Needs to work on customer service as mentioned they act like you are bothering them when you walk in their shop

Best customer service and attention to detail around! my bike ( which wasn't purchased there) received a tune up and when I dropped it off they inspected it asked if anything was an issue- they also noticed the seat was not on correctly which they fixed. They had a large selection of bikes on the showroom floor and the place was buzzing with customers. I know they have been around in business for decades and this was my 1st visit. we will be customers FOR SURE!! the tune up was perfect and quick and the price was spot on!! thanks B&G read more

I needed help finding the right bike seat to accommodate an older rider and a seat that would adapt to the bike. Great results and customer service. I recommend B & G! read more

Great services and truly looks out for the customer. Never feel that I'm being hustled

I needed a tubeless tire put onto my Segway scooter. I already had the tire, they just needed to put in on the rim. I talked to a lady at the front desk that seemed unenthusiastic to help me. I asked if they could put on the tire and she said 'I don't know' I asked how long it would take she said 'I don't know' I asked how much it would cost and she snapped 'leave it here and we will call and let you know' I figured she was having a busy morning so I left my Segway. A week later I got a call from the shop. The person on the phone said it was ready to pick up. No mention of cost, apparently they just went ahead instead of calling with a time and cost estimate like I was expecting. When I went to pick up the scooter I mentioned to the person behind the desk (same person as the first day) that I was disappointed that I didn't get an estimate of time and cost. She said 'That's not how we do things' I said that would have been nice to know how you do things before I dropped of my scooter. She got snippy with me about how long they have been doing business and how it's never been a problem before. So I paid my bill and will be on the look out for another bike shop. If you're in the market for a bike and customer service and polite employees matter to you I would look elsewhere. They did have a very nice technician I met and their selection was quite large. Other than that 2/5 stars. read more

It is ashame that this place no longer fixes bikes, but at least I only wasted 4 weeks of my time. They were always so good through the years that I lived in the area, but things have gone downhill unfortunately. They don't seem to know anything about fixing things, but if you are in the market for anything overpriced, than B&G is the place to go!! At least they are nice and the dog is adorable. Ended up taking my bike to Race Pace in Grayslake and they fixed it in 3 days and under the estimate. According to RP, I am not the only unfortunate person to have my property kept for weeks with nothing done on it. #BubbaGump read more

This is my second time bringing my bikes to B&G for repair and I could not be happier. They are friendly, very reasonably priced and the repair work was good. I would highly recommend this small, independent shop for both bike purchases and any form of repair. Jeff R. read more

I'm in the market to purchase a nice bike so my fiance and I went to B&G Cyclery. When we walked in, we were never acknowledged or greeted. We were in there for a good 10 min before we walked out. So they just lost about $700. Will never go there again. read more

I have multiple bicycles repaired from the BGC team and have always been satisfied with the quality of work. Had a Trek 4300 never been tuned and giving me issues and brought to them and felt as it was a better then it was when it was new. Keep up the great work. BGC. read more

The pandemic had a major impact on bikes. We looked around 15+ bike shops in and around Chicago trying to find what we needed. B & G was the most helpful and friendly of them all. Great place and people. Will keep coming back. read more

Someone PLEASE tell me there is another cycle shop in this area. I have to say that B&G gets the award for the WORST service for any business in the chain o' lakes area. I've gone there many times--even bought my Trek mountain bike there because they are so close to my house and I can walk home if I drop off my bike. But every time I've had to have the bike serviced they've treated me like they're doing me a favor taking my money. A year or so ago I had to guilt them into finally taking the time to fix a shoddy job they'd done on my bike a few months before. And when I came in to pick the bike up the woman wouldn't give me a straight answer about what I'd have to pay or not pay or if they'd even fixed anything. She just kept saying, "I don't know. I don't know." Really? 'Cause it's your shop lady and if you don't know who does? One exception: Matt the mechanic is really great. If only someone could take him and move him to another shop where the staff is warm and friendly it would be a hat trick. As it is now I wonder why they went into the bike business to begin with because they sure don't give the impression that they like it. Meanwhile, I'm looking for another shop to give my business to. I've"ve needed a back tire for months now and I've refused to go back to these people to get it changed. read more

I'm giving them two stars because they have a decent selection of accessories/components, they had lots of kids' bikes, and the saleswoman was attentive even though I walked in 20 minutes before closing time. Unfortunately, everything else about my experience was not confidence-inspiring. The sales technique, instead of actually trying to help me find the right bike, was focused on 1) badmouthing brands other than Trek, 2) badmouthing other bike shops in the area, 3) lying about sales tax rates in other towns. In that order. Only after we got through these three speeches did we move toward actually finding out what I was looking for in a bike and fitting me for a frame. I was disconcerted that the only fitting she did was standing height over the top tube. She didn't bother to ask how my riding posture on the pedals was, or inquire about my reach to the handlebars. This bothers me because there's a lot more to ride comfort and efficiency than where the crossbar lands in your crotch. Lastly, their pricing wasn't very competitive. I shopped five bike stores in total, and I wasn't wowed by any of them. However, I will say that of the four OTHER shops, none of them trashed another store or another bike brand, and all of them spent all their time on finding the right bike for me. B&G is the only store that made a point of trash talking. As it turned out, Libertyville Cyclery (George Garner Cyclery) had the right bike for me in stock, so that's where I put down my dollars. The most helpful sales person by far, though, was at Village CycleSports in Arlington Heights. For the record, I bought a Specialized Sirrus Sport, which basically made every other hybrid/road bike I looked at feel like a toy. read more

Shopping by reviews is something which I hold to a high standard when trying to find a place to do business with. That is the first step to getting me in the door and it didn't start out good from the beginning. It only goes to show that if other people had a bad experience most likely you will to. I learned that the hard way! My wife was doing me a favor by stopping into B & G and saw some bikes that I might be interested in. When she called to tell me that the store had some bikes I went to Google right away to find out what the reviews where of this place. Seeing is that it was only rated with 2.5 stars I was skeptical but thought if I had passed by I would go in and take a look. I expect prompt service from store employees and that is probably the ONLY nice thing to say about this place. It went down hill from there. As I began to look at the selection of bikes which was decent, I was not in any position to buy that day as I had just started to look around. I was asked questions about the style of biking I like to do and what I'm currently using so I could tell that they had knowledge of the products. The owner... I think Cindy is her name but I can't remember informed me they had a bike coming in that was being discontinued but there was one coming into the store. The reason this bike appealed to me was due to the trigger shifters rather than the grip shifters which is what I have used for years. I was interested so she took down my information. When I got up to the counter the questions extended beyond just a name and number which kind rubbed me the wrong way but after providing all my information she said that will be 506 and change for the bike. I said... wait what? she said 506 for the bike. My response, "Why do I have to pay for the bike now?" which she was quick to say, "custom ordered bikes need to be paid in full before we order them." An employee behind the counter, mind you, said " but he didn't custom order the bike you already had it on order!" At this point her husband comes up and has a very desturbed look on his face, almost as if he was about to drop a load in his pants. He turns and asks me, " Do you want the bike, how far do you live and can you get her the day it comes in?" I'm now on the defensive as you can imagine because it's just mind boggling to me that someone thinks I will pay for something I didn't order. AND the fact it was 500+ dollars no thanks! I took my business elsewhere to a place that actually cares about the customers! I received a phone call 3 weeks later from B & G when the owner says, "your bike is ready for pickup, do you still want it?" My reply "absolutely not, your customer service is horrible and I've already told everyone I know to avoid your shop at all costs" We exchanged some words and she was eager to tell me that she lost sales on the bike for two months since she was holding it for me! Yeah of course you did, you expect people to pay for something before they get it when THEY DIDN'T SPECIAL ORDER IT TO BEGIN WITH!. I told her I thought it was ridiculous that she would expect me to pay for something in advanced especially a bike when I'm looking around. If your looking for a new bike, service or any bicycle related products, avoid at all costs! If there was a way to give a zero star rating it would have replaced the 1 star but that is the only way to give a review and keep customers informed read more

Last year we had purchased a bike for my daughters 8th grade graduation, she had been eyeing this bike for months beforehand, and would not let us pass the shop without making us slow down to look at it through the window, she was in love! Needless to say she was absolutely thrilled when we surprised her with it the night of graduation. Nothing made her happier as when she was riding, she has a serious passion for it. This becomes part of my review because of the unfortunate happenings a few months later. The bike was stolen and my daughter was completely heartbroken. A few months after that we had spotted the thief, riding her bike and chased him down, and then called the police, only to find out that the serial numbers were not a match, although we knew it was hers, we couldn't prove it. The officer threw it in the trunk and drove off...I honestly have never seen my daughter so hurt, she was devasted...the bike was taken from her once again. Our last hope was to talk to the staff at B & G to see if there was anything else that we could do. Everyone there was very sympathetic and spent a very good amount of time looking up serial numbers, calling previous customers that had purchased the same style bike, and explaining our situation while requesting a confirmation of their serial numbers. Come to find out that the numbers on her bike had been altered and my daughter was given her bike back, which she insists on keeping right next to her bed at night lol Bottom line is B & G went above and beyond what I had expected of them, they understood our situation and did everything they could to assist in the safe return of my daughters most prized posession and that meant the world to us, and more so to her. Ya I will say, bad bad bad service. The owner, yes the owner, when asked a basic question by a customer responded with the look of disgust. Recently purchased two bikes from B&G one of which they had still in a box and they would start to build ASAP and to call back within a few days to pick up. Called back and was told two people were on a waiting list Since last fall for that bike I was to pick up and they had priority, Cindy who was assisting me was of little help and completely overwhelmed, could not remember our conversation or the particulars of my transaction, she was dismissive and treated me as if I were lucky they even picked up the phone. I was told "there are no bike for sale in America, and if I was dissatisfied good luck somewhere else" . As a result I returned my bike, which I actually liked and canceled the other order, which she couldn't figure out how to refund on there computer. I appreciate all the small businesses out there working hard but I just couldn't support them because of this experience. I rarely write reviews but I've also never been treated so poorly as a customer. Hope your experience is better. read more

Took my bike over to B&G this spring for a long-overdue tune-up. The owner greeted me promptly, determined what I needed, and quickly provided an estimate of cost... along with sharing (and explaining!) her recommendations for new tires my bike needed. Like I said: "overdue". We agreed on work to be done and I was given a "Will be ready by..." date. I picked up my ready-to-ride (and nicely cleaned) bike on the day I was promised, with no "Oh by the way..." surprises on the invoice. Had my sweet ride back in shape, and B&G had another satisfied customer! Definitely appreciated the extensive brochure and information displays too! The owner IS a bit "matter-of-fact", and direct in speaking, which is apparently "off-putting" to some customers used to being fawned-over elsewhere, whereas I greatly appreciated getting right to what I needed to know. YMMV. Tempted at first to go 4-stars due to an out-of-date website, but figured that service was the most important part of the experience, and for THAT I was completely satisfied. read more

No stars. Yelp forces you to add at least one. Horrible customer service. The lady made it seem like I was bothering her by walking into her store. I didn't even get a chance to look around since the response that I received from my first question was very short and so cold. I was planning on making a purchase but ended up walking right out. I'd rather take my money elsewhere. I'm not sure how/why these people are still in business. Will never go back. read more

They never even asked if I wanted to buy a bike, so I walked out. I gave 1 star as courtesy. Went back, in hopes that the bad reviews would have at least changed their ways. Well, guess not, the lady still acts obnoxious and does not know anything about bikes. Just wondering why I have to give this place a star, when they don't deserve one. read more

B & G Cyclery not only has an excellent selection of bikes for all ages, they truly provide their customers with excellent service! Outstanding service and great selection. What a bike store should be. They want to get you into the CORRECT bike, not just any bike that is your favorite color. Their service is great too. I used to work at B&G when I was 15 yrs old. And Bob sponsor me when I raced BMX for years, even came to a couple race's. I also purchased his daughter's race bike which I customized and raced myself. That was 26 yrs ago, Thanks for everything Bob! Recently I revisited B&G to purchase a road bike and Bob and Nikki were still there. They kind of remember me, but no big deal I was there to get a bike. I ended up purchasing a carbon fiber Trek which Bob helped me pick out and gave me a great deal. This bike shop is 3 minutes from my house, but I dread going in there and giving my business to them. A long time ago I brought them a bike with a broken front derailleur, and was sold one that never worked right. I ended up replacing it with one that did, which obviously means that this shop cost me money. Recently I went in with a broken barrel adjustment nut, and was told that I would have to buy a whole new shifter. I thought this was BS so I left, and went to a shop that I trusted. The mechanic handed me an adjustment nut for free, and I walked out. Simple. None of the friends that I've talked to about the shop have ever had a good experience there. One friend said that he bought his first bike there and was sold an inferior bike even though he specifically told them that he'd be riding the hardest trails he could find. In less than a season he'd had to replace a number of components, and feels that the shop simply tried to get a bike out of the showroom. Another friend that has lived in the area all his life said that when he recently bought his son's bike B&G didn't even cross his mind. B&G's customer service is hot and cold. One lady is genial but her bike knowledge is limited. One lady seems like she has to force herself to fit the "customer friendly" role that she wasn't designed for, and even though her bike knowledge is more extensive, she's the one who tried selling me the new shifter. They pride themselves on being family run, but it seems to be a business that the family was saddled with. My opinion is that they have no real passion for riding and you should look to another shop. read more

B and G is amazing! My husband and I did some serious investigating prior to purchasing bikes. We didn't know anything about bikes so needed help from the floor up. We went to 5 stores in the Lake County area over the weekend and this one offered the best customer service by far! Sydney (or Cindy?) was amazing. She took the time to find out what types of bikes would best fit our lifestyle and showed us all the different offerings. Other stores said "look around and let me know if you have any questions." She did a great job explaining the features and benefits to us. She helped make sure we got the right bike for what we needed--she didn't try to pressure or up-sell us on features we wouldn't use. We will be using this store for all our upcoming biking needs going forward. I would recommend this bike shop to my friends if they want excellent customer service and expertise. read more

i agreed with the two previous post....the customer service in the shop is horrible...the ladies in there are so quick to sale you anything and rack up the charges....I had a quote from them for installation that would cost me $50 dollars to change the housing on my bike even though I have my own parts....in addition i would have to leave the bike there for 2 weeks...Instead i purchase a friend's cable cutter and put the housing on which took me 20 mins to do...the folks there works like a car mechanic trying to scare ppl instead of being upfront about it. I guess if you don't know much about bike they will scare you in paying more but do your homework before bringing your bike in. Now this happened over a month ago-I went in telling them I was just getting back into riding after over 10 years. I let them know I needed their help in purchasing a new cassette for rims that were given to me and asked if they could true the old rim. After "dropping" it on to show me how easy it was to put the cassette on the new rim, I left to get to work on it. Only to find out they sold me the wrong one and it was missing a spacer and two gears. I had to go back 4 times to get parts they should have given me to begin with or told me I needed at the start. When it was all said and done, I had spend $130.00 in parts (including a seat). So $90 is actual parts and the bike didn't work right. Ah and here is the catch....."we can take care of all of that in a tune-up which is only $70.00". So, they knew I was getting back into this and was a bit clueless. I asked them to set me up with everything I need-on the first visit. After coming in 4 more times, buying parts and asking advice for things they should have given me to being with, I had to pay the additional $70.00 for the tune-up to get the bike running. And it still is not where it should be. It slips when I change gears, the handle bars were crooked and turned upward, the seat was loose and tilted to the side. What a disaster. They should have taken care of me and instead they took advantage of me. I will never go back. Ever. read more
