I've been wanting to get out on the water in NY and I'm so glad I found Brooklyn Sail, as it was such a perfect way to spend the afternoon. Ian, the owner and captain, was wonderful, the boat was very comfortable and roomy, and the skyline views from the water can't be beat. I'm definitely planning to take another trip with Ian this summer and would highly recommend a sail to anyone - whether local or visiting!

I booked a sail on October 21st as a birthday gift for my boyfriend and we can't wait to go again with friends next season! We were both born and raised in NYC but have never seen Manhattan from such an incredible perspective. Prior to our sail I communicated with Ian via text and he was extremely informative & pleasant. We met Andrew (our captain) at the marina for our 5-7:30 pm cruise and it was seamless from then on. We were on board with two other couples and it still felt spacious and intimate on the boat! I packed a small cooler however, there were drinks available for purchase on board and PLENTY of amazing photo ops. If you're looking for a unique date night or activity with friends/ family I would definitely recommend a trip Brooklyn Sail.

I was looking for a special way to celebrate my daughter's 21st birthday with a few friends and what a spectacular experience! Our experience was heavenly! Captain Ian was both very knowledgeable and friendly. We were able to sit toward the front and witness breathtaking views. We brought food and drink which also made the experience fun. I plan to book the night sail when I return to visit my daughter. This was an experience we will never forget! Thank you, Captain Ian!

Wow, what a fantastic evening on the Enchantress. Six of us Brooklynites went out sailing with Ian and had the most magical time. The boat is beautiful, and Ian is really nice and makes sure everyone feels safe and comfortable. I can't wait to do it again. Highly recommended.

It's not what I thought it might be…read morepotentially, but once I experienced the natural limitations of imperfectly smooth water, I realized it could not be better. We had great weather (that's free!), friendly and safe guides, and a harbor that seemed uncrowded enough. We went on a Thursday, so the day ferries were busy moving commuters around, but we were the only personal watercraft on the water and we encountered a manageable number of NYFD boats, fishing boats, and luxury boats, I would only expect better if I were willing to (1) improve my own ride by becoming a jet ski expert, and (2) get on my own personal custom tour (which I did not pay for or set aside the time for). I also realized what folly it would be for a passenger to take video while moving at tour speed. You could do it, but the video would be bouncing all over the place and you might also lose your passenger after a rough wave. You would need that for full-time video, as the guides are paying more attention to safety and only taking pictures after they pause the tour. The one-tour gets you the meat of the harbor views - from up around 34th St of Manhattan and a view to the Empire State Building, to the Financial Center, Jersey City views, Lady Liberty, the Brooklyn Bride (and very close to the Williamsburg) and the South Street Seaport. It's great. Covering this ground and having any time for pictures requires speed. At one time, I think I was up to 45 knots in spurts, but generally just over 30. This will bang you around at times unless you're pretty skilled and have excellent throttle control. Mind you, I found my jet ski to have a very "tight" throttle as I describe it. It was like a small version of the brake on a ten-speed. I needed a strong tension to hold it, and changing position under high tension seemed to let it move too much. The jet ski would lurch. If they can get smoother throttles (can you get some like motorcycle throttles), that might make the riding less challenging. I paid for the pictures and got some. I wanted more pictures, but time is limited and these guys have to put awareness (safety) first and then progress on the tour second. I would suggest if you want a lot of photos, hire them for a private tour or a longer tour and you'll get more pictures. My wife is a real non-adventure/non-athletic person. She says she was literally praying to God before we even got there. Then she kept telling me to slow down. I can't blame her. I was surging and stopping, especially in the first 20-30 minutes as I got the hang of it. This experience can be a challenge for some who are fearful of everything. If they are like my wife, they eventually realize they won't die and it's actually safe as long as you are mindful of the surroundings. Of course, the guides do their part to hold you before traffic crosses, but sometimes you're widely spaced and you must use your own good judgment not to cut in front of the 30-foot luxury liner that for heading to open waters.

As US Sailing certified instructor and Star Sailor League's Crew, I have volunteered as instructor on board and I have personally seen pepole unable to correctly start the engine or uncapable to face a 10 knots wind in order to get back to the dock, and before the sailing session, the only concern of Steven, the Directors of Sailing, was to ask crews about the price of an eventually broken equipment or the exact sunset time (it looks to be so relevant if someone fails to correctly remeber it, and this means he wants the exact time reported on some smartphone's apps he only knows). This sounds ridiculous to me! Therefore, the way of teaching is quite confusing and not focused on the right things to do on board, not following a logical pattern. The staff, starting from the Director of Sailing, claim itself to be top-notch sailors, but if you are looking for rigorous racing please take a look to the Long Island Sound or Oyster Bay and you will find much better clubs and probably for a cheap price! Please stay away from these club in particular, but also from the other ones in NYC, if you can.

New sailors, whether they are racers or cruisers, have many opportunities to get on the water, improve their skills and try new things. I enjoy mentoring and not only do I get a chance to help people become better sailors but I receive top level coaching well above my skill set. As a racer I appreciate that the club fleet is evenly maintained, the boats are rotated every week, there is a program to recruit and train people interested in racing, there are debriefs and coaching to make the fleet more competitive, great RC and a culture that is supportive rather than cutthroat. We have a great time on the water and off. One of the main attractions of the club for me is that it is under the direction of Stephen Yip. His decades of experience as a racer, PRO and instructor and his dedication and professionalism make this a top notch sailing venue. I've had the good fortune to receive coaching from him in several of the Saturday races that are designed to improve the racing program and that coaching has greatly improved my Thursday race results - last night we got a first in fleet and a first overall. In the first Saturday race I participated in he put someone on my team who had never raced before who said that "racing was her worst fear", she improved as a novice spinnaker trimmer under his coaching while I improved as an experienced driver, the entire team had a lot of fun and everyone has been back for more. Having a program like this that mixes novices with experienced racers and coaches makes racing fun for just about everyone at any level.

Kayaking in New York's Jamaica Bay? YES, it is possible!…read more First time kayaking in my life instill intense fears of capsizing vessel, loosing a paddle, and of course further intensify my fear of drowning but these fears (except for the last) minimized to mere illusions at the conclusion of my newest adventure. Kayaking!! Launching from Paedergat Basin into open ocean waters of Jamaica Bay for a mere two miles stretch (four miles total round-trip) was a purifying escape from life's daily grind of the daily deal. This kayak water trail passes under the Belt Parkway, which amusingly as kayakers, we were moving faster than automobile traffic!! Staff are extremely welcoming, attentive and compassionate to first timers, and above all informative instructive to calm first timers. All in all Sebago Canoe Club's staff operate as a cohesive team to help kayakers should there be man overboard from capsize. I was instructed with the proper technique to board a kayak vessel and how to paddle which include body formation, not strictly arm movements. We kayaked into shore unreachable by vehicle, nor bicycle, nor canoe boat, nor by foot where we had a ten minute break for swimming. Rather than swim, like most normal people, I collected several sea shells serving as a memory of this happy moment. I've learned the logistics of a kayak vessel as oppose to canoe, or row boat which the main unique difference is the ability to afloat on very shallow waters which our group were in mere four feet later downgraded to two feet. We passed by marshes on the outskirts of Jamaica Bay as I've often wonder how to be in proximity of marshes. I only wished for my camera to capture these happy moments. After thirty minutes of continuous kayaking into Jamaica Bay, all of my life's griefs and struggles were dispelled as I was truly relaxed at peace. Tandem kayak vessels are available for two people which I was in it with a friend. I dare to be alone in a kayak vessel as a first timer in conjunction with my fore-mention fears. Life preservers are available as well as paddles which are included in the kayak adventure. Lockers are available which the unisex changing room inhabits. Two nasty outhouses are the source for facilities, do not expect a royal Porcelain Throne as this is the great outdoors!! The pier is very well maintained without fault. At the conclusion, we all contributed to the cleanup by hosing all kayak vessels and life preservers to remove salt water including docking at bay. No spray showers are available to rise off salt water but hoses are readily available. Admission is a reasonable $10.00 cash or check per person with a signed written consent for liability. Yes, I would do it all again in a heartbeat!
