Lakes hills and…read moretrails The Princess Beach Conservation Area is a lovely parcel of land that includes a beach on fresh water Scrago Lake and pleasant trails that branch off into the woods in all directions. Most of the trees are pines so the hiking is very soft because of the pine needles, and the smell of the pine trees and ocean mixing together is wonderful. Scrago Lake is a whole lot warmer than the always cold as @#$% direct ocean beaches of Cape Cod Bay and usually much, much calmer. A nice place to bring the family and little kids when you don't want them to drown, get washed out to sea, or get eaten by giant kraken. There is a fee for parking cars during the summer but if you happen to know someone in the area they'll probably have a sticker and you can bum a ride with them. There is no charge if you bike or walk and in the off season you can park anywhere you want. A lovely and peaceful little area that is a very pleasant place to explore, take a short and easy hike or perhaps do some swimming. A great place to spend some time and energy no matter what the season.

Cape Cod is a special place with a huge amount of natural diversity. The "Elbow" of the Cape is…read moreone of my favorites. This was actually my first visit to the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge. It was a short weekend and a beautiful Saturday in February, while the majority of New England was getting drenched. Sunday, the Cape was in line for that drench; and it did! So we knew Saturday had to be our outdoor day. I located the Monomoy Trail on my "AllTrails" app. The head of the trail can ONLY be accessed on the down sides of a HighTide. So checked my other app "Tides Planner" and we were in luck. The high tide was supposed to peak around 14:00. It was 12:00 and we took a sidewalk hike around Chatham until 14:30. Grab the car, drove over to the trail head. Along the way we checked out Chatham Light House and took a long look at the seals sunning on the sand bars below. Once at the trail head, NOAA has a really cool meteorology facility (nerdy I know, but read the information board - science). By this time it was 15:00 or so. The water was pulling back from the stone embankment revealing the sand trail. Over land isn't possible due to private properties. The looping trail was clear marked and about 1.3 miles. About a third of a mile down the beach the trail loop splits, over beach or to a moderate upland wooded section. We chose the wooded for a change. Along the way are more information boards and numbered posts for a self-guided tour. Eventually, we looped around back to the sand banks and dropping tide. Simply beautiful every step of the way in 360 degrees. If you visit, pay attention to posted signs to be on the lookout for horseshoe crabs (alive or expired) with an ID Tag which can be reported to the Maryland Fisheries Department (yes, another nerdy science thing).

The path itself is in great condition. It is shaded for almost all of the section we did. The pavement is mostly smooth - any bumps from roots underneath are spray painted yellow so you see they are coming. On the section we rode, the sides are not overgrown so there is room to move over for others passing. Other riders and users were all friendly and respectful- ringing bells or announcing their approach. We rode about 7 miles East from our parking spot, taking a nice break for lunch at Seymour Pond. Some of our party went swimming! We were all thankful for the plentiful bike racks, many benches, and a clean porta-potty. This was definitely a highlight of our time on Cape Cod.

A few tables are available but with no shade. You are also next to a dog park, hiking trails, basketball courts, baseball fields, and tennis courts. There is something for the entire family. Picture a lovely summer night when the park is filled with families sitting on blankets, dancing, balloons, after a visit to the nearby Candy Manor and a live band playing for 90 minutes. I've been coming to Chatham since I was a baby and the BEST thing about this particular park is the free band concerts that are held here. According to the Chatham Band website, they just finished up their 85th year of performing concerts. The bandstand is named after Whitney "Whit" Tileston, who was one of the popular band leaders and the one I remember the most from my childhood. Whit passed away back in 1995, so it's nice to see this memorial to him! There is a small parking lot next to the bandstand, by the Impudent Oyster, but that will likely be filled when in season. If you don't mind a walk, I recommend parking behind Ben Franklin or by Yankee Ingenuity. The park is kind of quiet most of the year, but it's a nice place to take a break when you are strolling through this quaint New England town. There are some benches spread throughout the park. Thankfully, the town has added a building adjacent to the park with public restroom facilities.
