The Broken Spoke is an Austin icon. It is nestled in between two giant condos on Lamar. The business held their ground and refused to sell out when all of Austin was being slowly replaced by condos and other modern buildings. It is "one of the last true Texas dancehalls". Parking is somewhat challenging but if you are able to locate a spot, it is worth the challenge. When you first walk in to the dining area, there is usually a band playing live music to enjoy. I had a chance to finally try their famous chicken fried steak. Although the price point has jumped it is still fairly reasonable in comparison to other options. The chicken fried steak is served with a baked potato and salad. When I ate in the restaurant they had suspended dining service which was a bit inconvenient. You can order at the bar and then they call your name to come pick up your order. The food was worth the extra effort. They have a variety of other food options on their menu. The staff was friendly. In the back of the building they have the dance hall that usually has a band playing live music as well. They offer dance lessons throughout the week and I hope to participate at some point. There is usually a cash only cover charge to get into the dance hall. I did get a chance to peak in to check it out. It is like going back in time in his honky tonk dance hall that always has entertainment to enjoy. I hope to come back for dance lessons soon.

Rating: 3.5/5 (wish we could do 1/2 stars on here!) I've been wanting to come here for the longest time, and finally got that chance this past Friday. My dad and I arrived just around 7:30pm (around 7:40pm after finding parking in the nearby strip mall) when they recommend you to show up to get a spot in Terri's class. We got one of the tables by the railing & quickly ordered drinks (I later found out I ordered at the bar with Terri White herself!) The dance hall room gets more crowded as the night goes on, even after the class starts. I figure those folks aren't joining for the class but are there for the music that starts later & free rein dancing. I was shocked at how crowded the class was, and feel that they should cap the attendance so folks have room to move around & better express themselves. I didn't come with lofty expectations and I think that's the way to go. I'm familiar with Southern culture, having been in ATL for 6 years and visited Nashville before. I do agree that Terri's "comedy routine" for the first half of the class was too long, but I personally found it entertaining. It's not for everyone. She made fun of me for ordering a Dirty Shirley.... It sucks not having a dance partner, and the fact 99% of the men who show up come with their partners so as a single gal it's likely you'll end up with a fellow lady. Despite these comments, I still largely had a good time & would come back with friends or a future boyfriend. I learned a new way to do the Cotton-Eyed Joe, got teasingly smacked on the bum by Terri herself, and a selfie with the queen:) You can say what you want about the Broken Spoke, but it's still definitely an Austin institution that everyone should go to at least once.

We came to the broken spoke for the two step lessons. Is the place a little older? Yes. A little run down, also yes. But was it a great time? Absolutely! The woman that did the lessons was lively and so much fun! Everyone was smiling and enjoying themselves. It got packed with people and had such a diverse group of people from small kids, teens and even the grandparents. It was sweet to see the local teens there doing something so fun and different. It was truly an experience.

Ok, you *do* have to go to the Broken Spoke for the authenticity. It's a Historical Landmark for a reason, so you have to go. Make sure there's a solid band playing. (Dale Watson is Five out of Five Stars.) While the bar itself takes credit cards, the cover charge (for the band) was cash only. The music had a timelessness to it, it could've been any time from 1964 (when it opened) to the present. Willie Nelson started off here. We ain't fancy but we're damn sure country.' - Ginny Peacock, the daughter of the founder James White. Didn't try the food, and the Lone Star is cold. Tough to find a spot to sit, but be sure to stop-in regardless.

This is the most iconic honky-tonk I've ever experienced. It's truly a time capsule back to 1964 when it was established. The construction has been left intact, which is what gives it its timeless, authentic charm. The best part is that you get to live in that moment with folks of all ages, including old-timers who have been dancing there since the beginning. Anyone is free to ask anyone to dance. I danced with ladies younger than me, to ladies older than me. Some, I asked to dance, and some asked me to dance. I prefer this kind of honky-tonk to the contemporary style, because the person you dance with doesn't become a stranger after the song finishes. You can chat with them off of the dance floor. Cover charge and drinks are reasonably priced. Next time, I'd like to come here for dinner before proceeding to the dancehall. The restaurant portion in the front appears to be the best way to take in that experience. A few people bring food back to the tables on the sides of the dance floor, but you're basically eating in the dark amidst a crowd that is mostly in dance mode. This place is a local, state, national, and international treasure. I hope it stays that way for all time, so that future generations can enjoy the same magic that has been here for over six decades so far. They don't make honky-tonks like this anymore.

The service sucked. I wouldnt recommend this place to no one. theyre wanna be country. no southern hospitality at all. Ive been to hole in wall with places and they were 5 star experience, compared to this one. Dont waste your money here. i wouldnt even rate a single star here.

Honestly, not sure how the drinks are or how the food is, but this place is phenomenal. I brought a high school sports team here for line dancing lessons, and it was their highlight of the trip. Traci is AMAZINGLY hilarious and genuine and an excellent instructor. I love the decor and can only imagine how this place is full of good times and fun at night.

    Brian Q.

Cool saloon with two stepping lessons! Came with friends having never experienced 2 stepping and the instructor was very descriptive and made sure everyone was comfortable and understood all the moves. Partners were there for those that came alone and it wasn't awkward at all. They also serve some food and of course drinks. The decor was very very Texas and the dance floor was large and there were tables in back to rest or drink and eat. Not a huge parking lot so may have to find street parking.

Ask the Community - Broken Spoke

Do they allow 18 and up this bar?

Its really a 21 and up place since its a bar, but yes.

How big is the dance floor?

I'm not sure the exact dimensions, but you can get about 150 people on it

Can I bring my little sister who's 14? Just for the dance class and dancing

No. This is 18 and up.

Do they allow under 21 but over 18?

Yes, for a small up charge on cover of $3

Are they still requiring masks while dancing now that the mandate is gone?

I went in September 2022 and nobody was wearing a mask

    Is there lune dance lessons?

I have no idea but I can tell you that if you call this place the staff is very friendly and will answer questions

My ID expired, do they check for ID's before entering?

We didn't have to show ID when we went, but we're also in our 50's. Might need an ID for drinks.

Is there still dancing goin on now that they've reopened? Or live country music?

Kind of late, but we were there in Nov and there was dancing with face coverings.

If we go at 9pm will it be too difficult to get in?

Sure, getting in is not as hard as a parking some nights. Getting a ride could be best. Don't forget you will be enjoying cold beer

How old can you be to go dancing there by yourself or with people your age?

You're suppose to be 21 to get into a bar in Texas. But I have seen teens there with 'parents'.

A fine club with a decent bar and an eyebrow raising toilet…read more Obviously your interest in Elysium depends on who they book. I came during SXSW, when clubs usually book bands that are different from what they usually book. So my Japanese showcase would not reflect what you would usually hear at Elysium. But the performance space is attractive. The club is divided into two rooms with just a divider and no wall between the rooms. So you can hear the music from anywhere. If you want to be right next to the speakers at the edge of the stage, you have to be in the main room - not the room with the bar. As I get older, I sit down more. But for most of my life, I was a stage-edge-next-to-the-speaker kind of guy. Only the only thing that would remove me from my favorite place was mosh pit action (Or a sucky band). As I get older, I also look for some kind of wall support to brace myself with one hand while I dance with the rest of me. The Mohawk is ideal for wall support upfront dancing. The Elysium not so much because one wall is mirrored. But you can get in position to do some major dancing. When I was there last, I did just that. * * * Seating options are superb. Both in the stage room and the bar room there are comfy leather sofas that hold three people and a number of other soft seating locations. Unlike many other Austin clubs, it is easy to find a space to sit down and still get the music full blast. At the Mohawk, in contrast, for an indoor concert, if you go to sit down you leave the room with the music, and you only get vague overtones coming through the wall. * * * The bar is pretty good. Their options are limited but their options are well chosen. I was introduced to a George Dickel rye by the bartender that was absolutely first rate. George Dickel is definitely going into my home collection. Outstanding beverages and fine seating allow you to have a fine time at the Elysium Even on a night when the bands are terrible. * * * Your fine time changes if you have to go to the bathroom. * * * If you are a guy, peeing is merely tacky. You go into a semi-gross room where there is a multi-user tank. All the guys pee into the tank. * * * Pooping is another story. The club does not want shenanigans going on in any of the toilet stalls. So they remove the door to the toilet stall. The men's room toilet is fully visible from the front door to the men's room. You are literally pooping in front of the entire world. This is barely one step up from India. In India, many people poop in the streets. Here, you are essentially pooping in the streets Except when you are done you can flush the bad stuff away. I personally am very shy . I definitely do not want to do my business in public. * * * There are people in Austin who love to sh** in public. Put four of them together and you have a band. Bands like that perform all over town, Including at the Elysium.

One of the most attractive performing spaces in Austin…read more If they happen to be booking music that you like, you are made in the shade. * The club is on three levels. The Ground Floor: A larger than usual performance space. Larger than usual because it takes up the entire footprint of the building with no space set aside for seating. If you want to dance or they are packing them in SRO, the square footage is there. Okay - it is not as big as the Concourse Project which has an entire South-of the-Airport Industrial Warehouse to work with. But for downtown, it is huge. * The Mezzanine - This is one place to go if you want to sit down. The space is divided between a) a set of large leather chairs with a pool table in the middle. The pool table area is on an open balcony that lets you hear or even watch the bands from on high. There is a bench with stools right on the balcony edge for semi-comfortable listening to the band below. If I am listening to the music, I will take the leather chairs rather than a stool. Ever try boogie-ing on a stool? Ever get transported to a higher place by the mystic beauty of what you are hearing on a stool? Slapstick moments await. However, it is hard to argue with a leather chair for big time listening. b) the Mezzanine bar with and a bunch of chairs and benches near a bowling alley. ?!?!? on the Bowling Alley. The Great Lebowski never had it so good. If you push the matter, the bar might even be able to make you a White Russian. * The Roof - which has one of the nicest and most comfortable roof sitting areas in Austin. There are places with nicer roof views, but not very many places with as much seating and as much comfortable seating. And yes there is a music stage if management decides they want to mix things up soundwise. Mostly though, this is a perfect place to rest your tootsies if standing listening to bands has become too much for you. It is also the perfect safety place if the band downstairs stinks so much, you need two floors of real estate between you and the abomination on stage. * I can't speak for the quality of the bar. I was here for a German government sponsored SXSW showcase - in this case of all Berlin DJs. Berlin DJs are up there with Ibiza DJs for being the best that electronic dance music has to offer. (That night however, an unknown Austin girl filled in for a missing act - and held her own with the best of Berlin. Suxxy Puxxy. Keep your eyes out for her if you like to dance.) The German government was offering free drinks as part of the motivation for you to come in to German Haus and hear free music. No exotic hard to get German beverages but I was pleased to take the normal stuff they were offering. So how good the bar is or how good the musicians they book are are TBD. * * * I generally find the Mohawk is a hard standard to beat ... So it is hard to get me to shift to other clubs. Still the space offered by the Speakeasy is extremely appealing. It would not take much for me to make an excuse to come back.

I was supposed to go to the afternoon show but it was canceled so we went to the evening show instead. They advised that our tickets were going to be upgraded to the VIP, but when I got inside, my first question was, what is the difference between VIP and regular admissions??? I would have been very upset if I had paid the additional money for the VIP experience. Also, just getting into the door was an experience. Because it looks like it's blocked off, there is a chair out front so you think someone is going to let you in, but what we didn't know is that you had to walk up the flight of stairs to get to the entrance of the club. So we waited outside for about 15 minutes before somebody came downstairs to tell us that the doors were open. When we finally made it in, there was plenty of seating, and you could see the stage from any seat you picked. The show started right on time, and the host warmed up the crowd. Also be prepared to spend some money if you want a drink, each one was $20! The building is older, and the lighting is not great, so it was hard to see those things and think that I paid $30 per ticket. As I continued to watch the show, I learned that there were 3 drag queens. They basically each had 2 sets, where they emulated different artists each set. At the end of the show, they did a combined set. The show lasted the whole hour and if you choose to you could stay for male dancers at no additional cost. The Queen's interacted with everyone in the room. They put on a great show with what they had to work with. They made sure everyone felt special, and they also called out the future brides in the room and gave them secrets to a successful marriage. Overall, it was lots of fun but I don't know if I will go back to this location again just because of the cost and the older building.

I am a married woman so I did not get a lap dance, but there were multiple bachelorette parties there and all of the brides were happy. We specifically asked the manger to tone the lap dance down for our bride because she didn't want anything TOO nasty. They were SO respectful. If they came to give you a lap dance and you said no- they would immediately leave you alone. I would definitely recommend this event for a bachelorette party. We all had so much fun, nobody felt violated and it was perfect for a brides last night out with friends! I have tons of video, but it may be too risky for Yelp to post them!
