Best Yum Cha in Brisbane!…read more We turned up to this restaurant at lunch time on Sunday and it was full and there was a seemingly endless queue. Despite the queue we didn't have to wait long for a table and it was well worth the wait. We think that it was the best yum cha we've had in Brisbane. The servers were friendly and the dishes were all lovely - it was also very reasonably priced. I would certainly be happy to bring my Malaysian-Chinese mum here!! Our search landed us in the center of Chinatown in the Valley, at King of Kings Seafood, a place pretty much the epitome of Chinese restaurants - with the live fish and the big round tables. When we got there at about 1pm, it was actually rather packed. There were groups of families - both Asian and non [I mention this because it may just as well be a gauge to how authentic a restaurant is], and the place remained busy even as we were leaving since the place serves dim sum till late. Also, because there were constantly diners coming in and out, some of the yum cha that was being reeled around was pretty fresh! The food was as expected - decent - but not great. Everything was very standard, and the cha siu pastry was not too bad, but I don't recommend the taro cake (?-), which was way too dry and didn't taste much like taro. The duck that we had was also a bit dry, which disappointed me, since duck is a very forgiving meat. Overall, it was not a bad experience, and the waitresses were very friendly, but it was a bit pricey. We got quite a bit of food and were filled to the brim, but it was a bit over $20 for each of us - and I don't know if I can get used to restaurants here charging for tea per person.

This yum cha (dim sum) place is a fancier version of the ones that have usually been in existence in Brisbane and is packed! I met my god-parents for lunch -- there were 6 of us -- on a Saturday around 11.30am. The place was already buzzing. The booth seating is uncomfortable and awkward. We are boxed in and squished. The steamed dim sum was sub-par.... the dumpling wrappers are mushy and thick. They fell apart the minute I picked them up with my chopsticks. The har gow and the seafood dumplings -- in fact, any of the dumplings that have the same wrapper -- all possessed this terrible wrapper. I don't recommend it. Seen juk guen (beancurd rolls) were really dense with a filling that is almost completely meat and nothing else. Flavor-wise it was fine. Chicken's feet were decent, with the claws cooked to a good consistency so it fell off the bone. The fried items were much better. The woo gok filled with taro was good -- nice and crumbly on the outside and the filling a good consistency. My favorite was the fried radish cake which were little nuggets of perfectly tender radish cake fried to a crispy perfection. The crispy pork belly (siu yuk) was awful. The fat is not rendered through well enough making the pork pieces unpleasant to eat. Service is hit and miss as well. One minute someone is efficient coming around to refill water, and then, nothing even when you ask for it. Maybe I'm comparing it to dim sum places in the US, but it's weird to me that they didn't have Chinese mustard (gai lat) when my son asked for it. The one thing I love about Chinese restaurants in Australia is that they give you soy sauce with slices of hot chile peppers in them. Wish restaurants in the US would offer this to you as a regular condiment.

My friend and I tried 3 or 4 food stalls that ended up already being closed but there was no signs at all to notify people... We finally found a place that was still open named Rice Town. It's on the corner opposite the bar. I believe it's Chinese food. Because they were about to close, they packed it in take away containers. I'm sad because..it was super salty. Like salt laden. It was not crazy bad (MSG?) but to the point you wish you had water to wash the saltiness all down :( I prefer Panda Express 10 times over. It's not a bad place to be I guess when all of the stalls are still open. But the staff should honestly have 'closed' signs available. Staff knew we were in front, but didn't even inform that they were closed till 5-10min later -_- we had to ask them too + this happened at 4 different stalls.

I thought it was Chinese cuisine but turned out it is Japanese. The buns and coleslaw were good. But I'm missing out the high notes of that charcoal grilled pork belly. Okay, I'm sorry that I forgot the name of this stall. But don't worry, the best part of 8 Street-all stalls display the cooked dishes in front of their stalls. And for some reasons, you still cannot find it. Feel free to drop a Yelp message :)) There are so much to explore. So choose a meal critically. But oh well, you can always come back for more meals!

Tonight was their first night being open and I am so excited I got to experience it! The restaurant is located on Gold Coast Highway so parking can be a bit tough, but I was lucky enough to secure a spot. Once we got to the restaurant we noticed there was seating both inside and outdoors. Some of the seating was regular tables while other was high tables/bar chairs. We checked in with the host and were told to wait a moment while he cleared off a high table outside. On my Opentable reservation I mentioned that we had a special occasion however the host had not seen the note. We asked if it were possible to get a regular table and preferably indoors. After a few minutes he gladly escorted us to a nice table. TIP - If celebrating an occasion I now know to call the restaurant to confirm. The host gave us a quick run through of the menu and then took our drink orders, which was just water. Very shortly after our waiter came by and gave a more in-depth explanation of the menu. We decided to order the Prawn Hair Gow, Half Roasted Duck with Pancake and Hoisin, as well as the Dong Po Style Pork Belly. A few minutes after ordering a lady came by (I believe the manager but could have been a waitress) and asked us if we had ordered drinks. I expressed that we were fine with water and she asked if we would like some bubbly to celebrate our occasion. My partner decided to get some and I mentioned how I do not drink. The lovely lady said she could make me a mock-tail that I would enjoy so I decided to try it out. Such sweet gestures! The mock-tail and bubbly (champagne) came out after a few minutes. I have no idea what was in the mock-tail but I believe some sort of watermelon and cucumber juice? Either way it was incredible! So for those that do drink I can only imagine how wonderful their regular cocktails are. Our food came out after a bit of a wait. First was the dim sum which was so warm and had wonderful texture. Next was the pork belly which was within an incredibly delicious sauce. Finally we got the duck which just as amazing as the rest of our food. Throughout the entire dining experience there wasn't a moment where we needed to ask for more water or anything else. The hospitality was simply superb! Every few minutes someone stopped by to check up on us. When it came time for dessert the lovely lady came by to take our order. We were quite full but decided to order the Chocolate Custard Bao with Sesame Ice Cream as that sounded so unique! The dessert came fairly fast and was even more delicious than I could have imagined. After our meal the lovely lady (I really wish I got her name) came by to check up on us and ask about our dining experience. We couldn't rave enough about how wonderful it was. She said that she took care of the drinks and dessert and she hoped we had a great time celebrating. Honestly I wish I could give this restaurant 10 stars as they truly deserve it.
