Brown's Beach house is located within the Fairmont Orchid hotel resort. I would recommend booking at least a day in advance because slots fill up quickly. They do take walk-up reservations, but the wait is usually a couple of hours. If you're dining for a special occasion, you can note it on your reservation. I would recommend choosing a time window around sunset because the sky is very beautiful and definitely romantic! Our spectacular server was Bruce. He was super kind and helpful--checking in on us often throughout dinner & dessert. You can check out my photos for what we ordered. Everything was absolutely incredible - we'd order every item again. I did, however, forget to take a picture of the Ube rolls (first round complimentary). They were so unique and had great textures. I wish I could make these at home! For dessert, I thought the tiramisu was a little dry, but my husband enjoyed the whole thing. Their version of the Snickers bar was totally delicious, even better than the actual candy bar) and complimentary (since we were celebrating our anniversary - how sweet!) It's definitely a more pricey dining experience, but it is an absolute must do if you are staying at or around the hotel. We are really glad that we went here on our last night.

Came for a sunset dinner. Beautiful views. Service was amazing. We enjoyed everything we ate. Ube bread- yum! Watermelon poke - fun way to try watermelon differently, has a slight kick Scallops - delicious, would have been nice to get 3 instead of 2 for the price. Coconut red curry lobster bisque - i enjoyed it, subtle red curry flavor Ribeye- cant go work with steak Ti Leaf Wrapped Kanpachi - I really enjoyed, it was interesting with the coconut cream Panna cotta - beautiful flavors but the panna cotta wasn't fully set Hawaiian snickers bar - 100% recommend getting if you enjoy chocolate.

Ocean front dining at it's best. Beautiful beachside restaurant with Hawaiian musicians serenading you while enjoying a delightful dinner. Janice was warm and attentive making every moment special. We celebrated a special birthday. Notable dishes include jumbo prawns with foie gras and the yummiest ube rolls!

Amazing experience! Staff, food, and Ambiance were 5 stars. To start off we were seated at the outer edge of the restaurant near the water and we were able to see the sunset - ambiance was off the roof. The food selection were great from the vegetarian (Kalo Fondant), to the Mahi mahi to the filet mignon. Let's not forget about the "Ube" rolls. The desserts was great and my favorite would be the chocolate dessert of the evening. The staff were incredible and this tops off a great evening! Definitely a great place to have dinner with family and friends.

This is a beautiful restaurant at one of the most fabulous resorts that I have ever been to, but the food is just average. The drinks are fine and the complimentary ube bread with honey butter is terrific. We tried four different mains: Ti Leaf Wrapped Kanpachi (ok), Kona Prawns (overcooked), Mahi Mahi (best of what we tried), and Special Ono (not great). This is a very expensive meal that does not live up to the experience of the hotel.

What a superb experience for our wedding anniversary! If you have a big event to celebrate while in this area of the Big Island, please consider Brown's. It was a small hike to get out to this restaurant from the lobby of the Fairmont Hotel, but it was worth it to be on the beach for the amazing sunset. I shared about our anniversary online when making the reservation, and they gave us the best table in the place-IMO, so close to the beach and only a few tables in this section. We both got fish--he got Mahi Mahi, I got Ono. Both excellent but i liked his macadamia crusted Mahi the best. And the lobster fried rice had a great smokey flavor that sets it apart from your everyday Hawaiian side dish. Excellent presentation of food from the purple sweet potato bread, to the salad, the entrees, and the desserts. Try the tiramisu and the snickers dessert. Service was wonderful! There was even a sunset ritual performed with a horn! And the sun setting was the perfect backdrop (6 pm reservations in July is perfect timing). We had a magical time and will be back!

I came here for dinner and the ambience and location with the view is absolutely amazing. They also have soft life music outside creating a great ambience. The service is also excellent and our server did an excellent job of walking us through the menu. However, I will say for the price, the portion of food is very very small. Pictured is my pasta that was an appetizer amount of food.

What a beautiful spot! Celebrated the wife's birthday with a sunset meal. Delicious foods; love their fish with jasmine rice. Favorite was definitely the ube bread!

4.5 We went here on our last night of our honeymoon and it was a great choice. While pricey, the ambiance and food were phenomenal. There was a great musician playing, and being seated outside near the ocean made it feel romantic. We loved all of our food, and received a complimentary dessert-- no idea what it actually was, but it was very tasty. Our waitress, Summer, was super fun and we really enjoyed talking with her. I would definitely recommend for Fairmont guests (and others coming from other resorts)!

At the new bar first, this was sparkling sake.

Because I did not plan ahead as much as usual, the earliest reservation I could get was 6pm on a Sunday. We were thee for sunset but in the middle of our appetizer so we did not get another photo like we usually do. And we were in the middle of the tables instead of on the seaside edge. There is a new menu, "Brown's Experience" which is prix fixe. It's $110 for an appetizer, entree, and dessert. Add wine pairings for $65. We both got the scallop appetizer and the filet mignon. The other entree choice was the crusted kampachi. The scallop appetizer was good, although we each got two regular sized scallops instead of one large one. They were perfectly seared and nicely plated with sauce nd vegetables. Care had been taken with the sauce so as not to ruin the sear. I really liked this! The filet mignon is always tricky with me because I like it VERY rare. I emphasize this when ordering, asking for black and blue, saying moo. But the first one came out medium. The plating is dramatic with one huge onion ring, but I sent it back before I could snap a shot. The chef came out to do a routine check and was surprised to see that I no longer had my steak! He went back to oversee the refire but it came out probably by the time he got back to the kitchen. The second try was perfect, although the plating was a little sloppy. Scrumptious, everything a filet should be. The grilled broccolini was a little bitter. The potatoes were perfection, creamy and subtly flavored with truffle I think. Hubby cleaned his plate. The dessert snickers was good, chocolate with nougat and Mac nuts. Some nice crispies and some fruity filling. I really liked the port that was paired. Service was prompt and attentive. The returned steak was handled very promptly. She also let me try the paired wines before pouring the glass and offered substitutions if anything was not to my taste. 6 oz. pours. The maitre d' came out to check on us after dessert, just before the check was delivered. Our bill included a full, extra $110 meal! I called him back and he handled promptly including comp'ing a pre-dinner wine. The waitress rushed over and I asked if she had checked our bill but the Maitre was already taking the tray to fix it. We have been here enough times, that I give the benefit of the doubt, but check your bill for any extra dishes or drinks just in case! Great food and service. Not perfection, but worth the 45 minute drive from Kailua. Note: I noticed people were dressed mostly very casually. Probably those were hotel guests who didn't want to change, but for food this good I like to live a little and dress up a bit.

Stunning restaurant at the Fairmont Orchid overlooking the rocky private beach. Service was friendly and attentive. The complimentary bread basket consists of warm mini ube bread rolls which were heavenly! Mac crusted mahi mahi was more of a thick filet with a light crust on the top - not your typical nut crusted fish- but delicious nonetheless. The filet with grilled broccolini was also tasty. The live music and sunset really set the ambiance. Amazing experience.

For the main, I ordered their fish sandwich, which came with swordfish as the catch of the day. The tartar sauce had a nice tang and just a hint of spice that really made the flavor shine. Would definitely recommend visiting!

We went during sunset and it was sooooo beautiful. We ordered: * the 3 dips - loved their muhammara!! Plus the bread is so squishy and soft it absorbs the flavors of the dips so well * burrata salad - very refreshing and well seasoned. I believe it's peach or melon served with it, a very nice touch * grilled octopus - loved the tomato(?) sauce it was served with, and the way they grilled was perfection. Reminded me of the octopus I'd have in Kerekennah, a small island off the coast of Tunisia. Fresh & well seasoned. * Cacio e pepe + chicken: really appreciated how they noticed my husband and I were sharing everything, so they had split the pasta into two bowls. Deliciously made, with it had a bit more sauce tho and that the chicken wasnt so dry. * inside out smores: YUMMY. loved the combo of the graham cracker ice cream with the roasted marshmallow and chocolate sauce + inside the marshmelllw too. In all we spent $190 for 2 people including tax and tip (no drinks). Sure a bit on the pricier side, but we had been spending $90-110 for very average or not even good meals across Hawaii anyways, so didn't seem too bad. Parking is free! We saw from Yelp photos that Canoe House offered a tasting menu at some point in time, but during our visit, it was more of an impromptu tasting menu of sorts -- created by our server, rather than an official one with a set beverage pairing. In any case, we still had a wonderful experience ordering items a la carte. Before diving into the food, I wanted to call out the outstanding service at Canoe House. My wife and I were celebrating our anniversary and our server started and ended the meal with a round of congratulations. Throughout our meal, our server was super attentive and there was never a moment when our water cups were empty. Empty plates were promptly cleared, cutlery was refreshed when it was needed, and whenever a dish was brought over, he would carefully slide things around on the table so dishes were accessible and not overcrowding. Friendly, professional service of this level is honestly hard to find these days outside of Michelin dining establishments. My wife and I started our meal off with the large loaf of pull-apart milk bread ($18). The milk bread was incredibly fluffy and the outside was finished with some honey and sea salt. The sweet cream butter was rich and had the perfect spreadable consistency. As tempting as it is to want to finish the loaf, you'll definitely want to safe your stomach for the rest of the meal. The next items that we ordered were two chilled oysters ($7/piece), and a hamachi + uni citrus salad ($14). Since we were dining as a couple, our server informed us that we could actually order half-portions of some of the dishes. This was a perfect way to not fill-up before our mains arrived, so we did that for both the salad and the gyozas. The uni in the salad was melt in your mouth tender and had a delicious sweetness to it. I thought the hamachi in the salad was a bit unremarkable: it was certainly fresh and there were two generously sized pieces in the dish, but the fish definitely needed a bit more salt to it. Our next and last appetizer to arrive was the beef and foie gras gyoza ($7/piece). The chili garlic ponzu sauce the gyoza is resting leans towards the sour side, but that's my personal preference when it comes to dumpling sauces so I really enjoyed it. The filling inside the gyoza was on the leaner side compared to your typical pork and cabbage dumpling, but I didn't mind this too much since there was so much sauce in the bowl to accommodate the dumpling. The next four items we ordered all arrived together: the garlic fried rice ($32), the Kona kanpachi ($67), the Iberico char siu pork ($65), and the side of sugar snap peas ($22). Of these items, my favorite bites were the Iberico pork followed closely by the garlic fried rice and the sugar snap peas. If we could've ordered one fewer dish, it definitely would have been the Kona kanpachi. While the fish was flakey tender and the the skin was cooked to be perfectly crunchy, the portion size was far too large for two, and I thought the coconut ginger sauce felt a bit diluted and not as flavorful as advertised. I wish our server warned us that we had ordered way too much food, because we brought 85% of this dish home as leftovers. While I don't necessarily mind having leftovers, having leftovers on vacation -- with less than ideal heating methods available (i.e. hotel microwave), is not great. Overall, I couldn't help but feel this dish was somewhat a waste of money for the two of us. On the other hand, the Iberico char siu is a dish I'd order again and again if I were to come back. The pork was lean and grilled to perfection. The charred end pieces were some of my favorite bites of the night. I didn't miss the fatty bits that are typically present on a piece of char siu pork, and the mustard that accompanied the dish was not over the top spicy like some of the mustards you find at dim sum restaurants. The garlic fried rice was packed with so much garlic flavor. One criticism I had with the dish though is I wish the hot sizzling plate the dish was served on was even hotter. The rice that was in contact with the plate didn't crisp up in the same way that it would with a Korean bibimbap served in a hot stone bowl, or the socarrat at the bottom of a Spanish paella. Nonetheless, the dish was well-seasoned. If you want to save a bit on carbs and not fill up, you might want to skip this dish. Overall, the dining under the stars experience at Canoe House is hard to beat. The service is incredible, the included validated valet parking experience is seamless, the ambience of the hotel where the restaurant is located is breathtaking, and Chef Rhoda has really done an wonderful job with the vast majority of the items we tried. I would not hesitate to recommend Canoe House for celebrating a special occasion if you're visiting Hawaiʻi.
