Yanni and staff are excellent! We ordered the traditional breakfast but the thing that made me give five stars is the service and attentiveness to their customer. We felt very at home to the point that it didn't matter what we ordered because rest assured that it will be handled with perfection. I don't recall what everybody else ordered but I ordered the corned beef and it was as good as advertised. Yanni let us try the traditional Greek dessert! This definitely made our day. Brookside Diner has that classic Jersey diner feel with great prices, huge portions, and bottomless coffee refills. The service was quick and friendly. I ordered two eggs with Taylor Ham, which came with potatoes and toast. I was pleasantly surprised to see they had gluten free toast. They also have gluten free Belgian waffles on the menu, so I'd definitely try those out next time. I was part of a party of 2, and our combined meals, two coffees, one juice, and one side came out to be around $30, which is more than reasonable for how much food you get. The space itself is somewhat outdated, but like I said, it's a classic diner. If you're headed to a diner, I'd assume you're not looking for somewhere especially upscale. 3 of us visited yesterday for lunch. Highlights include none. Cons? 1) less then satisfactory service - booth was set for 2 people, and here are 3 of us. I eventually grabbed my own set up of napkins and silverware from another table. Apparently server cannot handle this. 2) coworker ordered a side of fries with gravy. Server forgot the fries but brought the gravy. Diner with all the classic dishes and Greek influenced dishes at the local Rt 10 space (only available going Eastbound, so you'll have to do a u-turn if coming the other way through a jughandle). Friendly service, but the Brookside burger was tasteless and needed more seasoning for the beef, onions and mushrooms. The big roll it was on didn't help (needed to be grilled with some butter). Fries were ok, and the artichoke & spinach dip was a bit thin and lacked enough artichoke. The waffle was good, though, and the bacon was cooked properly crisp without being burnt. This may quite possibly be in the top 5 of New Jersey diners. Tucked along route 10, there is no place more 1983 than here with the Ms. Pac-Man in the vestibule and the Cure playing overhead. Which is why I already loved it before I even sat down. I was waited on by the affable Joe. A gentle man in his 40s who does a great job taking care of his customers. The menu is expansive filled with specials and deals. There are the early bird deals M-F, 3-6pm too. But do not fear, Sunday night never fails with specials too. I decided on a meatball parmigiana that came with pickles, a side of cole slaw and fries. My husband had the chicken stir fry that comes with potato dinner rolls and a big pre entree salad. The food was delicious! The meatballs were smothered in mozzarella and they tasted like the kind my Italian grandmother used to make. The taste of the stir fry was equally good and the vegetables were Jersey fresh. There was so much food, I had lunch the next day too. All for $28! We did not have dessert but the cheesecake was popular at the tables near us. The other patrons were as sweet as dessert including a man with significant learning challenges who was quite talkative. We continued to smile at his older dad - it was a delight to hear him happy. We did not mind at all. We only regretted that we did not buy them dinner. (Next time!) We came in on a chilly afternoon for some soup and grilled cheese. There were a couple of other customers also having lunch but the service was very prompt. The soup was delicious and the grilled cheese, even better. It just hit the spot. Perfect, quality, NJ Diner food. My family and I frequented Brookside pre-covid. At least one Sunday a month we would come here and have a family breakfast. The servers are consistently nice and provide very attentive service. We usually get different variations of omelettes. I always ask for egg whites and they make sure to use fresh eggs as opposed to the boxed stuff. If i get a veggie omelet it is jam packed with veggies- no wimpy weepy omelettes here. If you get one of the breakfast specials, it actually comes with a coffee AND a small juice. So i came here because my dad was in a doctor's appointment nearby for a couple of hours. There's plenty of parking in the parking lot and seating indoors. The staff sat me pretty quickly and served me water and took my order in a timely fashion. I got the breakfast #5 which was the western omelet with cheese, replaced the homefries and toast with two stacks of pancakes, juice and coffee/tea for only $7.29 ($6 something without cheese; $8 something on the weekends). Everything was pretty good, you can't really mess it up haha. Really good deal though. (Although there was a mix up in where they overpriced me so make sure you check the check before paying). You pay up at front (i didn't know that or where to pay which was kind of annoying because it made me feel stupid, but i guess i should've assumed since my diner works the same way)-but there's like 3 counters with registers sooooo... Parked in the lot, were several vintage cars including an old Thunderbird (all from customers). The inside of the Brookside Diner has several banners. There is a full-length bar, multiple tables, and booths too. It's everything you want or need in a diner. Coffee: The coffee at the Brookside Diner is brewed hot and fresh. The waiter added plenty of whipped cream, and I was given plenty of refills. Food: The Brookside Diner has everything you want and need in a diner. The Brookside Diner has all-day breakfast, lunch, and dinner options too. Since it was 7:30 am, I ordered one of my favorite diner breakfasts: steak and eggs. I had the choice of "ribeye steak and eggs" or "sliced steak and eggs," I thought: why not and decided to treat myself to the ribeye steak and eggs. I underestimated the size of the ribeye steak and eggs. The steak itself must have been over 16 ounces. It was cooked exactly how I asked, rare, and I have no complaints. In fact, it was one of my more favorite diner steak meals (including dinner). The home fries tasted like pure vegetable oil, which I expect from many diners. Dessert: A The chocolate chip muffins at the Brookside Diner looked appetizing, so I decided to take one to go on my hike. Since I was out hiking, everything tasted good, but I appreciated how dense the muffin was.  Plus, there were plenty of chocolate chips. I came here with my bf for a chill dinner . We were deciding between a few diners in the area . I accidentally pulled into the whippany diner when we originally planned to go here lol. I wish we went to the other diner because this place was downright disappointing . They said there was no soda whatsoever ... I mean that's crazy haha ! Also , the greens on my salad aren't fresh at all . Halfway thru , I noticed a lot of them were wilted / kinda soggy . Our server wasn't too attentive either . I was looking forward to exploring brunch options while visiting the area, but was disappointed. I ordered the golden pancakes and Greek yogurt. The Greek yogurt was advertised to have both strawberries and blueberries, but only had strawberries on them. The granola had a slightly metallic flavor to it, and it just did not taste refreshing. My pancakes also tasted slightly metallic. Maybe it was the fat used to cook the pancakes? I wanted buttery and fluffy, but was disappointed. Our server - bless her - seemed to have an off day. She forgot my pancake order, came around way too times to ask if we needed anything, but then forgot what we asked for and came back to ask again. She also came by at least 3 times to kind of stare at our table without doing anything. 3 stars because my husband's omelette was delicious and at least the server was overly attentive, rather than dismissive... but it was a rather stressful brunch experience. read more

I used to dine here all the time since 2009. I always loved the food. I moved out of the area in 2016 and had not dined here until this past August 21, 2019. I don't know what happened, but, in my opinion, the food was not good. I ordered a nachos with cheese appetizer, stuffed mushrooms, a handmade or hand rolled turkey burger and my daughter ordered a grilled chicken sandwich. When the nachos arrived, it had meat made with some sauce I could not identify. I don't believe I saw meat mentioned in the menu description. The meat sauce was not to my liking. My daughter liked her stuffed mushrooms, to me it was just ok. I've had better. Now, the turkey burger was, well, I'm not sure, but it did not taste like turkey at all! It was huge and kinda crumbly and tasted like breadcrumbs mixed with corn meal. I definitely did not taste turkey. I put salt, pepper, ketchup all to no avail. I could not eat it. I cook a lot with ground turkey as I don't eat ground beef, except for the ocasional beef burger. I know my turkey meat and this was not it. I returned it and it was removed from the bill. I should have ordered their regular turkey burger, which I'm assuming is pre-packaged frozen stuff. My daughter's grilled chicken was tasteless. The waitress was nice but, In my opinion, the chef needs to season his food and if he's going to make handmade turkey burgers, he can't forget to add turkey! A breadcrumb burger is not going to cut it. It is just not good. I will not be returning. read more

The food here isn't bad, but my real issue is that they are scammers. See my receipt... If you add up these 5 sandwiches, the subtotal is $53.50 and they have the subtotal as $55.30. When I called to ask about the difference the first person who answered immediately was like "ummmmm let me get the owner" and then the owner came on the phone and as I'm explaining for several minutes that this doesn't add up he's like "oh you know what the extra charge is for the containers." No one ever told us about this imaginary fee, nor was it listed anywhere on the menu or on the receipt. This is extremely deceptive! It's a pretty solid Diner that serves some very solid Diner food. This is my 3rd visit and I have to say that the Brookside definitely gets the job done of filling folks up. In my quest for searching out Special Diners, I found that most every one has a Specialty dish. Or a Specific style that sets them apart from all the other Diners. My point is that Brookside doesn't have that Signature kind of meal, it's just food that's put in front of you for your consumption. It's certainly not a bad thing but it is the reason that I say that this is just another decent Diner and nothing Special. Breakfast is pretty solid with good Eggs, Pancakes, Omelets, and French Toast but the Bacon is Not very good at all. There's a Bacon meat to fat ratio that is way too much fat for my liking. I found myself separating the fat off the Bacon. I also find the coffee here to be way too weak and flavorless. Lunch is ok here with very good Soups, Sandwiches, and Burgers but the Salad needs some quality control on freshness. Dinner is very good at the Brookside with the Specials you get alot of food at a very reasonable value. The Baked Meatloaf with mushroom gravy is excellent as are the Mashed Potatoes. Also Chicken Cordon Blue is delicious as are most of the Chicken with Pasta dishes that I've enjoyed here. So if you're hungry and you find yourself in this area, come and get your Munch on! read more

Came here for an early dinner and the restaurant was really quiet. Service was quick. They do have gluten free pancakes, waffles and bread. I got the Waffles something I haven't had in a LONG time and they were good (I only have a gluten sensitivity so I can not comment on safety for celiacs). My only complaint was that with it being an off hour and slow the staff were having a loud inappropriate conversation that all patrons could hear. Had a fun lunch with mom at the charming Brookside Diner this weekend. Major, major kudos for the hospitality and service; I can't remember being treated so nicely at a diner. Although our order was on the small side, we enjoyed the cheeseburger deluxe. To some, the diner may need an upgrade, but I find it to have that authentic, old school look and feel that would make me return. I look forward to stopping in again and getting some more classic, NJ diner food. read more

I hate to give a low star rating, but we have Brookside Diner two tries and it just never got better. The food is extremely bland - there is not one ounce of seasoning in any of it, and both times my omelet was extremely over cooked. The service is very slow, even though the restaurant is never close to full. The first time we'd were there, the waitress offered a coffee to go at the end of the meal which I was happy to accept. This felt like a redeeming touch because it was complimentary. The second time, our waitress didn't come back to our table once, except to drop off the food and the bill. Most of my meal, I had nothing to drink. Before we left I walked for a coffee to go- since she never refilled my cup while we were there - and she had the audacity to charge for it. Frankly, if she had ever come back to our table during our meal I would have not needed a coffee to go. We will not be coming back here. read more

Stopped in Sunday after my daughter's softball practice. I've been here before, numerous times actually, and have no idea why I haven't reviewed it yet. In a nutshell, my daughter really likes this diner-she absolutely loves the French onion soup and thinks their hash browns are the best in the area. I'm also a fan of this little diner, but I might not be quite as enthusiastic. I've had the burgers here and they aren't bad, the French dip is pretty good too, but I'm so so on the fries. Breakfasts here are really good-especially the omelettes-and the coffee is pretty good too. One of my 'tester' sandwiches for a diner is a grilled ham and Swiss on rye...should be a pretty easy sandwich to make, but you'd be surprised at how many places can't get it right. Brookside got it right. Look, this isn't my favorite diner, but it is definitely a diner worthy of my cash. Service here has always been decent-they keep the drinks filled, they get you your food fairly quickly, they serve you with a smile (usually), and the prices aren't bad either. read more

We got takeout from here. Our favorite diner closed recently and we were looking for a good replacement, this Diner is local, so have it a shot. My wife had a California ( vegetarian) wrap, I had the Brookside burger. For desert we tried crepes w fresh strawberries and creme. The Burger was okay, nothing special, the fries weren't great and they tasted like the oil used hadn't been changed in a while. My wife's wrap was edible but nothing special, the mixed greens that came with it were these cut up pieces in a plastic container. The crepes were inedible, they were tough, and had an off taste from what they were cooked in. It could be this was just a bad night, I know restaurants thanks to Covid have staff shortages and that could be part of the problem. What makes this disappointing is the diner has an interesting menu, lot of different kinds of entrees than a lot of diners have. We will prob try this again when things calm down and see if it is better,when they aren't stretched for staff. read more

I love this place and I love the owner John. He is honestly the nicest guy on the planet. When I go I normally get any of the soups. Never been disappointed when I've ordered any of them but my favourite is the French onion or the split pea with homemade croutons. Most recently I had the chicken franchise for dinner over rice and I thought it was excellent. The cheesecake was my dessert and that was excellent as well. Another dessert I've had in the past is the bread pudding which I live and take to go sometimes. Friendly staff and never too long of a wartime To be seats for for my food even though this place is always packed when I go. They have a huge parking lot but they are not open 24 hrs. They do close at some point but only for a few hours. They also have cigarette machine if you are desperate. The time before last I had the souvaki made with pork and it was not dry at all the pork was moist like it was marinated. read more
