If I were more of a mountain bike enthusiast, this would be an oasis. Even just walking and hiking around, the many twisting, undulating trails proved interesting and exciting (though I was constantly looking over my shoulder, waiting to get run down; people on bikes get entitled, y'know...). Knowing the history of the racecourse, it is astonishing - and maybe a testament to the work of the forest preserve - how little this place resembles what it once was. Aside from pavement, which you might as well just assume was a paved path, and the big fuel silo, this place once again belongs to nature.

It goes from North Avenue all the way up to Wisconsin. Anyone who is a big biker and wants to do long distance should check out this trail. Highly recommend for biking enthusiasts! Just a heads up, there are no water fountains along the path. Some of the spots can be tricky to figure out when crossings busy intersections and trying to figure out where the trail meets again at certain sections. After some rain…read morethe wooded areas are thick with mosquitoes and you really cannot even stop there for a moment as they will descend on you immediately and bite you ferociously. There are relatively long stretches 4 to 6 miles between road crossings and farther south the trail follows the river more closely and there are underpasses under the roads so you don't have to worry about crossing traffic or even getting off of your bike. There are plenty of access points to the trail along all of the major roads going east west near interstate 94 north of Lake Cook Road. There are a few out houses and in some rest areas there is running water and flush toilets. There are quite a few benches along the trail, many in those wooded areas but they're also quite a few out in the open sun as well so you can avoid the mosquitoes. After two or three days of strong rains however the trail can get a little bit of a washboard affect in the low-lying areas and a lot of the gravel moves into pockets and can make it hard to get through if you don't have wide tires.

I'm not sure, so I looked up a different trail using my AllTrails app and it took me over to this one. It was a very nice little trail with some beautiful scenery. Although, there was some construction happening, it was very nice. We started on a trail through some large trees. I could imagine it will be gorgeous in the fall. This trail took us along a river, which led to a large waterfall with rushing water. I love the sound of rushing water! We then went around a large lake to make the loop complete. Overall, I thought it was a very nice hike and I would do it again!

That may be so for an experienced riders, but I would recommend riders to have a solid technical base before riding these trails. I used to do a lot of Mt. bike riding back in college, but have been away from it for a long time focusing on road riding. This was a great trail for getting back in the swing of mountain biking. The trails really kept our interest and provided a good number of challenges. There is plenty of parking at Crystal Ridge. Trail is fairly new and not too well known yet, so it was not crowded. Condition obviously varies with the weather. If there is one thing that needs improvement, I would say that the trails could be marked better. There are markings at most intersections, but often times you can go for quite a while without seeing one. Hats off to the Metro Mountain Bikers for all of their hard work on the trail! Overall pretty easy terrain in my opinion and mostly flat with some small ups and downs. The trails dual as mountain bike trails so be on the lookout as you may need to step aside. I had to do this a free times but if it was busier it may be a bit of a distraction and impact your hike some.

It's a cool little hidden spot, that's for sure. Now the cool stuff. The Garden is where part of the famous Chicago Riverview Amusement Park was. My Grandparents had their first date at this historic spot so I'm all about it. It operated from 1904 to 1967 and was home of the 1st parachute ride and 1st suspended roller-coaster. Really it was an ahead of its time place for Chicagoans back in the day. Well legend had it that some of the original bits & pieces from the amusement park have been incorporated into the park. I took some pix and can't help but believe these whispers. If you're into dirt biking, this will totally be your jam. Quite a bit of shade and lots of woodpeckers as you might expect. Plenty of parking right off of Rt 59. Not the Elsen's Hill side off of Gary's Mill. This side is the neglected stepchild of the Dupage Country Forest Preserves in my opinion.

The park consists of a wooded area laced with crisscrossing dirt mountain biking trails. Get ready to bust a glute because the hills here are steep! But the pooches will have fun; they love getting to charge up and down the gravel hills. The park seems to be seldom utilized; on several trips here we only ran into a pair of mountain bikers once and never any other other hikers/dogs. Don't look for official signage or a parking lot because you won't find it. There is plenty of street parking available on Steven's St. and there are random trail entrances along that side of the park.
