Craft brewery that was established in the 80s in a former bathhouse. It's next to the amazing DeGooyer Windmill. The tasting room is well appointed and the outdoor patio area is pretty large. They primarily brew organic craft beers leaning towards Belgian influences. The beers we had were spectacular. Far superior than anything I've had in America and we've got some darn good breweries. My favorite is the Zatte Tripel. The food offerings were perfectly European. We shared a board of bread, sausages, cheese, olives, and nuts. Service was fast and friendly. read more

What a gem! We came here on a hot summer day and it was so busy. The service is quick and painless. There's one line for beer and there's one line for food. Is there anything more quintessentially Dutch than having a beer in a windmill? We came to Brouwerij 't IJ twice during our stay in Amsterdam. We found the walk pleasant and the beer tasty. I was big big fan of their Victoria's Secret Pale Ale. During our first visit, we planned to order a flight - but apparently flights are only served before 5pm, and it was almost 6pm. They do, however, offer smaller pours. One of my favorite things about beer in Europe in general is their standard pour is smaller than the standard American pour. Thus, you get to try more! We paired our pours with a snack platter - the perfect arrangement of pickles, cheese, meat, and bread. My only complaint was seeing how many unfinished snack boards were being thrown away! We didn't have any issues destroying ours - I was an especially big fan of the warm sausage. If it's nice, the outside space is packed. If it's rainy, the inside is packed. Either way, it was busy during both visits, but we managed to snag the same two bar stools each time. Just be prepared to be patient if you're coming with a large group. I LOVE their ostrich mascot and their array of merch. You see Brouwerij 't IJ advertised all over, even outside of Amsterdam, so I was a happy patron to visit twice. read more

Awesome spot! A truly nice place to drink a beer and have some fun with friends. This is a very rustic spot with no table service. You get your beer and apps yourself and you find a place to sit. These guys are super sketchy, worse than those scammy eateries in Venice and other tourist hells. Unless you pay close attention when paying for your overpriced beer, you will have gifted them a 20% tip. This happens when you tap your credit card against the reader without looking at the print on the screen underneath. It shows the default 20% as well as other options. It's unlikely you'll pay much attention because you just want to drink your beer and you know that tipping is uncommon in the Netherlands, especially in the bars. After realizing my mistake, I got into a rather heated dispute with the wait staff demanding my tip back. It was just a small amount, but the Netherlands is the last country you expect to be ripped off in. Eventually I got it back with large dollop of stinkeye, and enjoyed my beer as a pariah. I have visited a few times over the years, but June 30 was my last time. Go too Pllek instead. read more

Fantastic brewery located next to one of the eight windmills still left in Amsterdam. Come before 5pm if you're interested in getting a flight, which is a flight of their top five beers. This place is an absolute must for any beer lover traveling in Amsterdam. We arrived in the late afternoon for some pre-dinner drinks, and while the place was pretty packed, we were still able to find a seat. This was also our first beer experience in Amsterdam, so we were looking for some local craft brews to sip. Lucky for us, this brewery is chock full of local beer in a wide range -- everything from IPAs to blondes to sours to stouts. We talked to the bartender for some recommendations and settled on a flight to get a taste of different beers. Once we settled on some that we liked from the flight, we went back for full glasses. The atmosphere is extremely lax and friendly. Everyone -- staff and patrons -- is just there to have a good time and enjoy a good brew. Brouwerij 't IJ is a very unique brewery, and a must-visit while in Amsterdam. I mean, a brewery + windmill within the city? We traveled via a short tram ride, but I would imagine it would be easy to get there by bike as well. Sadly, we only stayed for a beer each, as it was insanely crowded and difficult to get to the bar, much less even think about finding somewhere to sit. We made the mistake of going on a Saturday late afternoon; I would highly recommend trying a weekday shortly after they open for the day. Our visit was pretty disappointing, although I guess now we can say we've been there. We tried the Columbus Amber and the Tripel. The beers were both nice and clean, although comparable to plenty of other beers we tried on our trip. The food is allegedly good, but we couldn't even see the counter to order some snacks, much less be able to get to it to order. Apparently, they also have some fun swag, but again, we could barely even get in the door to order a beer. If we returned to Amsterdam, I would come back early on a weekday, as I am a little sad we didn't get to experience much here. We even tried to go to the brew pub next door afterwards, but they were also pretty full, so we ended up just leaving and going to Brouwerij Homeland, which is within walking distance, has great beers, and serves a full menu of food. read more

My friend and I recently visited Amsterdam. We didn't have time to head out to the countryside and see windmills, but we were intrigued by the process of visiting a windmill... AND A BREWERY! That's just what we did here!!! We took a quick ride on the tram out of the central area of Amsterdam to Brouwerij 't IJ. Of course, we took an obligatory selfie out front. This brewery was pretty full, but it was definitely chill. We sat at a table with some other folks, and we started with flights. Then, we tried a few other options from the beer menu and also got a little meat and cheese snack. (Note: you buy food in a different spot than where you buy beer.) The environment here was fun yet relaxed, and the beers were good! I enjoyed trying a variety. Especially considering the place was absolutely packed and customers were verging on rowdy. We went during the day so i can only imagine how it is at night. Lots of seating inside and out. There's no table service; order at separate counters for food and drinks. - Flight (€10,50 for 5) - you sadly don't get to choose which beer flavours and it's only available till 5:00pm. Flink, natte, zatte, ijwit and columbus. Beers are standard, easy drinking style. - Ox sausage (€5,50) - smoked raw beef sausage with hot mustard. Never had this before. Best way to describe is it's a tartare like texture but with a much firmer bite. They really go ham with the mustard, a huge generous dollop. They have a small selection of snacks, so this isn't really a lunch or dinner spot. Try to visit on a sunny day and sit outside in the beer garden. You'll have a great view of the windmill. Beer brewing in the Netherlands is significant in that the country is the world's largest exporter of beer. The main beer produced and consumed (and subsequently exported) is pale lagers, of which the most famous is Heineken. I am certainly *not* a fan of Heineken and during my trip to Amsterdam I refused to visit that brewery, even though it's considered one of the most well-known breweries in the world. Instead I decided to pay homage to one of the most well-known craft breweries in the country, the Brouwerij 't IJ (pronounced "eh"). The brewery has been producing beers since 1985. While touring with his band south of the Dutch border, the founder fell in love with Belgian beers but at the time there wasn't any breweries in Amsterdam that brewed those specific styles. Hence the first two brews produced by the brewery are their interpretations of the classic Belgian double and triple. The first brewery was once a former bathhouse as up until the mid 1970's the apartments in the cities did not contain showers or baths. The water supply and drainage system were still intact. It also helped that the bathhouse was situated near Amsterdam's biggest windmill, which is one of the brewery's biggest draws. Unfortunately the windmill is owned by the city and is not open to the public. LOGISTICS - Unlike most of the sights in Amsterdam the brewery is not located inside the Canal Ring. From Centraal Station or Dam Square, get on tram 14 to Flevopark and get off at the Pontanusstraat stop. Once off look for the windmill. - Hours: every day from 2-8pm 365 days a year. - Brewery tours available Friday/Saturday/Sunday at 3:30pm in English. Tours are €6.50/person with a limit of 20 people on tour. You can only reserve these tours on that day. Reserve at the bar. (Unfortunately I didn't do this as I visited on a Monday). - Not wheelchair friendly as the bathroom is on a different floor that is only accessible by stairs. - Indoor and outdoor seating. BEERS You can purchase by the glass or bottle. Additionally you can also purchase a flight of 5 but you are not given a choice on what beers you can taste. Instead you are limited to the first five selections on the menu and all 5 are always available - no limited edition nor seasonal brews here. Coming from SD where in a brewery I can essentially choose from any beer in the menu, this was a bit of a disappointment. 1. Flink (Pale Ale, 4.7%). Light and hoppy. 2. Natte (Belgian double, 6.5%). It is smooth and the flavor is primarily earthy consisting of brown sugar, nuts and plums. This was the second brew produced. 3. Zatte (Belgian triple, 8%). The flagship beer as this was the first brew produced. 4. Ijwit (Full-bodied wheat beer, 6.5%). The beer got its name from using wheat malt as barley malt. The aroma has a wonderful scent of lemon and banana. 5. Columbus (Amber, 9%). Slightly sweet with malty aromas of chocolate, fruit and grain with bitter hops standing out nicely in the aftertaste. My favorite beers were the Natte and Zatte and a huge factor in this was due to their similarity to the beers I had in Belgium. I like the roasted malt of the Belgian double and the smoothness of the Belgian triple. Should I find myself in Amsterdam again I look forward to exploring other beer produced by this brewery. As I am now particularly fond of the Belgian styles this is the closest thing to drinking Belgian-style beer in the Netherlands while supporting a local brewery. read more

I wanted to come here for 2 solid reasons... 1) beer. Needs no other explanation. 2) one of the only 8 windmills in the city proper. So to be honest, the windmill was a little underwhelming. But it was cute and I got a few good photos of it. I wanted to take a brewery tour but didn't plan it out properly so I ended up just grabbing a sampler at the bar and people watching. I made the huge mistake of forgetting it was St. Patrick's Day and wow was this place crowded. I could hardly make my way through the bar but luckily they were well staffed and I was able to get my beers and settle in quite quickly. The beer they have is great. They have a nice variety. I really found the Zatte (a tripel) really nice. But I tend to go for heavy blondes (like myself! HA!) The nice couple standing next to me thought all the beers were a little too fruity but I tend to like that so I was pretty pleased with my experience. read more

They also do flights of beers and two sizes as well as a number of other beers so lots of options to try. They serve food as well but didn't try any of it as I was heading to dinner after. If I was a locsl, this would be my "go-to" place. When the sun is shining apparently it is the go to place. I tried to drop by on Sunday and the place was packed, so much so that people were just chilling out on the sidewalk and in the street drinking their beer. I came on a rainy Monday afternoon and the place was still cracking inside. There weren't 600 people there like Sunday but.... You can get a beer for less than 3 euro. Win!! The beer is fresh as hell! Straight from the brewery fresh. Fresh beer is the best! Service is friendly. Atmosphere is cool. The place is clean. Indoor and outdoor seating. High quality beer that is sooooo smoooooth at least as far as the natte ( think Borat pronunciation) and zatte go. They have flights available. They speak English! Most of Amsterdam does thankfully! Dank ya! The beer is really strong. So if you are keeping track at home.... Super fresh beer, super cheap, high quality, very strong, cool atmosphere, indoor and outdoor seating in a freakin windmill ( which I haven't mentioned yet if you were keeping track) and friendly service. They also have tasty looking snacks in the way of sausage (dry salami I'm nature) cheese, peanuts, smoked sausage, and hard boiled eggs.
