Goheen Piano - At our son's wedding!

Goheen Piano

I have been searching for a piano for about a year. After a lot of research I decided on my…read moreoptimal choice and then went about searching for it. I called every piano shop and tuner from Colorado Springs to Fort Collins and in between. I also reached out to shops in Michigan and Atlanta. Each call made me feel I was never going to find what I wanted. .. "Hard to come buy, hard to find in good condition, will be an arm and a leg to move and tune." Finally I stumbled on an ad on Craigslist for two piano's (neither my first choice, but close). They were both Goheen Piano's. When I called, I was told that there were a couple of appointments scheduled that afternoon and they would let me know if either were available after the appointments. Both were sold that day. But Fred was awesome. He talked to me about what I was looking for and said he would put my name down and if he came up with anything in the next several weeks he would call. That was a Thursday...he called me on Saturday and had my dream piano. You can say it was luck...but I could tell it was the relationships he had built with his customer base. We went the next day to look at it and bought it on the spot. Fred and his son delivered it that day (as Sunday mind you). If you want an honest transaction with a highly skilled pianist and piano technician and absolutely no pressure, ...look no further. I highly recommend Fred and Goheen Pianos, without reservation."

Absolutely DO NOT hire "Pianos for Humanity" or anyone associated with "Jay" for any piano-related…read moreservices. This was, without a doubt, the worst experience I've ever had with any service provider, and it resulted in significant damage to both my home and a beautiful vintage instrument. I acquired a 64-year-old Yamaha piano from FB and foolishly contacted Pianos for Humanity for moving, cleaning, and tuning, based on a $600 quote. What I got was a complete and utter disaster. "Professional" is the last word I would use to describe this operation. It was essentially one mover plus Jay, who is not a mover, with a truck, and zero expertise. The first red flag should have been when they asked me to help move the piano. Then, Jay had the audacity to ask me to call my friends to find another person to assist! This was during a workday, so obviously, I couldn't find anyone. Despite sending photos of my narrow staircase in advance, upon arrival, Jay put on an act and suggested I just give him the Yamaha and take one of his smaller spinets instead! This should have been my cue to cancel everything, but I unfortunately I didn't. The "move" itself was a horrifying display of incompetence. I nearly got crushed between the piano and the wall due to their complete lack of technique. The result? A hole punched in my wall, gouges all over my stairwell walls, and the once pristine Yamaha now bears numerous scratches and chips. They also scratched my hardwood floors from dragging the metal piano wheels, stained my white baseboards beige after dropping a wood stain bottle, and then, to add insult to injury, slicked up my floor with WD-40 leaking from his bag! And for this carnage, they still had the nerve to charge me the full $600! "Jay" calls himself "the piano man," but he demonstrated zero respect for this beautiful piece of history. He is hostile, unprofessional, and utterly clueless about proper piano handling. Please, please, PLEASE avoid "Pianos for Humanity" and "Jay" at all costs. Even if you're considering buying a piano from him, I implore you to hire a reputable, professional moving company. I doubt he would show any regards for the instruments once a sale is made. This experience was a nightmare from start to finish, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

He had excellent ratings and I paid more because of his ratings and because I wanted to support a small business in our community. My recent move has been a nightmare. I had numerous issues, but the most troubling is damage to almost every piece of my new furniture that was moved. One end table was completely destroyed and Juan took ownership of that damage and he also took ownership for 2 chips on a very expensive nightstand. So far, I have discovered damage to 4 pieces of furniture and I still cannot get to my other furniture, unfortunately, I expect to see more damage. Yesterday, I contacted him to discuss a resolution and he turned the narrative around and put the blame on me, of course saying that all of the damage was pre-existing, even though everything is brand new, has never been moved before and I offered to provide my receipts showing this. He then told me to do "what I had to do", even as his website states " We're here to serve you and we guarantee your satisfaction." He had a new, inexperienced, very young employee and I definitely think that had much to do with the damage. Several times I saw both Juan and the other mover showing him the proper way to move things. I hold Juan responsible, as a new employee should be properly trained and qualified before they move a household of a person's valuable and sentimental items.

Wouldn't have been any big deal except the interaction on the phone asking the tech about it felt defensive, like he felt I was accusing him, which I wasn't. Then I got to the store and asked the guy at checkout and got the same feeling. Like my statement about not getting a text was an unreasonable point. Anyway, an awkward interaction, BUT I got it, and all is good. I think it's best when dealing with customers to just try hard to assume best intentions. I somehow ended up feeling defensive by just commenting that I didn't get a text. Like "why didn't I get a text?" That's innocent, right? I think so. In their position I would have said "I'm really sorry about that. We sent a text, and it didn't go through. I hope it wasn't too much inconvenience." Boom, done. Anyway, this all seems so silly as I'm saying it, but it's honestly annoying to feel like I'm a problem when I don't think I did anything wrong. There are a lot of options out there, and customer service is quite important to me. In fact, I'd spend more for it. It's a niggle, but its important to me to feel welcomed.
