The service was good and the waitresses were really attentive but I think for the price it was a massive let down. The miso soup was good. The beef tataki was prepared earlier and my partner said it had a roast beef taste to it. The edges were cooked but raw in the middle and cold. Fridge cold. We shared the prawn and vegetable gyoza which tasted like the pastry was stale or suffered some serious freezer burn before being fried. The inside was a bit mushy. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't good had no crunch or crispy to it. I had the Teppan which is tofu and vegetables in a sizzling plate. It came out sizzling and 2 of the tofu pieces were soft and nice and the other 2 were a bit hard and dense. Flavour was acceptable. Way too much onion and not enough other vegetables. My partner had the teriyaki chicken which had large chunks of chicken.. cooked well enough.. the pieces were large so there wasn't enough marinade to go and it was more chicken to marinade ratio... Both our rices came out tepid almost cold instead of hot so I don't think it was fresh. Some of the rice chunks were hard. I think especially at any kind of Asian restaurant. The one thing that should be excellent is the rice and it wasn't. Actually that's probably a good way to describe the evening... it just felt not fresh and I think for a $70 dinner for two, no drinks. The meals should be at least that. We didn't order from the train just the set menus. I definitely won't be coming back and if you come from Melbourne where the Jap food is pretty much always good and at this price point great... be prepared to be let down!

Not that I'm complaining because where it's situated is convenient for me to get to plus there's easy parking. Shinbashi has a $35 all-you-can-eat Japanese BBQ which is always a popular option. I fyou go this route, make sure to try their fantastic wagyu and marble beef. However, my husband and I always splurge on their $99 Signature Selection for two. It includes these tasty additional extras like Bacon asparagus and Bacon rice cakes. There's also this buttery cheese, sweet potato dish which takes about twenty minutes to cook up on the BBQ but is worth the wait. The service here is great. They always remember to refill my green tea and there's this delicious complimentary soup which comes in a teapot that you can easily fill up on and ruin your dinner if you're not careful. If you live further afield, Shinbashi Yakiniku is definitely worth the drive out to Underwood.

Being a Japanese BBQ place you basically cook the meat on the hot plate in front of you and dip in delicious sauces before noming down. Staff are genuinely helpful. There's Japanese rice beer to match, though I didn't see how that was going to be consumed amongst the plethora of meats in front of me. Also good to know - the meat is delicious, because it is marbled with delicious fat. I went on a Tuesday night and it was packed. Defs popular amongst the locals.. Or those who know its there. So man up, make the drive, and give this place a go :)
