A great lunch break and stop after surviving the Baltimore traffic. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The Broad Axe was great decor and even better service.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] All smiles and very friendly. The crab cake is house made and so are the O Bays flavored chips. Spinach salad with chicken was also good. Our meals were so fresh we thought they were fresh picked out of the garden or the water. Our beers were Maryland beers, Jack's Abby from Farmington a German Pilsner and Idioms It's the Berry a Fruited Sour. Dessert was Cider Boys Blue Raspberry from our home state, Steven's Point Wis.

Great service, good food. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Humble but clean interior.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]TV's on site, some cool signs on the walls.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] ([[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant/bar was cold, as if the heat could not keep up with the low outside temperature.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]])

    Chesapeake Chicken Sandwich with Fries
    Ryan W.

Came with my wife on a date after seeing a show nearby, and this exceeded expectations for a really great price! I love fried chicken sandwiches, and I love crabcakes, so the Chesapeake Sandwich jumped out the menu--a combo sandwich of both!... and $15? Sign me up. The chicken was super moist on the inside, crispy and well seasoned on the outside. The crabcake was almost all crabmeat as well, which was delicious! My wife got a chicken taco salad, which came in a tortilla bowl and was also very good (with very well cooked chicken on top). My only complaint: the fries were a bit under-done. They also do 5oz samples of beer on draft, which was very nice for when you don't want a whole drink.

Cat fish nuggets so tender and juicy

Food was delish. Pleasantly surprised that the catfish nuggets were so good! The fries came out lukewarm. The waiter sent them back. The new batch came out very warm, not hot but they were tasty. My shrimp nachos were unassuming but oh so good. Loved the tiny diced mangoes in it. It was just missing a good pic de gallon or spice. No lime on the side either. The kettle chips with old bay scrumptious. A little on the to ch let side which made them hard to chew for me. My son enjoyed his hot wings.

Food is pretty good. The last time I went they were out of a lot of the ciders/beers we wanted to try. Service is friendly.

Ask the Community - Broad Axe

How far is this from The Maryland Theater?

Hi Jennifer! It’s only two blocks away! A few minute walk. I’d recommend parking in the garage on North Potomac Street which is halfway between the theatre and restaurant.

I am moving to Maryland, do you have a line up of live music events? What kinds of music do you guys have?

They have a good range of musical acts occasionally. Bluegrass, Blues, rock, indie bands, etc. Thursday is jazz night and it is on point. Trent Renshaw is usually on drums and there's a bunch of really talented local musicians that show up. It's a…

Are they still open? Looked very run down like the rest of the storefronts in the area/looked very closed.

Yes very open! Don't let the outside fool you ! Hope to see you sometime !

You can also pay for a parking pass through their website but the lot only opens up an hour beforehand so be sure to plan your evening with that in mind. We ended up parking on the street for only $3 since we arrived early to grab dinner nearby. The entry line was super long and literally went around the block but it moved surprisingly fast. Staff was friendly and helpful at the door. The inside was dark when we arrived and it would've been nice to have some house lights so people could find their way around the venue a little easier. The AC was cranking and the temp was comfortable. Upstairs has standing room and some bleachers which provides a good view with less of a crowd. Their VIP area looks nice and I'd be interested in splurging next time for a seat and a better view. There's bars downstairs and upstairs and even some food concessions. Getting out of the venue from the balcony was a bit stressful with only one way out. It makes you imagine what would happen if you needed to get out in a rush... other than that, it's a good space.

The only problem is parking can be hard to find. There is a lot across the street, but it opens up an hour before the show. Honestly, it's usually just easiest to take Metro in and walk over. There are plenty of great restaurants nearby so it's easy to grab a bite before the show. The drinks are solid. It's mostly standing room but you can get a seat for accessibility reasons or if you pay for VIP.

I don't mind the community seating, but I do prefer assigned seats. It would be nice if they sold seats based on the location of the table. A lot of people don't have time to get there 2 hours before a show to get a ticket number. Especially for a show on a weekday. The parking was full when I arrived at 7:15 for a 7:30 show. However, they conveniently provided extra parking across the street at St. Rita's. The sound was great. Jeffrey Osborne sounded amazing. He even walked through the theater a couple of times. It was a good time. I didn't try the food, but people seemed to enjoy it. My table had chicken fingers and the wing baskets. They said it was good. Overall, I would recommend this venue for an intimate experience. It's a bit dated but that adds to the charm.
