The Axe is basically the only bar worth going to in Hagerstown if you're not a redneck. Great food, free live music, good prices.

I recently moved to Hagerstown and was pleased to find a place like the Broad Axe within a couple of miles from home. A clean, comfortable atmosphere with a nice assortment of craft brews on tap. Very reasonably priced menu, with a variety of choices for just about any craving you have. Having been raised in the Midwest, I was thrilled to find the midwest tenderloin on the menu. It was a wonderful taste of home I had not enjoyed in quite some time. Our server was friendly and attentive, and did a great job taking care of us as it was very busy at the time. I've been loyal to The Broadaxe for the last ten years. The current owners saw the potential in cleaning up the old dive and turning it into the casually cool watering hole that it has become. The kitchen has been gaining momentum for the last few years, creeping out of standard bar fare and dipping into New American. The patio is a perfect place to spend an evening with friends enjoying the ever changing tap list and a cheesesteak. Ehhhh,started off ok ordered wings, sauce was like it was pre made. Ordered the special to go wich was chicken and waffles got to my hotel room 10 minutes after receiving the order and wow it was a soggy mess plus they put a pickle(who the hell puts a pickle in with chicken and waffles?)wich on top of being a soggy mess now tasted like a friggin pickle. The overall inside feel of the bar is pretty much what I was expecting based on outer appearances, I could easily see this place getting overly crowded on weekend nights. The bar staff didn't make me feel too welcomed when I first came in here to order a drink which is why I'm deducting a star. Otherwise the crab balls were pretty legit although a bit pricey for 4 of 'em but I do recommend them as a small starter app. Overall the place seems to be a fairly decent bar full of Hagerstown locals which appeared to mostly be a noisy middle-aged type of audience, overall though I wouldn't mind stopping in here again sometime. read more

Excellent food and courteous staff. My wife and I often go there for our date night. Last time we were there I ordered the fish tacos (highly recommend) without the mango salsa...however when the server brought the food it had the mango salsa. The server/owner was extremely apologetic and quickly fixed the problem by making me a new dinner which he refused payment for. Love the place....frequently visited years ago when it was "peanut night"! My only complaint is the bathrooms...very small and uncomfortable. I wholeheartedly recommend the Axe for their food, hospitality and ambience. read more

Incredible Food and not expensive. Chicken cordon bleu and burgers were great. Kids ate chicken tenders, no kids menu but enough on menu to make them happy. Only issue was wait for the food. 40 minutes, no big deal grab an appetizer, it came out quick, recommend the crab dip. We came in at 1230 on a saturday, so I expected to wait. Servers were great. Southern Tier Warlock Imperial Stout was excellent. Service was excellent. Black and bleu burger was great. Grilled chicken club was good, but then how can you go wrong with cheddar and bacon. Interesting place, sort of a dive bar but great food and alcohol selection. They have some great specials from time to time. The staff is great. If you are a regular they remember you quickly. I think what makes it so interesting is the mixture of people. You me business people, hippies, artsy types, people of different races, and the typical locals. Don't let the outside fool you, its actually pretty nice inside. It has a chill pub kind of atmosphere and you feel right at ease when you walk in. Pleasantly surprised with this place. We went here for a birthday dinner for my fiancé. He came up and yelp as a good burger place. It is local to us so we figured we give it a try. I'm happy we did they had a big selection of burgers on their menu. We also wanted to see with these deep fried ribs were about. So about the deep fried ribs they were OK. It tasted like ribs with a fried chicken coating. There was a smoked barbecue sauce drizzled on top which was really good. My boys really liked the cat fish bites. We were not so fond of their nacho cheese it was a little bit more textured for our taste. So let's talk about this burger oh my goodness it was so tender and juicy about three quarters of an inch thick and well seasoned. Warning although you can come here with children it's not highly recommended. I did bring my sons whom are 10 and 18. The staff there were very accommodating but the bottom line is this atmosphere was not for family dining. read more

This place has definitely gotten better over the years! The bartenders are very welcoming and never make you feel like an outsider, even if you aren't a regular. The catfish nuggets are very good and the burgers are also awesome. Not just your typical bar food here, great variety for whatever you're feeling that day. Rolled into Hagerstown on a cross country trek from NYC to LA- every place we hit was "just closing" because it was 9 pm on a Sunday (laughable, if you live in a big city), but the last place that turned us down pointed us to Broad Axe- it was so dimly lit on the outside we were sure it was closed and it would be another Denny's night, but we took a chance and tried the door- Success! We were welcomed by a super friendly bartender and food that was as good as we could have hoped for. AND we got to see David Hasselhoff get swallowed by a flying pelagic in Sharknado- on multiple screens! AND, they recognized me from Zoey 101, so this place absolutely, positively rocks! HOT TIP: they're from Illinois, so order the breaded pork tenderloin... ignore the other comments about "the service"- it's hard to predict how many people will show up on any given day, and these guys are tying hard to get it right- the bottom line is, what comes out of that tiny kitchen is first rate and they deserve a bit of slack if you're inconvenienced. Took a trip to the outlets this weekend, relied on Yelp to find a late lunch/ early dinner spot. I choose broad axe due to the great reviews, but was disappointed there wasn't more photos of the food. I had the Chesapeake burger (ordered rare and it was actually rare) it had great flavor, the crab on top was a delicious touch, and I was pleased they offer vinegar for their fries. I ordered a mixed drink, it was strong (they don't skimp on alcohol) but I expected it to be sweet, with a little more flavor or maybe some fruit, but for the price (it was only $6) I can't complain too much. I have to say, Yelp didn't let me down, I had plans to take/add pictures of my food but as always, got distracted. read more
