And it delivers on that promise of inexpensive yet delicious eats. I had the 'A' set plate of sushi - basically a deluxe nigiri platter - served with miso soup. The fish was fresh and delicious, the rice had good taste, temperature, and texture, and the 'other' toppings - tamago, prawn, scallop, flying fish roe, and salmon roe - were quite tasty as well. Water and tea (both iced and hot) are self serve as are the dining implements. And it's a 'pay at the counter after you've eaten' kind of place. The hostess was kind and helpful...though the service mainly consisted of telling me what (and where) I should be doing on my own. The decor inside the restaurant was perfectly fine...though I would have found eating in the dark, low ceilinged 'alleyway' somewhat depressing. My only complaint is that the miso soup was served at the same time as the sushi...and I don't know if that is how they normally do it or if it was because I entered just as the restaurant opened.

Server pretty much forgot about us throughout the dinner, and forgot our drinks. When delivering the check, he put our drinks in twice. Cocktail my lady friend got tasted like it wasn't made with any alcohol. They didn't acknowledge my birthday at all, except at the end when I mentioned to my friend and my server heard and then they took off a cocktail and half of a sake bottle. But by that time it already felt like I didnt enjoy my birthday dinner. Wanted to give two stars but the food (kingfish roll, seared scallop roll, chicken yakitori, chili garlic edamame, bottle of sake) was so good that I wanted to at least give three stars Loved the soundtrack and decor as well, but service really does make a meal.

Staying at QT, I didn't wish to venture too far tonight, so the hotel's food offerings were on the cards. Japanese has always been (and remains) one of my favourite cuisines and so the local Yamagen was on the cards. The Yamagen menu offered a few tantalising fusion options which are not "normal" Japanese faire, so I decided to go out on a limb and try these. I am so glad I did! I started with the Sashimi Tacos. One word - WOW. Taste and texture were fantastic and an absolute joy. A fantastic fusion take and well worth trying. The crispy pork belly for main was chosen and also just as delicious. The nashi pear base was great and the textures complimented each other perfectly. My only complaint was that there was too little of it, I could have eaten two of these (because they were so delicious, not because of the portion size...) But dessert was also on the cards, and the "Yonuts" were chosen. I am so glad I did. Powdered wake seaweed with fine sugar created a sweet and savoury juxtaposition which perfectly complimented the isolated caramel balls of joy. Oh wow. The wait staff were attentive but not overbearing and the whole experience left me wanting more. I try to dine at different restaurants when interstate, but I will be hard pressed not to come back for take #2 tomorrow evening... Thank you Yamagen for a great dinner - definitely one to savour again!
