If you want to experience a chef made 3 course dining experience at a great price this is your stop! You will have to make reservations or plans early for this experience. For the price of around $40 you get to pick 3 courses, appetizer, entree and dessert plus bread. It was a difficult decision to make but I went with Shrimp & Chorizo empanada, Panang curry short ribs with jasmine rice and naan, and the warm cornmeal financier. My favorite course was dessert with the buttered popcorn ice cream(better than the name) on a honey cheesecake, cranberry and ......caramel popcorn! Such a complex savory experience! I will make coming here be an annual experience. I am inspired that HS students/chef made all this and worked the entire front aspect of the house. The only drawbacks were its acoustic makes it for a very loud atmosphere and our server need more feedback on to refill our beverages and provide more of a dining experience with details and descriptions.

The first visit was not 5 stars. The fancy Italian soda wasn't sweet at all and the menu items were very small portioned. I returned to a completely different situation. The food is served by students of the culinary school in Shawnee Mission Highschool. Just for the experience alone as long as you like the menu is worth it. This visit included a calzone and for dessert as strawberry crepe. The main dish was chicken breast with a sweet sauce. We received a tour and was introduced to the instructor. These students are impressive to say the least. The menu changes a few times a year. They also have a bakery and guest chefs. It's $35. But a good experience.

This might be a cooking school, but their food is quite professional. For $40, you get three courses, and additional bites before and after the courses (e.g. a small saucer of soup, cookie, etc). You can mix and match your courses, as they offer a variety of options per course. I haven't had a bad meal here - depending on what is ordered, the single course can either be filling or not, but it will be distinctly flavorful. The restaurant's ambiance is more upscale than expected, as it is inside of a school district campus. They are only open on Wednesdays throughout the school year, as the restaurant is largely manned by students (and a few instructors / teachers that navigate around). If you are coming to dine, don't forget to bring cash for a tip, as you can't add it to the bill. If there is availability and time, your (student) server will offer a tour of the restaurant and kitchen - take it! It's pretty interesting and insightful.

Apple tatin - delicious

Amazing dinner last night at the Bistro. SMSD students taking it to the next level - meal presentation and service. I have no pic of the entree because I dug in too fast!

Perish the thought...Paying $25 to eat in the school cafeteria. Well, surprise, it wasn't any cafe that I've seen! This is a Technical School that has a beautiful restaurant in it, huge kitchen and bakery and classrooms with high school students serving you and making your food. Ok, I know you're skeptical.......you just HAVE to try it! It's just so amazing. You get to choose 2 soups, salads or apps, one entree and one dessert. Water, Ice tea and Coffee is included. The coffee was to die for! I ordered 2 salads: Scallop salad and beet salad Entree: Swordfish Mediterranean style Dessert: Fruit with some syrup I took several photos, which I'll post soon. The food was such a work of art. It's just like those higher end restaurants, where presentation is everything. Portion size was average for a restaurant that is higher end, but all 4 courses means it's just right and you're full for the rest of the night. We really enjoyed the food and they customized everything to our needs. The food came out rather quick, too. At the end of the night you are offered a tour by the waiter/waitress that took care of you. The student shows you around and you're amazed. If you're from KS, you now know where your 150 million went. It was well spent. This is such an amazing opportunity for the students who need to apply to get into this program and not everyone is chosen. Everyone is happy to be there and they come out as graduates with hundreds of hours of experience. They've graduated some top chefs. The chef/teacher Bob was such a pleasure to talk to. Consider this the next time you want fine dining and don't want to pay for it. We really enjoyed interacting with everyone and plan to become regulars.

Our friends told us about this experience and we had absolutely no idea what to expect. You pay ahead for the dinner when you make your reservation (ours was $25.00 per person). The Bistro is there to raise money for the school system as well as aford the culinary students experience dealing with all aspects of running, managing, and coordinating a restaurant. It was such a great experience! Not only did we have a wonderful server (Jake, you are awesome) who was unabashed at expressing his passion and knowledge of the menu with humour and sincerity, the food was better than the last me we had at the American. I had Mussels that had the slightest kick, then aged steak (which was a perfect medium rare) ... well the menu constantly changes so the rest of it I will just say was a taste experience that could convert me to being a foodie. The subtlety of flavour, the creative uses of ingredients, the ambiance... all equalled a fantastic time. We also got a cool perk - Jake gave us a tour of the school's kitchen and classroom areas.

Love eating here! Always so impressed by the students! The food and service were excellent. Large portions - we were stuffed! Beautiful space. We were seated close to the kitchen where all the food was being prepared and coming out to the diners. So much fun to watch them in action! Be sure to grab some quiche, English muffins, and pastries on your way home.

Wow‼ A culinary school staffed and run by students.. open for coffee, pastries and quiches, soups and salads Mon- Friday and hand made pizza on Fridays! On Wednesday evenings they serve a 4 course gourmet dinner with the opportunity to tour the most amazing state of the art kitchen we have ever seen. The waiters, cooks, hostesses and dishwashers are students - each taking turns weekly to learn skills. It's a great night out. The dinner selections were creative and delicious and the plating was gorgeous! The school has a huge vegetable, flower and herb garden so everything is fresh and seasonal! Plan time to stay and take a tour of the kitchen!

I saw a woman pour a little bit of vinegar into a little paper cup and sip it straight, so in true monkey-see-monkey-do fashion I did the same. My first taste was the White Peach Balsamic. Forget everything you know about balsamic vinegar, stuff this good is on a different plane of existence altogether. Wow! So syrupy and brightly flavored I now understood the glaring lack of bread cubes. Who needs them? The White Peach was like jam. I was instantly thinking of pouring it over ice cream, or ... ? It turned my world upside down. My budget permitted a purchase of just one bottle this trip, but you can rest assured I will be coming back to add to my collection. If you're curious, I chose the Lime Jalepeno Balsamic as my first bottle. All I add is a little oil, salt & pepper and I have a salad dressing that knocks my socks off!

When Donna Kelce listed it as amongst her favorite spots in KC I just knew it was going to be a slam dunk and yet it STILL took me this long to make my way over. All that being said, I have a standing lunch date with a friend on my calendar and after looking at her text that simply said "Hemma Hemma?" I was so excited to give it a try. I was just coming from a meeting near the Plaza so it was a quick jaunt for me, and I was honestly surprised to find that Hemma Hemma is located in Waldo, right on Wornall. Turns out I've driven past it countless times and never even realized it. For a weekday lunch at noon I was a bit worried about parking but I was able to get a really close spot right on Wornall so don't let that deter you one bit. When you walk in it's honestly kind of perfect brunch/lunch vibes. It's sort of like a marriage of a cozy cafe and a chic home kitchen. You feel welcome and relaxed. It's an order at the counter kind of place and I had their pickle fried chicken salad (forgive me for not remembering the official name!). It was divine. I will say it was very crowded when I was in there but there were plenty of seats, mostly because they've used the space well and there is ample room for single diners to sit at a large communal table in the back, which really frees up tables for folks that are there to chat with someone. Aside from all of that the food is great, the folks working are so nice, and I can't wait to return.

While I had high expectations and was excited about the opportunity to learn, I unfortunately encountered several challenges that negatively impacted my experience: Missed the education class. I was a senior trainer for Skillpath many years ago. Perhaps they have turned over a new leaf, but…read morefrom reading other reviews, it appears that they have not. I recall one class where they had me stay in a hotel under renovation on one side of town and another under renovation on the other side for the class sessions. That meant that I taught a lot of classes in very noisy and sometimes dirty environments. Air travel was the same. I kept wondering why my connections were so terrible. Then I found out that they simply chose the cheapest flights. I wondered why it so often occurred that I had to spend all day Sunday getting to a city not too far from Denver, my base. I asked the travel department if they had a cut-off for my time, like for example, not taking a $25 savings if it wasted 5 hours of my time. They would not comment. Once I needed to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances. They said they would look into it. When I called back they said no-one was available. I knew another Senior Trainer of theirs who could do it. When I called him, he said they never contacted him. There were only three of us qualified to teach that class, so this would have taken them two phone calls max to arrange it. What rankles me the most is that these people are getting away with being a 501-c3 charity. I would like to know what the compensation is for each of the top officers. They had a "trainer manager" whose sole credential was a stint as an improv comic. The company decided to get into teaching budgets, and he created the training materials. He had never had a budgeting class, let alone taught one, and had never received training on creating materials. Those were some of the worst I ever trained from. Skillpath people had intense interest in seeing copies of my training materials I used in my own classes. More than once, they sent me copies of training materials that did not carry their logo, and asked me to edit them (for free) for them. I declined. Full disclosure: I am retired from the training field and own no stock and have no interest in any of their competitors. I checked in with them a few years ago, and found that if you factored in travel time, the rate they then paid was below minimum wage. If you do decide to take a Skillpath class, consider buying the trainer lunch. S/he could probably use it.
