Kavanagh's is a real local's pub. Good craic and great conversations on any night of the week, but…read morenot quite the place to head if you're up for a rip-snorting jolly old time dancing on tabletops. Get to know the barflies of the Marino/Fairview area over a pint or two of the dark stuff (heaven forbid you order wine in this establishment, it's not the done thing! Believe me, I've tried and was severely berated for it!) They also have an ever changing assortment of Irish pub meals... try the salmon or the Irish stew, made with 'real' Irish beef. The bar tenders are very observant and will remember every drink you've ever ordered in the place. And that is a warning. Kavanagh's is generally a bit of an old man's and tradies' kinda pub, but due to its proximity to Drumcondra is always busy before a match at Croker. Pop in for a pint if you happen to be in the area.

There is the Lounge, which serves food, and is more comfortable, and the Bar, which has a number of TV's, including a very large projector, with all of them showing sports. Sports bars are not my thang (yip, purposely spelt that way), so I use to go the lounge quite a lot (lived around the corner from Kavanaghs for a year). There was always a good atmosphere, and very good service. Had some great chats, and made some friends there too. Not a young crowd, although saying that, there were often groups of late 20's/30 somethings in for a few drinks or glasses of wine (they have a decent wine menu btw). There is also a bus stop very close by, with about 6 buses passing by, all going into town along the Malahide road, so as a spot for a quite drink before a night out, it's very good. Not much sunlight makes it into the building, so I would not propose it as a sunny day spot... dark winter nights, perfect:-)

We had dinner at Murrays Bar twice during our 2 short stays in Dublin. This place was definitely…read moreone of our favorites. And it was located only a few blocks from our first hotel. We were seated up front (on the right side) both times and enjoyed the relative solitude within a very popular restaurant, bar, and music venue. Music was playing in the other room, but piped in for easy listening. I enjoyed the first night's group (The Auld Brigade), that I purchased one of their CDs as we left. Music on the 2nd Night was not as interesting. I counted at least 3 bars, all smartly stacked with beer handles and bottles of hard liquor. Yet, outside of pints, glasses of wine, and lots of whiskey, Murrays Bar had a hard time with some as simple as Gayle's favorite: Bombay Sapphire Martini Up with Olives. We asked about it a couple of ways and the waiter was certainly game to get her what she wanted, but alas that was not to be per the message from the Bar. So over our 2 dinners, our collective choices (4 of us) were pints of Murphy's Stout, an O'Hara's Pale Ale, a Hop House Beer, Gayle's Chardonnay, and a Whiskey Sour. In the food department, Murray's Fish and Chips might be one of the best we've enjoyed during our trip to Ireland. All 4 of us ordered that on our second visit, while only half of us did son on the first night. I guess I'm the only smashed peas fan, but that's a minor point. Burgers filled out the Menu on our first visit, which were pretty darn good too. Table service was great both nights, with special kudos to the guy trying to with Gayle's failed Martini order. I'm not sure why there was "muscle" at the front door both nights, but I guess the four of us looked harmless.

Well, you'd probably go to Quinn's, along with the rest of Dublin's provincial population. Quinn's is good for a laugh if you head down on a Thursday when all the students from DCU head out there. Prepare to see lots of trainee nurses dancing around their handbags. It's also good on matchdays, when they seemingly manage to squeeze in every single one of the 82,000 fans fresh from Croker. Matchdays aside, it gets quieter on Saturday and Sunday nights, so it's good for a quiet pint or two.

(Sorry, is that too American?) =) Anyway, it wasn't very busy on the Wednesday we happened to show up and it was an easy walk from the hotel. It was still early (around 5-6ish), but I can see the place getting very busy on the weekend nights! My two favorite things (besides the Guinness, obviously) were the dart board (cool points!) and the fact the bar is a Celtic Football supporter (Wahoo! Let's go Bhoys!) I'm sure this would be a great place to watch a game. If we hadn't decided to brave the streets of Glasgow to see the game in person, we would have been at Quinn's for sure! The only thing I wish I could change about this place is that I want a T-shirt! Yeah, that my sound a little tourist-y, but hey, that's what I am. Plus, I wanted to bring one home to my friend, Quinn!

Having booked dinner for 11 people well in advance of our visit, I arrived at 7.04pm on 21st March to find the tables were occupied by a large group of people with their meal in progress. The waitress did not seem surprised, and left quickly to see what could be done. Another waitress came along a few minutes later, advising that they were setting up another area. The manager then arrived and apologised, confirming it was totally their fault and a table would be ready soon. We were then led to two tables that would normally seat 4 on each table. 11 settings were squashed together and when we asked for another little table for more space, a small round table at a lower level arrived, which I refused (it was inserted between the two rectangular tables and did not solve the problem). I pointed to another suitable small table but that was refused, and a few minutes later, while not marked as reserved, it was given to other diners. The head waitress was unfriendly and made no effort to make up for the complete-let down with Fagans ignoring the booking I had carefully planned for my 60th birthday. When I wasn't ready to order wine as I was still upset with our table arrangement, she did not return to follow through on looking after us. The white haired manager was even worse, as he visited the other diners in that area and did not check in on us once in the whole evening to see that the rearrangements were satisfactory. We weren't offered the option of dessert and were not granted as much as one complimentary drink to compensate for ruining my night. Having been a local in Drumcondra for years before I moved to the UK, and my family still living there, I chose Fagans to support local business. The staff who death with my booking seemed very accommodating so I trusted I had made a good choice.

Definitely would recommend if you're in Dublin!
