I had modest expectations for this restaurant, given its simple name and its small-town setting, but those expectations were far exceeded in pretty much every way. For one, the cafe is well-kept and charmingly appointed, with flowers and twinkling lights on its front patio and tin ceilings in its spacious interior. Also, the service is congenial to the point of seeming neighborly -- my wife and I felt right at home, despite being Americans just passing through town. The friendliness deserves extra credit because we showed up 30 minutes before closing, i.e., during that window of time when restaurants are technically open but also frequently staffed by workers who huff and puff at anyone who dares to enter as closing time draws nigh. Regarding the food, I've got nothing but high marks for the fish and chips, which stayed impressively crisp even though we ordered takeout and only started eating back at our hotel. As is common around Nova Scotia, the fries are big and battered, like thicker versions of the dearly departed fries that Burger King sold back in the day. We also got a large kale Caesar salad, which was embellished nicely with a fistful of crunchy spiced chickpeas. The greens ended up being like 50% romaine, but they were fresh and enjoyable. I'll add that the restaurant has a nice selection of nonalcoholic craft beers, which was a pleasant surprise for my wife and me, since we're currently living the teetotaler lifestyle. There aren't a whole lot of places to eat in downtown Antigonish, so we went with Brownstone and crossed our fingers that it would be good. We were pleasantly surprised! They're located off of the main road in downtown and if you arrive after 4pm, you can park at the metered parking for free! Upon entering, we were warmly greeted by a staff member and told to sit wherever we like. It's a medium sized restaurant with two sections and a small bar. The menu is diverse and prices are on par with the other restaurants in the area. I got the soup of the day for $6.95 which was tomato cheddar and it came with a delicious biscuit! For my entree I went with the steamed mussels for $13.95. It was a decent sized portion and I was extremely pleased with both items that I ordered. Hubby got the Mediterranean Chicken Wrap for $15.95 and loved it! They have a diverse cocktail menu filled with local craft beers, wines, spirits, etc. I had a pint of the Butcher Block Red Ale and it was smooth and somewhat bold. The food came out fast and the service was super friendly! I loved how they had the place all decorated with pumpkins and fall leaves. Very festive! The steamed mussels were the best I had on my Maritimes trip - the white wine sauce flavor and its umami was fully infused into the meat, and the sauce itself was light enough to drink as a broth. I've not the biggest fan of Greek food (don't @ me) but the chicken souvlaki had a well-balanced mix of spices in addition to being tender and juicy. Maritimes lobster just hits different and the lobster itself provided the pasta with much of its sweet, salty and ocean breeze flavor that paired well with the light cream sauce. We stopped here for lunch in the middle of a five hour drive. In short, the food was good and the experience was okay. My friend and I each ordered wraps and the side of soup. Our wraps were awesome! Fresh, hearty ingredients true to the menu description. My mediterranean wrap had chunks of chicken breast, olives, feta, lettuce, onion, greek dressing, etc. Delicious and a great proportion of filling to wrap (sometimes you order a wrap and there is wayyyy more wrap than you want!) The chili lime chicken soup of the day was so-so. It was tasty but felt...a bit tired. A cilantro sprig to garnish it would have added some freshness in flavor and color at the very least. The atmosphere was okay. We sat in one of the booths, which are lined up in this skinny side room next to the bathroom. We were near the bathroom and heard all of the loud details from within, from loud paper towel dispenser banging to crying children. There was often a line to the bathroom or people coming back multiple times to see if it was free because it seems that this place only has ONE toilet for the entire restaurant! Unfortunate. The service was friendly. It was also somewhat slow. Our wraps took a while to show up and we hunted down our server to ask for the check. We wondered if it was just busy or if our location back near the bathroom boonies made us a somewhat forgettable table. Charming little restaurant that was bustling with locals of all ages even when we arrived in the middle of the afternoon. We ordered a couple of very Nova Scotian-seeming dishes: the lobster spinach dip and the maple bacon poutine. The dip was delicious and came with a whole lot of (well-toasted!) pita bread, which was a perfect accompaniment. We had just enough pita for the dip. The poutine wasn't as big a triumph; it was heavier on the maple syrup than we expected and ended up reading as rather too sweet, although the fries and cheese curds were of good quality. Service was kind of slow, although that wasn't a surprise given the number of customers off peak hours. This would be a good place to stop in if you're in Antigonish and looking for a bite to eat. One of the better restaurants in the area. The portions are quite large and prices are reasonable and affordable. What I am very happy about is their chowder only contains fish. Which is perfect for me because I have an allergy to shell fish and I found that almost all restaurants in this province will serve chowder with lobster/clams/scallops.... so I am unable to order it. The chowder was delicious and was so happy to have a bowl during my trip to Nova Scotia. I also ordered the Braised Haddock and the fish was cooked really well. I even glared at other food coming out of the kitchen and everything looked really good. I wish I had room for dessert. It looked amazing. We enjoyed a nice lunch here on our way from Halifax to Cape Breton Park. This is a university town so there is more to choose from (and several gas stations). This was a pleasant lunch spot that seemed to be well populated with locals-always a good sign. Since we are still on our lobster roll steak, we had lobster rolls with side salads. The roll was the weak link here-rather thick, not buttered and under-toasted. But the lobster salad was fresh and had some red pepper and onion and lettuce. Very filling. We then went to a loca coffee shop that had a nice selection of vegan baked goods. We bought a few to take with us on our hikes tomorrow. Service was great here too! read more

Worth the detour not only to see the Historic St. Xavier Francis college but this wonderful restaurant. I according to Scott, our server, it opened was opened by the owner Joan in November 2012 with the intent of being a Gourmet Burger joint. After some thought it was opened as a "Mediterranean Comfort Food" concept. The menu has a variety of healthy options but also contains some local bites. The fish and chips are fresh and very generously portioned and you can option sweet potato fries for only a dollar more. The black bean burger (hand made) was very flavorful and the texture kept it together even when I shared half with my girlfriend. Having eaten around town this place earns my pick in town. read more

It's our first time in Antigonish and we wanted to avoid the fast food chains, so we relied on the 'restaurants near me' feature on Google maps. This place has a good selection of dishes at a modest price, so we thought we'd give it a try So glad we did! All three of had delicious meals. My granddaughter had the chicken and sausage penne with garlic bread. My daughter had pad Thai, and I had pan-fried haddock with mixed vegetables and mashed potatoes. My fish was so fresh and delicately cooked, and I was happy to see that the'vegetable medley' wasn't the usual tasteless frozen mix. The medley included carrots , snow peas, broccoli, and turnip, perfectly done. (I wish I could cook broccoli like this at home!) Amazing that a menu this varied could be so consistently good. I was also tempted by the chicken tikka masala. Alas our time here is short, so that will have to wait for another day. Our server, Jessica, was excellent -- friendly and efficient. I was gonna give this place a 4 star but the service in end was just terrible. Our waitress Mel was amazing, it was actually another waitress that destroyed it all today. One waitress had knocked over the glass on the empty table right beside us, she did not ask us if we were okay or got spilled on (which we did). She quickly swept the floor, and I saw some reflections on the ground. I figured it's best I tell her, so no one would get hurt after. She left to dispose of the glass, another waitress came. I told her she may want to sweep the floor again. She said the other waitress already did. Then she contradicted herself right away but saying she just stepped on a piece.
