grocery store...and it's in the 'Hood, baby! Check out the Dollar Aisle, there must be something you need there. Plus, you can get a tortilla press, lengua, and menudo (or tripe, at least) at the Apple. Organic produce? Don't be silly - it's Red Apple, not Red Barn. Giving the staff shit is not really recommended, either (see Travis' review; he's not kidding, nor even exaggerating). You might get panhandled in the parking lot - deal with it, that's part of the Apple's charm. Steer clear of the checker who has the same name as Billy Joel's drummer - she's cool, but you probably have somewhere else to be sometime today. If you're looking for high-end food, there's Red Barn, where it's all organic, and there's Trader Joe's - same idea. There's lots of places to go, if you don't want the cheap, low-quality food. The deli section can be a bit iffy - relate it to getting food from a school cafeteria. The rest of the store is halfway decent. The butcher section has cheap chicken that can be saved, and is tasty when cooked. My mother knows the employees, and they can be nice. Local teenagers in need of jobs have been known to head there. You might get mugged in the parking lot, though. Don't leave your kids in the car. read more

I've lived near this market for over a year now, and I go there almost every day. They are friendly, helpful, and make a point of opening another register immediately if more than two people get in line. They offer a rather diverse array of stuff for a store of this size, including affordable organic options for folks like my picky hippie roommate. In my experience, the meats & produce have always been in great shape and really well priced for me - for example, the ground beef costs nearly half what I would pay at WinCo. It's also helpful that they shift a lot of their hot deli food into a cold case in the evening so folks can buy it with food stamps; meat loaf or a breakfast burrito is a much better meal-on-the-go than a Lunchable or whatever. There are often mark-downs on items I would be getting anyway, though they have been known to run out of popular shelf items and stay out of stock for days. This store, like the Whiteaker neighborhood in general, may have a bad reputation from days gone by, but it suits me perfectly and makes me happy. Not once in over 300 visits has anyone in the parking lot hit me up for change or a cigarette, even though the bottle return machines get a lot of use by our more underprivileged neighbors. I'd rather shop at this Red Apple than some haughty ol' Market of Choice any day - and I do. read more

This is our local supermarket and I love it. We go there like most people go to Dari-Mart, sometimes twice in a day if we're a little spacey. But more and more I realize it's also a really good "big" market, unique and with a real personality, getting better each year since the Brun brothers bought it. (See the reviews from James L. and Tanaz P. - they write better than I do so they're fun to read, and I agree with them both.) Very diverse clientele, a real sense of belonging in and caring for the neighborhood, exceptionally friendly. And you know what? Their prices are surprisingly competitive with large chains. Their range of conventional and organic products is good, growing and getting better. Especially gluten free, lactose intolerant, and other specialist products. They ask for and respond to customer feedback, and it shows. The in-house butcher counter is friendly, has a decent selection, and will cut and/or order you anything you want. Customer service is excellent. And there's never a line. Never. Yes it's sketchy, like the neighborhood and clientele, and old and dated. Prepare to enter the "Twilight Zone" upon laying foot through the door. No selection and what is there seems old and sickly. I love this store. I agree with a previous yelper that it's a time warp. I like that it doesn't have a giant stick up its ass. I feel good shopping at this store unlike the horrible feeling I get when frequenting Capella's and don't get me started on Kiva's (That's right, I'm thinking of you Deli Prick). I eat organic but I don't like the atmosphere of those stores. It's suffocating. Pomp, I can't stand the stuff and glad I never got hooked on it.
