My family stopped here for a quick dinner stop on our way back from a sightseeing tour of DC. We were excited about the Yelp rating and the opportunity to get wings and burgers. It was so disappointing due to very poor service. When I went in to have a look, I wasn't sure if it was a bar with a little food on the side or a restaurant/tavern. The man behind the bar instructed me to grab any table. I waved the family in and we took a table up front - trying to minimize the ambient bar noise. The guy behind the bar stopped over with menus and took our drink order. When he returned we ordered wings as an appetizer. He went off and disappeared for 20-30 minutes. There was no management or service in sight during that time....the place was on auto pilot. Eventually another group came in and sat nearby. The "server" eventually returned spoke to another table then greeted the new table. He glances over at us with a puzzled look then comes and asks how we're doing to which I asked "Do we have wings coming out?". He replies, "Did you order wings?". Doh! I told him we did and asked him to cancel the order and get us a check for our drinks. Forget the burgers, club or French Dip we were hoping for. He comes back 5 minutes later to tell us that our wings were up if we still wanted them. I agreed. They were great. Everything we were wanting. We were even considering staying for the rest....but another long delay in any follow-up service killed that idea. He returned and I asked again for the check which took another 10 minutes. SO much wasted time. Get it together man!!! Terrible service!!! We are generally pretty tolerant and forgiving....but this was ridiculous. read more

What a gem. What looks like a great bar, also has a great kitchen. I called on Saturday night asking if they took reservations. They said no but ended up keeping a table open for our group of four. We started out with the appetizer platter and every single item on there was outstanding. Our boys got the fried pickles and said they were the best they ever had. They are pickle experts so that is high praise. We all got sandwiches. Excellent Buffalo chicken sandwich and the French dip was outstanding. Great place and great atmosphere. In town for a concert. Unknowingly high rated so we tried it. Local dump dive bar, can't understand any positive reviews. It was like they were doing us a favor. Dirty place Bar Rescue would love it here! Staff was very unwelcoming, had no interest in serving us, telling us over an hour wait on food times. Sat for 10 minutes without anyone even taking a drink order. Bartenders look right through you standing there while they chit chat with patrons. Like several others we went down the street to Los Amigos and had an awesome meal, very cheap and welcoming!!!! Stay away from this dump, you've been warned. read more

I was out in Hagerstown for a meeting and swung by for a quick lunch. Really nice variety on the menu. I had a tough time deciding and finally went with a spicy burger. The burger was clearly handcrafted, very juicy, and perfectly cooked. The lightly fried jalapeños on top was a really nice touch. Service was quick and friendly. Looked like a great tap list too. Will definitely come back next time I am out that way and not working to try some of their beers. read more

We stopped for drinks after dinner at a local restaurant. Enjoyed some drinks and the outdoor patio area. All male staff, which I found a bit odd, but okay I guess as it's considered a 'sports bar'. We asked the bartender at dinner for a recommendation and she told us about this place. Was definitely worth stopping by. read more

Great spot in town for lunch and dinner. We have been several times and it has a great atmosphere about it. Went here with a couple of friends and pretty much just got ignored. After figuring out the weird parking situation, we walked in and stood around for a couple minutes waiting for a host. When no one showed, we figured it must be a seat-yourself sort of deal, so we looked around for a table. There didnt seem to be any open, so we tried to flag down a waiter or someone at the bar. But none of them seemed interested in communicating or making eye contact. At this point we just gave up and left. Too bad because the food looked pretty good. Broad Axe! What can I say?!? The food is amazingly good and has no business being so for the low price that they charge. Simply amazing food, perfect service and low prices. Started with the sampler, catfish (not a huge fan) was amazing! The fried ribs are the perfect food for rib fans. The queso was beyond my expectations. For my main course I tried the Chorizo burger... phenomenal! Nearly reminded me of my first kiss. Seriously that good! The staff was attentive down to even my son falling off his chair and them being right there to comfort him as well. Does it get better than The Broad Axe? Not sure I want to know. read more

We love exploring restaurants in cities we've never visited before. This is downtown and a small place but a great find. Busy on a Sunday night with a party of 10 next to us but the service was great. Nice choice of craft beer and cider. Wonderful pub style menu. I took a chance on Chicken and waffles and it was delicious. Odd combination to a New Yorker but it works. All the sandwich choices look good. Nice bar with small dining area and bartop tables. Nice place for lunch. We were really impressed by the menu selection, and everything was delicious. As with most places downtown, parking is a bit of a pain, and the one way streets in Hagerstown make getting there interesting. Nothing that can't be overcome with gps and/or more familiarity with the area. read more

Been here quite a few times... With no regrets. With Executive Chef and Sous Chef in the kitchen, we get overcooked, double-breaded very small catfish dinner and an Irish breakfast with under cooked pork sausage, and canned baked beans. The fish was 1/2" thick with 11/2 inches of hard breading. She couldn't even eat it. Only 10% discount as the management refused to comp half the meal. NEVER GOING BACK!!! read more

We had a wonderful visit to this tavern last Sunday! Very welcoming atmosphere! Had the Kettle Chips with our beer and wine to start out. Very good indeed.... Layed back place that day with a few people at the bar and a couple families in front enjoying Father's Day dinner. The waitress was very nice and very helpful - everyone having a good time.... A man from the back came out and helped deliver their food, checking if everything was good with them. I remarked how nice the place was and asked if they ever thought about opening a place in Tampa? He smiled and said he'd been down in Florida visiting family in the past but seemed very happy where they are. I of course said we would be regulars if he changed his mind... Our dinner orders arrived and were furthered amazed at how good our veggie burger and spinach salad with chicken tasted... I remarked I would be providing a great review on Yelp and they smiled. I figured they'd be stormed by new customers for weeks... Then I saw their reviews and realized they were already highly rated and we were just another couple who found an awesome tavern to eat/drink at which is known by many.... The broad axe is a truly unique place. The owner Bob down to every server and bartender treat you like you are family when you are here. I have never felt more welcomed anywhere than I have here. And then the food is consistently good as well. The fried pickles are my favorite anywhere and I truly haven't had a bad thing every time I have been here. First time at Broad Axe. We stopped in for lunch. God Pub menu. My wife had the Shrimp Po Boy. It was very good the remoulade was spicy, but didn't over power the shrimp. My Fish and Chips were also very good. Definitely a Maryland Fish and Chips with Old Bay in the batter. Servers are very attentive!! We came back a couple of months later. I had the philly cheese steak, and it's always good to find someplace that has a clue as to how to do a cheesesteak right, since so many places do it badly. Mary had the crab cakes-- can't beat that. I started off with a Rogue Imperial Chocolate Stout. 10% alcohol content. Hurry and bring me my soup please! Amazing tasty brew. Served up in a small 25cl stemmed beer glass. Atmosphere is a great pub feel, small and homey and music just the right level. Started with a cup of Crab Bisque that I unconsciously proclaimed "shit, that's a good soup!". My Shroom & Swiss Burger came out by the fourth spoonful of soup, so the food relay was seamless. Kettle Chips made on site as a side were great. The burger was good but not great and only because a little grizzle. Grill taste was there though. Maybe a hint too much Worcheshire in it. So glad I decided to skip the easy walk across the hotel parking lot and drive 3 miles to come here. read more
