Im going to give this place two stars for sheer entertainment! If you are looking for a good laugh, with a whirlwind of interestingly seedy characters, look no further. Prepare to enter the "Twilight Zone" upon laying foot through the door. No selection and what is there seems old and sickly. The shoppers and staff alike seem to be in a zombie state weaving in and out of the isles with clown-like grimaces. (note there are a few staff members who are quite nice and are always cool, well polished/presented)...They Have a recycle center which draws a consistent crowd, so anytime is a good time! This was a easy walk from my short stay at the Whitaker Hostel and I found the selection and prices acceptable. Apple Turnovers and Taco-stuffed Potato from the Deli Counter delicious after using the hostel microwave. All washed down by the Vanilla OM Stout made by your local brewer on Van Buren. I was not hoping for the Berkeley Bowl or Whole Paycheck, but much better than a nearby 7- Eleven or the market on the other side of the railroad. Go Bears! Beat Ducks on 9/30! read more

This is s hidden gem! The products are always changing but it keeps the prices low. I'm very thankful for their presence in the neighborhood. I would look here before going to market of choice or whole foods for speciality organic and vegan items. Staff is always nice as can be even when they are overwhelmed with customers. They even have a suggestion box for items or brands youd like to see. read more

I live right near here and its a shame i wont be able to shop here. Poor selection, mostly cheap shabby products, almost no produce section. Way too expensive for what they carry. The whole place is jus sort of dingy. Cannot recommend to anyone read more

Oh Red Apple, you are a dying breed. One part neighborhood market with a smattering of hippy flair. Two parts mad dog 20/20 across from ninkasi 22s. I can get chicken toes and organic local tofu in your aisles. I can return my malt liqueur 40's and hansens all natural soda cans if I don't mind the queue at your bottle return. How well you accommodate the eclectic tastes of the folks who wander your store. If you were a person we'd totally get trashed on Pbr tall boys and sh*t talk the state of punk rock anarchy in the "whit". read more

It makes me sad to read the reviews that start off stating that this is someone's local neighborhood market and how wonderful it is, and here is why: My fiance and I have been coming to this store literally on a daily basis for 4 years, and so I am obviously recognized and known here among the employees. But I was appalled at the treatment I received one day by one of the store owners when I was checking out. The checker was a new employee; I had never seen him before. And even though I am clearly over the age of 21, plus the fact that between my fiance and myself, we purchase Pyramid Outburst at this store every single day, I was asked for my ID. Problem: I have my ID, but it is expired. I do understand the importance of having current ID, and most generally, I do have. Life has been tough financially lately. But I digress! So the new employee asks to see my ID, and so I laugh and show him my expired ID... with the hole punched in it...(however clearly showing ME in the photograph)... And he tells me he can't accept it and he can't sell me the beer. Wow. So I notice that his boss just so happens to be in the cubicle next to the cash register, and here he comes (I'm thinking to my rescue of course- he'll step in and inform the new employee that I am a regular customer, so no worries, you'd think). Well that's what I thought anyway. But I was wrong! Instead, the store owner (one of the co-owners) sided with the new employee, and unbelievably, because I told the employee he didn't have to be a jerk, he told me to leave the store! I can't believe I was told to leave! Told to leave after I was insulted so badly- It was just an all-around, unbelievably sucky experience that I find hard to believe happened! It felt like a betrayal too, since we've been in the neighborhood for 4 years and have always come here for actually TOO many things-- I'm ashamed to say we spent way too much on groceries at this store as well. This is the best budget grocery store a starving student could ask for around the corner. They've got a surprisingly good selection of international and organic foods and pretty good local beer section, too. What makes this place really great though is the friendly, down-to-earth service. I've never had a grocery store offer me so many freebies or so much help before. Great, kind owners, great store. read more

This is now my neighborhood market and I'm glad they are here when I don't want to drive downtown to the larger supermarkets. This place isn't huge but it has the essentials. They even have a liquor section within the market that you have to be 21 to enter but it's awesome since grocery stores in Oregon can't sell liquor on their own. Brun's has an ok produce section, frozen section, snack section, beer section and things like milk, meat and eggs. I don't do all of my shopping here but I can usually get what I need for a good price. It's never that busy in here so I'm usually in and out pretty fast. The cashiers here are awesome, I just found out they even have a stamp card and when you fill it up you get 3$ off your next purchase! Awesome! There's a deli where you can get sandwiches too if you're just looking for some lunch. They keep it pretty straight forward and simple here so if you're looking for a gourmet artisan experience this isn't the market for you. not happy about posting event flyers there after being told I can and then having them taken down, someone apparently is not wanting to see me promote myself, they justify their action by taking everything down. This has happened to me twice, I think it's rude, and gives an air of superiority. When I call the staff management about it, their attitude is one of complete indifference, total lack of community support, and a feeling of power and control. It's the closest place to buy food, so it gives a feeling of you are spending your money on getting things you need for survival, while they take down your means of your livlihood. 10/17/12 Just spoke with owner, and he's telling me to bring in another flyer and he's going to initial it. After speaking with him, I don't believe he took the flyer down. So hopefully, will stay up this time. I'm sorry if my prescense is upsetting anyone in the community, or anyone that works there. I just wish for a little more respect that's all and acceptance. I'll change my rating to 2 stars for now. read more

I think the place has changed a lot since people were reviewing it. The lettuce is just fine, as is the deli food, there is plenty of organic food. They have an organic produce section that keeps shifting around and grows and shrinks seasonally and lots of vegan food, etc. The Mexican aisle has lots of high-quality products, especially spices and vanilla and hot chocolate and cookware, and the dollar aisle is pretty typical. Everything is clean and neat, actually. It probably has a Mexican look if you're simply not used to Mexican stores (pinatas hanging up, 20 flavors of organic tortillas), but if you are, it looks pretty mainstream and Albertsons-y. The prices are still great, they're very giving (they sell holiday dinners at Thanksgiving and Christmas at COST, okay?) and I haven't seen a shoplifter get a beat-down in 5 years (since they fired their hot-headed checker). But shame on you if you'd shoplift from Red Apple anyway! Give the store, and the neighborhood, a break! Between Red Barn and Red Apple you are way ahead of the people dependent on Albertson's or Safeway. My favorite store, period. on Edit: Travis is right, but the 'dApple has mostly moved to machines with the bottles and cans. The 7-11 nearby has way more crap from those bottle-and-can smelly guys. read more

I have been shopping here for years and have had no issues until they hired some older man who treated me very poorly. He demanded that I open my bag and empty it because he was under the impression that I was stealing from there because I didnt buy anything. I was in the store for about 3 minutes looking for bathing supplies and when he said they didnt sell what i wanted, i went to leave and he got aggressive telling me stop and without any proof told me i couldn't leave til i emptied my bag. I did and i only had what i bought from mini pet mart. I will never shop there again because the other employees allowed him to treat me like a criminal and didnt stand up for me. I don't appreciate discriminating behavior such as that and he had no right to act that way without any proof of the supposed theft that never happened. If they fire him and apologize for his actions, I may consider shipping there again. read more

I live a few blocks from Red Apple. Like the other reviewers pointed out, this is a true neighborhood store. The staff almost always have a smile on their face and are helpful. The do an awesome job carrying a diverse amount of food for the diverse community. In fact I only buy my free range, non hormone chicken and organic milk there because their price can not be beat. The store goes perfect with the diversity of the neighborhood. To the responder that said the store made her feel filthily: Yes, there are vagabonds around but, after living here and walking to Red Apple at least a few times a week for the last year, have never, ever, had a problem. There are just people, and Red Apple treats them as such! I hope the store always is a part of this neighborhood! read more

Very little do I stop by this market and when I do, it's because I forgot something and they are the only thing close by. Today I stopped by there and I went to the deli and I saw chicken wings that I wanted to buy. As I was waiting the elderly lady was putting together cold sandwiches without any gloves with the male manager there not saying a thing. I was shocked. So, I continue to wait in line and I watch the same lady putting the sandwiches together stop and move some boxes and then go back to putting the sandwiches together without washing her hands. This was such a concern for me! I was up next the lady asked how may I help you. I replied you can help me by telling me why that lady isn't wearing any gloves. I asked if the store has rules and policies. She seems lost and confused and stuttered and then asked what can I get for you. I will continue to buy from the market but will try my best not to but I surely won't be eating from the deli again. read more

I think the management is doing a great job with this store. Products are priced to be competitive with the monster chains but it's local and feels connected with the community. They have more and more 'green' products but still have conventional grocery store options. It's the size of old grocery stores so it isn't huge and impersonal. Everyone who works there is friendly, helpful and seems happy to be working there. There's enough individuality and character to the employees that it's fun. This is the kind of business we should encourage in Eugene. read more

I like this store. It has improved a lot with the new owner. Prices are better than similar stores. Good organic and natural food selection.

It's a small market which still tries to have enough selection for everyone in the neighborhood which says a lot. But the real difference at Red Apple is the great service. I go in there almost every day and have never had anything but stellar service. All the employees have great attitudes and really seem to be happy in their work. They must be treated well as some have been there at least 15 years. They never let their own conversations get in the way of helping customers. And they treat everyone with respect and friendliness which can be difficult in a neighborhood with so many alcoholic, drug addicted and mentally ill people. read more

The Red Apple is a one of a kind family owned and staffed local grocery store. Can;t find a product? Ask Tad to see is he can order it. Need something new in produce? Ask Tom he'll see what he can do and if the neighborhood likes the item, consider it added to your shopping list. Need help finding something? Everyone can tell you where it is or if it is not in stock. Talk about meeting the needs of the community? Where else can you get food delivered for free if you live in the neighborhood? Also, they will try and find the best value for your dollar. Don't come expecting to rip them off, they will chase you down. They are honest folks earning an honest wage providing honest products. When they mark down their veges and fruits, grab them quick cause they are priced to use now and use them you will. I LOVE my Red Apple!!! read more

My experience in this store was awful. Clerk was rude when I asked what aisle I might find an electrical extension cord on, and he said they didn't carry them. I then asked if he knew of a store nearby that would carry one, and he said he didn't. So, not giving up, I wandered around the store some more and found one. The guy ticked me off so much, that I asked to see the manager, and when I told him what happened, he offered no apology. After I checked out, I took the cord over to the clerk and said, "it looks like you carried them after all" and he all he did was grunt and say yeah the manager told me that. My previous review from 2011 got automatically filtered - you never know why. But I still like this store and want my review to be included. I do live pretty nearby and I like the way this store tries to serve its neighborhood. There is a diverse clientele - and for the scruffier end of the range I would note that scruffy doesn't equal criminal. Sometimes I look pretty scruffy when I run over there. It's not a fancy new store - and old doesn't mean dirty. It is, in fact, clean. A lot cleaner, by the way, than when it was a Safeway. The meat department still has Draper Valley chicken available at the best regular prices in town - that's a plus since the only other place to get it is Market of Choice. There are some different butchers now, but they are still helpful and really do cut up meat there, unlike the big chain stores. You can always ask for what you want or order by phone. The best place to get chicken parts for soup if you don't have enough in your freezer. I have always found the staff to be helpful. There's a good aisle of health/organic groceries, a pretty good selection of Latino foods, and the standard groceries. It's a good neighborhood grocery. read more
