Tuna nigiri and spicy hamachi roll
    Lily L.

I've been meaning to try Brookside Sushi for quite a while. I was in the neighborhood and decided on take out. I called in the order and received it about 20 minutes later. The inside was cozy and cute. I'd like to try to dine in sometime. I was impressed with the flavors in the spicy yellowtail roll the tuna nigiri hit the spot. Just getting a taste is definitely going to bring me back. I can't wait to try more of their interesting rolls!

I love that happy hour is every evening from 4-6pm, the seafood is fresh, and the rolls are original and creative. It's a small restaurant and the service can be a bit rocky. Sal ( Salvador ) is the chef owner and has a menu featuring both Sashimi, Rolls, Entrees, Noodles, and Hot Pot. When we arrived, it was open seating for parties of 2 and 4. The tables are close though and there is a chef's counter and open kitchen. I think there was just one server and one food runner. We started by ordinary a couple things from the happy hour menu and and the regular menu. The chef sends out a welcoming crab salad ( amuse-bouche ) after you've had a chance to look over the menu. The Pork Gyoza arrives crispy and delicious. We followed that with Vivian Roll which was flavorful and a little spicy. We asked the server if it had shrimp ( it didn't ) and she didn't know. Instead of stepping away, she called out to the chef from our table to find out. When the salad course was served, only one fork was delivered and when the Udon Noodles arrived there was one spoon. I would have loved to have requested additional silverware, but the server was stretched trying to keep up with all the tables. When my friend's water was empty, I swapped it with mine, and I finally was able to request more drinks along with 2 more appetizers to enjoy as my entree. The soft shell crab arrived, the dynamite flambe style never did. We discussed dessert and I ordered the Flan Special and it arrived without ice cream along with a check with the missing appetizer on the check... The server offered to see about the appetizer, but I asked that it be removed. Sal crafted a wonderful menu and it's delicious. Next time I might do better bringing some extra utensils and asking for the check if it gets busy.

Service was lovely, but the food was just so-so. We were greeted with a sample of the spicy crab salad, I did not try, but my friends both really enjoyed it. Ordered the edamame, rainbow roll, and ikura nigiri. If you need gf soy sauce, just ask and they will bring you a small bowl of it. The sushi rolls were a little smaller than what I am used to, rice was a little harder as well. The ikura (fish roe) nigiri was brought out at the very end after the meal was finished. Unfortunately, I wasn't highly impressed with my meal. It seems like a consistent place for sushi, and would come back if I were in the area. Our server was super attentive and checked on us throughout. While he made it known that he hasn't tried all of the menu items, he still tried his best to make recommendations and was happy to bring more ginger, water, drinks.

TIP: Be sure to check out their daily specials on Instagram. We were able to find parking out front and were able to be seated easily, it's a small restaurant with seating at the bar as well as at small tables. The sushi was all delicious as was the soup and edamame. We had a few different rolls. Since we came early there weren't a ton of people so we got our food quickly. The service was friendly. I plan on coming back.

So I just had to update tonight I had an order to go as I needed a great meal to keep me going for a long work night. I got the daikon roll for the first time because it doesn't have rice it was pleasantly surprised with the combo of different fish very tasty just smooth and silky like I like the fish too taste. BUT I got fried gyozo as I often do anywhere Asian I order these were simply cooked to perfection tonight I mean perfection crispy crunchy not at all oily or greasy - yum!!!

Salvy continues to produce the best sushi in the area. The quality and freshness is the high watermark. It's not overly drowned in sauces. The pieces don't require you to unhinge your jaw either. You get the full flavor of all the ingredients in each bite or mouthful. It's a smaller, clean shop that's not teaming with staff and they get many phone orders for carry out. So you may wait a bit longer than you're used to. But, that being said, it's well worth the wait. Expect a smile, wave and thank you from Salvy on your way out.

I've been to many sushi restaurants in the KC area but this place has definitely left an imprint on me. I don't remember what the roll was called, but the components in the roll were exceptionally well-balanced. If you're looking for fresh and delicious sushi it's time you try this place.

I love sushi and I was so excited when I heard of the new sushi place coming to Brookside. Located in the old location of Brookside Poultry, Brookside sushi is serving up fresh and delicious sushi. One thing I loved about it was the menu isn't pages long where the rolls all end up looking the same. There are of course plenty of options but not an overwhelming amount. Also the beef udon was so flavorful and filling! I had plenty to take home for left overs. While there is no outdoor seating, when i went, the tables are a good distance from each other so I felt safe eating inside. I look forward to trying their food for take out as well!

To start the evening, there was a happy birthday card waiting at our seats and not long after sitting down we received a complimentary furikake rice which was delicious. After that, we started ordering and by the end of our meal, we both had two delicious drinks and a very wide array of hand rolls and other dishes. There were definitely some stand outs, although there wasn't a single bite I didn't enjoy. First standout would be the cucumber dish, which is an amazing first bite to get your meal started. It was covered in a delicious, garlicky, slightly spicy chili sauce with sweet peppers and it was a great choice. A standout among the hand rolls for me was surprisingly the hamachi due to it being one of the cheaper hand rolls. It was a very bright and citrusy-salty fusion and I wouldn't change a thing about it. A final standout is going to have to be the sake crudo. The sake crudo is such a unique dish full of flavors I've never had that combines a sweetness with a nice chili crunch and soft buttery big pieces of salmon. I could write great things about every single thing I ate but I'd end up with a novel. To sum it up there isn't a single bad thing to say about Kata Nori. The service was amazing, the layout of the restaurant is unique and intimate, every ingredient tastes so fresh and the flavor combinations are perfect plus their drinks are on par or better than any cocktail bar I've been to. I highly highly recommend this to absolutely any lover of sushi!!

The flavors in each and every dish on the table were clearly so intentionally implemented and I can't wait to come back and try more. Not to mention, the overall ambiance of the place makes for a fancy date night or the start of an evening with friends. The vibes were immaculate. Every menu item feels very intentional and well executed. The offerings on the cocktail menu are fabulous. Both the ube and lychee cocktails are delicious. My partner and his mom both had a sake flight, each offering was delicious and different in offering. If you like sake you will definitely find one you like with this flight! They both ended up liking a yuzu sake and split a bottle, the finish was sweet, crisp and perfect for the Kansas City heat. I started with an espresso martini, the coffee flavor was strong and sweet and I was a fan! During our meal I opted for a martini corner dirty vodka martini and as a dirty martini enthusiast I was very pleased and will continue to recommend! I finished off with a matcha martini that was sweet, creamy and smooth and paired perfectly with our tempura banana! Speaking of food, the star of the show, we genuinely had only good bites here as usual. We sat at the bar on the corner, it was a nice seat that captured the energy of the restaurant, busy but somehow tranquil. Our bartender was great as well as all the staff behind the bar and host stand! I especially appreciate the patience of our bartender, we came and ordered many rounds of small plates, (you should do the same!) and he was nothing but enthusiastic and helpful. To start we had some furikake fries and shishito peppers. There are a lot of exciting and multilayed dishes on the menu, I think these two humble sides though really pack a punch and show that everything on the menu brings it's A game. From there the food ordering escalated as everyone in my group was over the top excited. The stand outs for me were, the dry aged salmon nigiri, the toro hand roll, the crab apple roll and my group was especially blown away by the scallops and are still talking about them a week later! Noka is in my opinion, really bringing a new level of dining to Kansas City. I'm not over stating it to say it is one of a kind in this city and everyone should try to get in.

Every detail feels intentional, from the plating and presentation to the atmosphere itself. As someone who appreciates design, Noka absolutely delivers. Food-wise, there were two undeniable stars of the night: * Wagyu Nigiri (100/10) - One of the best bites I've ever had. Rich, buttery, perfectly balanced, and worth ordering every single time. * Crab Campanelli (11/10) - Absolutely incredible. Comfort food elevated to fine dining quality. If I came back tomorrow, I'd order this again without hesitation. Other highlights: * Filet (10/10) - Beautifully cooked, incredibly flavorful, and paired with perfectly prepared bok choy. Everything on the plate felt intentional. * Night Market Wings (8.5/10) - The quality was excellent. The sweet heat profile just wasn't exactly my personal preference, but that's purely subjective. If you enjoy spicy food with a lingering, slightly numbing heat, you'll probably love these. * Shrimp Tempura Roll (8/10) - Very good and executed well. * Tuna Roll (7/10) - Good, but it was the least memorable item compared to some of the standout dishes we ordered. Noka excels at creating a complete dining experience. Beautiful atmosphere, thoughtful presentation, excellent service, and several dishes that genuinely surprised us.
