I enjoyed the quaint local atmosphere in Brownes, the service was pleasant, and the tea was grand. I ordered vegetable quiche, and it came with a side salad and pickled cabbage. The quiche was good, they give you a large portion of quiche, however the crust was very thin. The server was very nice, and they do a lot of their own baking. A group of eight us were in Dublin on business the week of March 21st and a colleague recommended we have dinner here. During the day it's a coffee shop but in the evenings its French bistro. I've lived in France for 4 years and have an affinity for French food. While I'm not a gastronomic expert, I think I have a fair palate and will say that Brownes does a very nice job. Our party was large enough that I could get a good broad perspective on their food. Each of us ordered a different meal and were very pleased with our food. Appetizers ordered included the duck confit, chicken pate, vegetable soup, and goat cheese salad. All looked very good and I personally found the pate to be delicious. Main courses included the bouef borgunion, pork chop, burger, seafood combination, and chicken special. The portions were of good size and we found the Sharaz wine we ordered to be very good. I would recommend coming here, the manager is French, very friendly and welcoming as is his staff. read more

I know that people rave about this spot, as a lot of the previous reviews testify - but I just don't get the hysteria. Perhaps I ordered the wrong dish. I got the vegetable wrap which consisted of hummus, black olives, tomatoes, a load of lettuce and then more lettuce on the side. I had two coffees or americanos as has been corrected to me too many times in Dublin. I loved the earthenware pottery that they were served in. My companion got scrambled eggs and toast which looked rather poorly to me. Service was disorganised and very slow. My lunch companion had to gesture at the server for attention - I assure you the gesture was civilised. It took 20 mins to get served, my lunch companion assured me that that is exceptional. Again at the end it took too long to get the check so we walked to the till. The bill for my two coffees, sorry americanos, and wrap came to just over €14, I winced a little. Servers were very nice and chatty, which really makes the difference but they need a better system. The line of people out the door would lead you to believe that the food in there is great but a lot of me thinks it's because they have the monopoly on eateries in Sandymount. But having said that I will try again and a different dish but after today I am not sure what all the fuss is about. read more

Met some locally based friends for breakfast. The place is a bit basic in terms of comfort and amenities but adequate. I don't think I'd be looking to settle in for a long languid dinner somehow. The coffee was good, the omelette pretty decent and the bacon sarnie was pretty much as you'd make it at home. Plenty of rashers, a couple of slices of white bread and bosh, bosh! Not bad. read more

You could say that Brown's, in the very beating heart of true blue, Leinster supporting , frappuccino sipping Dublin 4, is nowt but a posher version of Café Java across the green. To give it the credit it deserves its actually a great little café and has much more atmosphere, they'd probably prefer bistro. As well as the standard issue, coffee's, tea's, wraps, soups(very good soups) they have a big selection of cakes, should you be in a confectionery buying humour. The staff are all very friendly and efficient, was there in the prime time of the café world, the lunch shirt, the place was hopping too. Worth a look. Like a superhero Browns has a double identity but thankfully fails to wear its undies on the outside of the shop. By day it is a mild mannered deli catering to the local offices and ladies who lunch, by night it is the caped French bistro ...ish, sort of thing, I could take the analogy further but no one wants that. The evening menu is a short and straight forward affair offering really nice simple dishes at reasonably good prices, there is also a set menu which we went for - it offers either a starter and main or main and desert for around 21 Euro, considering the mains include a very nice entrecôte steak and the starters include a very passable pate I think it is very good value indeed! On wine: they have a good wine list on offer but also permit you to bring you r own and charge a corkage fee - about 8Euro if memory serves. In all I like Browns, the atmosphere could do with a tweeking but I think that has mostly to do with the lighting being a little off (too bright me thinks). The service is great and staff are friendly, deffo worth a visit. read more

I had been here once before, but went here over the weekend to catch up with a friend living out of town over brunch. Beware, on the weekends, this place fills up QUICK. The staff were very friendly and accommodating (considering we had about 6 people at our table. I ordered a cappuccino and eggs benedict. The food came out quickly, and was quite tasty. If you're looking to eat healthy, they have several healthy breakfast options there for you. All in all, nice little spot in sandymount to grab lunch/brunch. They serve dinner as well, but I've never tried their dinner. The only downside was that my drink and breakfast came to 11 euros. A little bit more than I prefer to pay, but it was still tasty. read more

Something keeps drawing me back to Brownes whenever I'm in the Sandymount area. However after this time, I'm not sure I'll be rushing back. I've always come here at lunch time on a Saturday so it's generally crowded and really loud. Think hopping disco bar of a Saturday night kind of loud. It might be okay if you've had a few drinks and don't mind shouting over your scrambled eggs but if you want to catch up with a friend, avoid. My friend and I always politely scan the menu before ordering our trusty favourite (scrambled eggs with spinach and Gruyère cheese on granary toast) with a soy latte. Disappointingly, this time they had run out of spinach but it was still tasty and one of the cheapest options at €6.95. Quite frankly, we were relieved to get out of the place. Having said that, I'm still a fan of the food, coffee and decor. If I ever find myself in Sandymount on a weekday, I'll give it another chance. read more

We had dinner here last weekend. We went in without reservations at about 9.30 and were seated immediately. The restaurant is busy, and sound carries, so it was quite loud. The food was lovely. I had the crab to start - lots of real crab meat which was a nice surprise. The boeuf bourginon was delicious as well. Service was a little brusque, and not terribly friendly, but we didn't mind. We'll be back to try it again. (I decided to up this to a 4 star review after my bf reminded me of the amazing burger he had - perfectly cooked (medium-rare) and juicy. He even said he regretted putting ketchup on it as the flavour of the burger was so good. A really good burger is hard to find in Dublin, so it deserves another star :) ) read more

Went back for another dinner and I have to say that I love this place, but what I love most about it isn't the food as much as the feel. The atmosphere is pitch perfect(if they had a fire place, I would never leave). Despite service which occassionaly has too much in common with a Franco-Irish Fawlty Towers, the staff and atmosphere is incredibly welcoming and pleasant. As for the food, I had an oversalted and slightly overcooked mussel app, followed by a delicious rack of lamb with equally good white beans. They have redeemed themselves. More than two years ago, we went to Brownes for breakfast and the service was so bad we never returned. But after being convinced to give them.a second chance recently, Inwas pleasantly surprised by their warm staff. Ive now gone back several.times and pleased ronhave another local breakfast option. I have never had less than a great meal in Browne's, and I have been back several times since my first review. My wife is a big fan too. Honestly, we are usually torn between going back to re-sample an old favorite (the beef bourguignon is so good, as is just about everything else) and trying out another dish to see if it matches the others. The service - which usually only has issues because of the sheer amount of people in the place - and occasional loudness knock a star off, but the quality of the the food makes up for it. Also if you do get a less busy night there are no such problems. The wine selection, though small is generally excellent too. Brownes is always high on our list of places to go - good idea to have a back up if you don't have a reservation though - it can be very, very busy. read more

A lovely breakfast/brunch place in Sandymount. It's very busy on the weekends and the restaurant itself gets pretty noisy, but nevertheless it's a good atmosphere. The food is nice -- I wouldn't say it's out of this world but it's very tasty for sure. I had the eggs benedict which was good, but for about 8 euro I was expecting a small side or something to come with the dish but it was just the eggs. Still, I'd highly recommend Brownes if you're in the area as it's a nice spot. If the weather permits, walk to the beach afterwards! read more

Brownes have up'd their game on the coffee! New guy behind the machine and he makes a tip top morning cup of Joe! Sandwiches are consistently good as well......and consistently priced. Was here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. It's a busy spot but comfortable seating. I ordered a chicken ciabatta. The service was fair but when my food arrived, one side of the ciabatta was cold! Years back, Brownes used to be the only cafe in Sandymount. The prices were always higher than average but it was the obvious choice for lunch when the only alternative was sausages and chips or a soggy ham sanger from Ryan's pub on the other side of the Green. The decor is cosy with wooden chairs and tables, and local artwork adorning the walls. The tables are packed in, with the emphasis on atmosphere rather than privacy. In the evening, the restaurant is lit by nightlights and looks quite romantic. They had and still have an expansive brunch/lunch menu offering everything from full-Irish fry-ups to panini, salads and wraps. The quality is pretty good, though they seem to use ready-made sauces which lets the side down considerably, and the portions can be a little on the small side, especially for the cakes and desserts. In the last few years, Brownes has begun to open in the evenings, offering French inspired dishes like mules mariniere, which comes as a starter or main course. They are offering a special €20 evening menu which includes a starter, main and glass of wine, which is a huge saving on the a-la-carte prices. read more

From my previous review, you can see I was in love with Brownes but I have been there a few times since and it keeps getting worse. Last Sunday was my last visit to Brownes. It was so disorgansied, the waiting staff were so rude, the food was so bland, I was told my bacon for my pancakes were made in the microwave, that put me off for life. read more

Excellent spot for a casual bit of breakfast or brunch on the weekend. I can agree with other reviews saying that the food is not out of this world but definitely very tasty and good value for money at the end of the day. I can recommend the egg white and ham with Gruyere cheese highly, the ham and cheese is also the ideal comfort food for a hungover sunday morning. Pancakes with cream and berries were lovely too. But I must say I wasn't blown away by the coffee, which I had unrealistically bright expectations for. Lively spot for some good food at a decent price. read more

I really like the food here (largely bistro/cafe fare) and am thinking about going there to eat right now, but am a little reticent. This place is tremendously popular, particularly on the weekends, and especially in nice weather when people sit outside (stake out your outdoor table early), and that leads to...it being really loud and the service being extremely uneven. The waitstaff were accommodating and polite, but seemed very harried and rushed, and didn't quite get the order right. And then it took quite a while to get our food - maybe the kitchen isn't big enough for the size of their menu. I don't think Browne's should really do anything different, it just means that there's not enough competition for the lunch crowd looking for the kind of food and ambience Browne's offers. My friend and I had brunch here recently and I really enjoyed it. They don't take reservations, but the space inside is much larger than it appears from the outside. We waited for about 10-15 minutes for a table during peak brunching hours. There is also a take away counter if you don't feel like sitting in. The service was attentive, a bit hurried though, which is to be expected when it's as busy as it was. Firstly, my latte was delicious! I was a bit boring for my food order and had scrambled eggs, sausage, and white toast- but it was delicious. It was prepared well and reminded me of a diner breakfast I could get back home in the States. The sausage was especially good- not too greasy at all. My friend had the Eggs Benedict- the portion size was perfect and she really enjoyed it. Her daughter had some fresh juice and that was also delicious. After having a very refreshing, brisk walk along Sandymount beach with my sister in law on this lovely Spring day, we headed back towards Sandymount Green to Brownes Restaurant for a light lunch. Both of us ordered their special deal of the day, bowl of homemade tomato soup with any sandwich, wrap or ciabatta of choice on the menu, with a few exceptions. The service was very efficient, with pleasant staff and the place was very busy with lunch-time diners plus other casual diners like ourselves. Our sandwiches and wraps were delicious and freshly made as was the soup which was really thick and definitely homemade, however, as I was half way through mine I encountered an 'alien object' which looked like a small chicken bone. Having left the said alien on my plate I continued to carefully sip my soup but only to encounter yet another - what looked to me like a small chicken bone! I reported this to the waiter who notified the owner/manager, who, in turn, promptly came our table and apologised profusely, and informed me what I found in my soup were actually the end 'twiggy' bits of thyme sticks which should not have been blended with the soup! To me they appeared to be more like chicken bones as they were quite sharp and hard, but I did not argue with him as he was quite generous, under the circumstances, giving us both a cup of coffee and did not charge us for the lunch - probably to be expected, but all-in-all, we did enjoy our lunch and will probably go back again - maybe have coffee next time instead of soup just to be on the safe side! read more

I was so excited to go to Brownes after reading a highlight in a book about where chefs recommend to eat in Dublin. We went this morning, and the place was busy...cozy, warm with newspapers scattered about for the customers to read while they linger over their coffee and tea. My husband ordered the Veggie breakfast, eggs, sautéed mushrooms and tomatoes, with baked beans and toast while I fancied scrambled eggs, bacon and a scone substitute for the toast. I asked the waitress to please make my eggs very dry, not runny and she said ok, will order them well done for you. My husband enjoyed a lovely, large cup of Americano and I loved my pot of tea while waiting for our breakfast. Unfortunately, when my eggs came out, there was no way I could eat them...they were hardly cooked let alone scrambled. They were runny, gooey, and slid all over as well as off the plate. My scone was not really a scone, but a muffin type, doughy biscuit that was just not very good. My husband ate his eggs, which were also quite runny, but he ate them nonetheless, unfortunately, I just couldn't and although Brownes was bustling with customers both eating in and taking away, we will not be returning any time soon. Another disappointing visit to Brownes today Saturday 25/8/12 very arrogantly decided there was no more all day breakfast being served at 2.40 pm even though place was not full and no wonder.Nothing from main meals menu which left sandwiches and rolls. Waited for 20 minutes and watched as she seated group after group who came later. When I asked about it she babbled on first claiming that I left (blamed me), then saying she didn't have a table for us (my accent maybe?) then said she forgot and finally said that I was too stupid to understand what she was saying. Turns into bistro style restaurant at night. Food lovely but not great for vegetarians and once waited over an hour and a half for food. But pleasant enough atmosphere so didn't mind too much.
