I am sad that Brooks' Place is closed. I didn't get a chance to fully enjoy this food truck. I came here last October to meet with my foodie friends for lunch. I came here for a UYE event & it wasn't as good as I expected. I wasn't going to write a review because I didn't come for the 2nd time but since I won't ever go back I figured they'll need some constructive feedback to better themselves. This BBQ truck stand is located by Krogers and a lot of other stores so there's plenty of parking spots. They have some outside seating for you to enjoy your food as well. I decided to order their burger special, that comes with a brisket inside. I also got their Mac and cheese. So I thought my burger was below par. It tasted frozen and it was dry. They only gave me a half slice of brisket and that was dry as well. The only thing that I enjoyed was the sauce & the bacon. Other than that it wasn't worth a 25 dollar burger. It was ridiculous that it didn't even come with a side and you had to order that separately. If I'm making you a 25 dollar burger, I'll make sure that I make my patties in-house & on a brioche bun. The Mac and cheese were meh. It was clumpy & there was an odd color on it as well. It was also smoky which is fine but it had a charcoal taste to it. I honestly didn't even finish it. I was going to order some brisket to go but seeing as how underwhelming my meal was I decided to just skip on that. The owner did come out to greet us along with his flask which I thought was unprofessional. I also smelled alcohol breath when he was speaking well. I've tried. I've given it my best shot. And I just don't get it. It's been four separate times that I've given this place a shot and I still don't get it. Now I have to give props for their style of the BBQ here. The best meats are made on a wood burning grill. No propane, just all wood and charcoal. So hats off for that. That said, I have to stop there. When I pull up to a place like this I expect to be totally blown away on flavor. In every bite I want to taste the passion on that grill. Each and everytime I've been here it fail short of passion. In fact, it taste like perhaps there once upon a time was passion, but that passion has fled like a divorced couple from a burning house. Sorry Brooks fans I'm just not impressed. It's a high price for barely mediocre BBQ. Everytime I go there to give it a shot, I leave telling myself to just stick with cooking it myself at home. Is there tenderness in the meat? Yes. It's just lacking in flavor and care. Even the sauce they have doesn't save it. Now maybe it's just me and the impression I got from reading the reviews. I love barbecue, especially the brisket! I tried the brisket here and honestly, it was delicious in flavor. It was well seasoned, juicy, and tender. However, it was extremely greasy. I ordered a lean brisket sandwich and the meat was substantially drenched in grease as if it had been soaking in grease for hours. It was also cut uneven like a big block of cheese that had been sliced with a dull knife. I wish I had photos to show proof of my accusations but this was some time ago before I started doing reviews on businesses. I tried to give it another chance and ordered a brisket sandwich at a later date, but it was still the same. The sandwich was drenched and soaked from the greasy brisket. I always get my bbq sauce on the side therefore the sandwich was not soggy from the sauce. The grease made me so sick the first time around but I still tried to give Mr. Brooks a chance. The customer service isn't that great either. They were extremely slow and unprofessional in their approach to the customers. I'm saying, if I want customers to patronize and support my business, I'm going to insure that they are welcomed and greeted with a friendly and happy smile. I don't like paying my good hard earned money in an establishment where the staff is dead and nonchalant in character. However, that's just me. Maybe others like to spend their money for poor quality food and customer service but I don't. I will give you a chance once or twice but that's it. My wife and I stopped by Brook's place for lunch. We were not disappointed. The brisket was right on the money, true Texas style BBQ. Perfectly seasoned, smoked to a tender texture. We enjoyed every bite. We had potato salad and beans as sides. The potato salad is tasty and the beans are great. He does serve sauce with the brisket, but it doesn't need it at all. To each his own on that. Mr. Brooks is a no nonsense man and likes to run his business his way. I can respect that, after all I don't have to go if I don't want to. However, I choose to go because he's a 100% legit pit master. I happen to align with his views but that doesn't sway my personal decision to patronize his business. There is a reason he makes it in the Texas Monthly too 50 BBQ joints. It because of his product. I just ate here a few hours ago with a lovely friend and I have to say that I was impressed by the brisket. We both ordered the quarter pound sandwich. The brisket was both very flavorful and tender. I read some of the other reviews about there being bad customer service and something about the owner treating black people bad. I didn't have that experience. The gentleman was respectful and engaged in conversation when I asked him questions. Me and my friend are both black as well as the gentleman working behind the counter (not sure if he was the owner though). But I thought the signs he has up were hilarious and I felt very safe being there. I would definitely return to try other items on the menu in the near-future. I had to tell him that we were ready. If you have your LTC and firearm in a holster you will receive 10percent off. I've been hearing about Brooks's Place for some time now and decided I needed to go check it out. Got a chance to speak with Mr Brooks before ordering and he told me he's been there for 10 years offering catering, special events and general sales. He told me he doesn't need to check the temp because he can look at the meat and know it's done. Very impressive because sometimes meet can be stubborn, especially during a stall. I ordered sliced brisket and sausage. WOW!! That was the most tender brisket I've ever eaten in my life. It was falling apart when I would try and pick it up. Amazing! I absolutely love their food. This is hands down the most consistent BBQ place in the area. Owner is always present, friendly and strapped. I love their policy on firearms and that they offer a discount if you have licences to conceal and carry. I fell safe here. Even the menu is artillery themed. They are located in the parking lot near Ace. Can't miss them. They have lots of tables with benches. Tables always clean, utensils, napkins, lighters whatever you need. Definitely good for groups. The BBQ isn't cheap but it's sooo worth it. The crust and smoke on their brisket is a clear sign of a well crafted skill and process. Their BBQ sauce is so delicious I've been trying to make my own. I never get lean brisket bit I'm sure it's just as great. I believe the portion is very fair and I always feel satisfied or I can't finish it. Leftovers are delicious too. They have tons of sides, all delicious but sometimes they sell out of the more popular items. I like the Mac and Cheese, beans and potatoe salad the most. Garlic potatoes are seasonal. They are opened must days off the week and only close if they sell out. I usually visit around lunch between 1-3 and they aren't over crowded. This place has become a staple in the community. I wanted to like this place but was very disappointed in the quality for the price. I'd compare to spring creek and give the nod to spring creek. The problem is they're double the price and for that I'd expect better. I've had blacks and Valentina's in Austin so maybe expectations were high but this was poor even compared to mediocre BBQ. I ordered brisket which was basically tough roast beef and the beef ribs which I could compare to Chinese pork ribs. The sauce is good but if you want more than a 2oz portion you'll have to fork over $1.50 per portion. For those who like this I'm glad you found a place you enjoy. But for those who appreciate good BBQ and are looking for that here, I suggest pass and save your money. read more

I had the privilege of stopping in at Brooks' over the weekend. I had some guests in town and since they were hungry and we were in the area we stopped in. We ordered 1 1/2 lbs of ribs, some mac and cheese and potato salad. Also while you wait there is an ice chest right in front that says" free beer with id" so of course we had to try.They were extremely cold and refreshing. The ribs were tender and meaty and the mac and cheese had a bbq flavor. The potato salad was not like the kind your mom would make but pretty good. The good -pulled pork and moist brisket. Seriously, get these two! So moist and tender with tasty bark and fatty goodness. The fat had soaked through the wrapper and paper bag by the time we got home. Don't even need barbecue sauce. -free drinks while you wait. They have bottled water, soda, and sweet tea. The bad - It's a little trailer. They have two little picnic table with umbrellas set up outside. There's not a lot of space. -sides were not good at all. Got the potato salad and green beans. I've sadly had much better from the grocery store or can. Ended up throwing some of it out. -poor design on their signs. Hard to read some of the menu because the design overlaps the text. The logo could use some work too. -the wait was awful. Granted, we came the day after the Houston Chronicle article came out, but the line wasn't terribly long, yet it took a total of almost forty minutes from when we arrived to when we finally got our food. -pricey menu. The prices were higher than most barbecue places. -had the "we're out of meat" sign up when we pulled up a little after noon. I have been here twice now and thought it was time to write the review. First time I had the 1/2 chicken plate with beans and potato salad. Second time it was the brisket sandwich. The chicken was excellent. Sides were good I just wish they had given me a little more. Oh well... The brisket sandwich was excellent also. It's located up in the extreme Northwest part of the Greater Houston area so its not an easy drive for many. I live about 20 minutes away. The chicken plate was 11.99. The sandwich by itself is 6.99. Both prices are a little high. Yes the food is very good but $7 for a sandwich even this good is no bargain. For some reason their sides start at $3.99 for their smallest serving. So if I had ordered beans as a side with the sandwich it would have added $4 to the total. What's surprises me about this is that the restaurant is in an outdoor food trailer. They have a couple of picnic tables to eat on if you want to stay. I tbelieve most people in the area get the food to go. I think the prices are high considering they don't have the overhead of a restaurant building (which I understand they will move too soon.) Yes, its very good BBQ but you will pay for it.... This place is a hidden gem. The barbecue is so authentic. You can tell it was made with love. I ordered the two meats with two sides. I chose brisket and ribs(beef). It was so delicious and cooked to perfection. The ribs were tender and had a healthy portion of meat on them. The brisket had a small amount of fat along the side which sealed in the juices and kept the meat moist. My two sides of choice were potato salad and green beans. The potato salad was well seasoned and the consistency was nice. By this I mean it wasn't like baby food but it also wasn't large cuts of potatoes throughout. There was a nice balance. The green beans I would say were the only downfall to the meal. I think it was the choice of seasoning. Overall the meal was great and the portion sizes were worth the price. Damn good bbq. I'm not a native Texan. I'm originally from the Carolinas and our bbq is good but Brooks Place steps it up. The brisket I ordered was thick and juicy with just the right amount of meat to fat ratio. It wasn't overly salty and the bbq sauce Brooks provided was not too sweet, but just sweet and tangy enough to make my taste buds jump. The baked beans and Mac and cheese were delicious. I loved that the beans tasted slightly smoky and it was thick but very soft. The Mac and cheese were made with shells rather than pipes and it was the little attention to detail that this man does that makes me want to come back. Brooks even provides free beer to the guest in a damn cooler! I would've popped a cold one but I had matters to take care of. 12:30 6/13/14 - Brook's Place is still is producing Top 50 quality. Nice to see he is enjoying some of the fruits of success. I noticed he has upgraded his pickup and installed a metal canopy structure. The steel canopy is sooo much better than the tailgate tent held down with strings and weights. I bet a few stiff winds sent that baby sailing. But most of all he finally got some much needed help to work the goose neck trailer. Congrats to Brooks for being a consistent standout in Houston BBQ. I scored Brooks Place a 92 out of 100. Consistently producing Grand Champion Texas BBQ. Smoke: Oak but I spotted some sticks of hickory or pecan. Still working the steel barrel wood fired pit. Brisket: Excellent. 1/4in smoke ring beneath thick black seasoned bark. Received slices from the point so they were moist and full of smokey rendered fat. No knife needed perfect tenderness. Full smoke infused throughout meat and fat. A silky luxurious slice of brisket. No sauce needed at all. Ribs: Very Good. A small spare rib with great bark and seasoning. Tenderness was near perfect with slight reslience but clean bone. Good smokey pork flavor. No sauce needed. Sausage: Excellent. (ditto) A big strong traditional spice coarse ground pork/beef sausage. A strong after taste will keep you licking your lips and stuffing your face. Little grease. No sauce needed at all. Sauce: Very Good. The sauce has great flavor by itself. Its tangy and unique. However, I thought it was a little overpowering and masked the great flavor of the brisket and ribs. It works really well with the bold spice sausage. Get it on the side. read more
