A brewery by a classic windmill! What is not to like. Beers were tasty. Also got the food platter and bitterballen. Fast service. Can sit outside too.
Google led us to Brouwerij't IJ on a recent rip to Amsterdam, and I am so glad that it did! This spot is super cool with a chill ambiance and TONS of beer to choose from. We truly could have spent the whole day here if we had the time! Their staff was very helpful and assisted us in understanding the menu and making selections. We loved the beer and saw lots of snacks coming out that looked super good! Definitely make the stop - it's awesome here!
What a gem! We came here on a hot summer day and it was so busy. The service is quick and painless. There's one line for beer and there's one line for food. We grabbed a seat inside (first come first serve for both indoor and outdoor) and opted for the beer flight + cheese board with sausage. The beer flight was great! I really enjoyed most of the beers featured in it. My favorite was the blondie. The cheese was so yummy and honestly the sausage was my favorite.
Is there anything more quintessentially Dutch than having a beer in a windmill? We came to Brouwerij 't IJ twice during our stay in Amsterdam. We found the walk pleasant and the beer tasty. I was big big fan of their Victoria's Secret Pale Ale. During our first visit, we planned to order a flight - but apparently flights are only served before 5pm, and it was almost 6pm. They do, however, offer smaller pours. One of my favorite things about beer in Europe in general is their standard pour is smaller than the standard American pour. Thus, you get to try more! We paired our pours with a snack platter - the perfect arrangement of pickles, cheese, meat, and bread. My only complaint was seeing how many unfinished snack boards were being thrown away! We didn't have any issues destroying ours - I was an especially big fan of the warm sausage. If it's nice, the outside space is packed. If it's rainy, the inside is packed. Either way, it was busy during both visits, but we managed to snag the same two bar stools each time. Just be prepared to be patient if you're coming with a large group. I LOVE their ostrich mascot and their array of merch. You see Brouwerij 't IJ advertised all over, even outside of Amsterdam, so I was a happy patron to visit twice.

We came here just because we saw it had a windmill. Little did we know that we were going on the day they were doing "Oktoberfest." Place became packed really fast! Plenty of outdoor seating too. The beer select was limited this particular day since it was an event. They had a small menu of tapas and charcuterie. They also had a cart/truck making food. Beer was good. It's what you'd expect from a brewery.

The beer was 3.5 a cup and the cheese and sausage was around 7 I think (I don't remember) Yes I would, I like the vibe.
Fantastic brewery located next to one of the eight windmills still left in Amsterdam. Come before 5pm if you're interested in getting a flight, which is a flight of their top five beers. Personally, I feel the flight was expensive as flights generally are, but still worth the experience to try more beers! The boar meat sausage was amazing btw!

The serving Staff were friendly and helpful in making selections. There is in door and outdoor seating; dog friendly. Clean restrooms downstairs. Cash and cards accepted. This was my favorite beer while visiting Amsterdam so I also purchased a sweatshirt- they have merchandise for sale. Try their beer and better yet stop by their brewery!

Craft brewery that was established in the 80s in a former bathhouse. It's next to the amazing DeGooyer Windmill. The tasting room is well appointed and the outdoor patio area is pretty large. They primarily brew organic craft beers leaning towards Belgian influences. The beers we had were spectacular. Far superior than anything I've had in America and we've got some darn good breweries. My favorite is the Zatte Tripel. The food offerings were perfectly European. We shared a board of bread, sausages, cheese, olives, and nuts. Service was fast and friendly. read more

The ambience is nice, with the old windmill and outdoor seating. Indoors, it smelled of old beer, which is to be expected I suppose. We are big fans of IPAs so were happy to see it offered here! We ordered one from the bartender, however it did not really taste like an IPA. It was a bit disappointing with a bitter taste. Perhaps the bartender gave us the wrong beer? We ended up not finishing it and decided to go elsewhere to grab a bite. read more

Very cute brewery! Went on a Friday for the free tour and the girl who presented the tour was so cute and a great storyteller! We got to try their first beer and afterwards we sat inside and got to try some more of their beers! Everyone I tried I enjoyed and everyone that works there is so nice! Highly recommend checking this place out! read more
Brouwerij 't IJ is a very unique brewery, and a must-visit while in Amsterdam. I mean, a brewery + windmill within the city? We traveled via a short tram ride, but I would imagine it would be easy to get there by bike as well. Sadly, we only stayed for a beer each, as it was insanely crowded and difficult to get to the bar, much less even think about finding somewhere to sit. We made the mistake of going on a Saturday late afternoon; I would highly recommend trying a weekday shortly after they open for the day. Our visit was pretty disappointing, although I guess now we can say we've been there. We tried the Columbus Amber and the Tripel. The beers were both nice and clean, although comparable to plenty of other beers we tried on our trip. The food is allegedly good, but we couldn't even see the counter to order some snacks, much less be able to get to it to order. Apparently, they also have some fun swag, but again, we could barely even get in the door to order a beer. If we returned to Amsterdam, I would come back early on a weekday, as I am a little sad we didn't get to experience much here. We even tried to go to the brew pub next door afterwards, but they were also pretty full, so we ended up just leaving and going to Brouwerij Homeland, which is within walking distance, has great beers, and serves a full menu of food. read more
My friend and I recently visited Amsterdam. We didn't have time to head out to the countryside and see windmills, but we were intrigued by the process of visiting a windmill... AND A BREWERY! That's just what we did here!!! We took a quick ride on the tram out of the central area of Amsterdam to Brouwerij 't IJ. Of course, we took an obligatory selfie out front. This brewery was pretty full, but it was definitely chill. We sat at a table with some other folks, and we started with flights. Then, we tried a few other options from the beer menu and also got a little meat and cheese snack. (Note: you buy food in a different spot than where you buy beer.) The environment here was fun yet relaxed, and the beers were good! I enjoyed trying a variety. And even though it's a bit out from where you might be if you're visiting, it really is super easy to get to... and it's a windmill brewery!!!!!! read more
This is my Dutch buddy's favourite bar in Amsterdam. It's chill and attached to a windmill, what more could you want? We dropped in on a Wednesday afternoon (around 2:45pm). Lots of seating inside and out. There's no table service; order at separate counters for food and drinks. - Flight (€10,50 for 5) - you sadly don't get to choose which beer flavours and it's only available till 5:00pm. Flink, natte, zatte, ijwit and columbus. Beers are standard, easy drinking style. - Ox sausage (€5,50) - smoked raw beef sausage with hot mustard. Never had this before. Best way to describe is it's a tartare like texture but with a much firmer bite. They really go ham with the mustard, a huge generous dollop. Come here for a few beers and to relax/get out of the rain. read more
Located in the Plantage area of Amsterdam, this brewery is located inside the De Gooyer Windmill. They have a large selection of beers available with the taproom open from 2:00-8:00pm. They have a small selection of snacks, so this isn't really a lunch or dinner spot. Try to visit on a sunny day and sit outside in the beer garden. You'll have a great view of the windmill. Recommendation: Order the beer flight and sample several beer styles. My favorite was the Flink, a nice pale ale. read more

Beer brewing in the Netherlands is significant in that the country is the world's largest exporter of beer. The main beer produced and consumed (and subsequently exported) is pale lagers, of which the most famous is Heineken. I am certainly *not* a fan of Heineken and during my trip to Amsterdam I refused to visit that brewery, even though it's considered one of the most well-known breweries in the world. Instead I decided to pay homage to one of the most well-known craft breweries in the country, the Brouwerij 't IJ (pronounced "eh"). The brewery has been producing beers since 1985. While touring with his band south of the Dutch border, the founder fell in love with Belgian beers but at the time there wasn't any breweries in Amsterdam that brewed those specific styles. Hence the first two brews produced by the brewery are their interpretations of the classic Belgian double and triple. The first brewery was once a former bathhouse as up until the mid 1970's the apartments in the cities did not contain showers or baths. The water supply and drainage system were still intact. It also helped that the bathhouse was situated near Amsterdam's biggest windmill, which is one of the brewery's biggest draws. Unfortunately the windmill is owned by the city and is not open to the public. LOGISTICS - Unlike most of the sights in Amsterdam the brewery is not located inside the Canal Ring. From Centraal Station or Dam Square, get on tram 14 to Flevopark and get off at the Pontanusstraat stop. Once off look for the windmill. - Hours: every day from 2-8pm 365 days a year. - Brewery tours available Friday/Saturday/Sunday at 3:30pm in English. Tours are €6.50/person with a limit of 20 people on tour. You can only reserve these tours on that day. Reserve at the bar. (Unfortunately I didn't do this as I visited on a Monday). - Not wheelchair friendly as the bathroom is on a different floor that is only accessible by stairs. - Indoor and outdoor seating. BEERS You can purchase by the glass or bottle. Additionally you can also purchase a flight of 5 but you are not given a choice on what beers you can taste. Instead you are limited to the first five selections on the menu and all 5 are always available - no limited edition nor seasonal brews here. Coming from SD where in a brewery I can essentially choose from any beer in the menu, this was a bit of a disappointment. 1. Flink (Pale Ale, 4.7%). Light and hoppy. 2. Natte (Belgian double, 6.5%). It is smooth and the flavor is primarily earthy consisting of brown sugar, nuts and plums. This was the second brew produced. 3. Zatte (Belgian triple, 8%). The flagship beer as this was the first brew produced. 4. Ijwit (Full-bodied wheat beer, 6.5%). The beer got its name from using wheat malt as barley malt. The aroma has a wonderful scent of lemon and banana. 5. Columbus (Amber, 9%). Slightly sweet with malty aromas of chocolate, fruit and grain with bitter hops standing out nicely in the aftertaste. My favorite beers were the Natte and Zatte and a huge factor in this was due to their similarity to the beers I had in Belgium. I like the roasted malt of the Belgian double and the smoothness of the Belgian triple. Should I find myself in Amsterdam again I look forward to exploring other beer produced by this brewery. As I am now particularly fond of the Belgian styles this is the closest thing to drinking Belgian-style beer in the Netherlands while supporting a local brewery. read more

I wanted to come here for 2 solid reasons... 1) beer. Needs no other explanation. 2) one of the only 8 windmills in the city proper. So to be honest, the windmill was a little underwhelming. But it was cute and I got a few good photos of it. I wanted to take a brewery tour but didn't plan it out properly so I ended up just grabbing a sampler at the bar and people watching. I made the huge mistake of forgetting it was St. Patrick's Day and wow was this place crowded. I could hardly make my way through the bar but luckily they were well staffed and I was able to get my beers and settle in quite quickly. The beer they have is great. They have a nice variety. I really found the Zatte (a tripel) really nice. But I tend to go for heavy blondes (like myself! HA!) The nice couple standing next to me thought all the beers were a little too fruity but I tend to like that so I was pretty pleased with my experience. read more

I dropped in on a Wednesday as they opened and had a small lunch and beer which consisted of a sausage and cheese with mustard and a Kölsch beer. Both were outstanding. The bartender was very nice and the gentlemen working the food side was super friendly and had a few to chat about where we lived, ie Amsterdam and Utah. Very comfy and inviting place, I will definitely be back on my next trip to the Netherlands. The windmill is pretty cool too. My son loves the t-shirt read more

One of my favorite breweries! I went here multiple times on my stay in Amsterdam. Everyone was always happy , it's an upbeat atmosphere. The food was excellent and on a sunny day, lots of friendly patrons fill every seat! read more
Make sure you arrive 30-60 minutes early to get a seat. We arrive a hour early and there was already 15+ patrons outside waiting. One the doors opened we immediately sat at the bar, had the flight and paid for the english tour tickets. If you plan on taking a Brewery Tour purchase your tickets early. They WILL sell out! Also, you receive a beer ticket with your tour coin. The tour was fairly quick, but the guide made it fun. He was also funny, great smile and and very knowledgeable. The beer covered the whole spectrum...IPA, Fruity and even coffee. read more
A brewery in a windmill. Only in the Netherlands. Specifically Amsterdam. We had the local beer at another establishment and really liked it. So of course we had to visit the brewery. We were not disappointed. The venue was very unique and quite cozy inside. It was raining while we were there so the outside patio was empty. Good beer on tap. Lots of food selections. Great merch. All in all a wonderful experience. read more
Fun little spot for a beer and tastings, plus taking a photo of a windmill. This place gets busy! It's kind of an odd set up. You go in one line to order food and although you may have a seat at the bar, you still have to get up, walk around to the front of the bar to order your drink. So? Sitting at the bar is just to drink or eat... get up and order yourself, lol. Staff isn't outwardly friendly, nor attentive. But the people that come are, so I guess that makes up for it? We would come back for the beer, but that's about it. read more
If I was a locsl, this would be my "go-to" place. When the sun is shining apparently it is the go to place. I tried to drop by on Sunday and the place was packed, so much so that people were just chilling out on the sidewalk and in the street drinking their beer. I came on a rainy Monday afternoon and the place was still cracking inside. There weren't 600 people there like Sunday but.... You can get a beer for less than 3 euro. Win!! The beer is fresh as hell! Straight from the brewery fresh. Fresh beer is the best! Service is friendly. Atmosphere is cool. The place is clean. Indoor and outdoor seating. High quality beer that is sooooo smoooooth at least as far as the natte ( think Borat pronunciation) and zatte go. They have flights available. They speak English! Most of Amsterdam does thankfully! Dank ya! The beer is really strong. So if you are keeping track at home.... Super fresh beer, super cheap, high quality, very strong, cool atmosphere, indoor and outdoor seating in a freakin windmill ( which I haven't mentioned yet if you were keeping track) and friendly service. They also have tasty looking snacks in the way of sausage (dry salami I'm nature) cheese, peanuts, smoked sausage, and hard boiled eggs. The prices were all reasonable. 5.50 euro for a serving of sausage. I'm on my 2nd beer and feeling a buzz so time to bring this review to a close. read more

Brouwerij 't IJ is a delightful brewery right under a windmill just east of central Amsterdam. They serve up their home-brewed beers, alongside meat and cheese pub food. The "medium"-sized platter was still very large and could've easily been shared. Most of the seating is outside, so come on a nice day to enjoy the sunshine and relax outdoors! read more
