I've only been about 2 or 3 times but each times the food has been absolutely excellent. I'd suggest their chicken and waffles because they were honestly some of the best chicken and waffles I've ever had. The staff was super polite and also funny. Always a great visit .. I always find something to eat and it's always delicious. They normally have a great selection of beer but often they kick their beers quickly , which is disappointing and it's hard to find out what they have on tap as they don't post it online very often. Just popped in the Broadaxe. sign said please wait to be seated. Crowded, stood there for 15 minutes, none of the staff acknowledge us. More couples are flooding in when we hear a waitress tell one couple that you have to register at the bar if you want a table! Really? We stood by the Please Wait To Be Seated sign that should have said Register at Bar, especially if their staff aren't going to acknowledge you. By the time we overheard her, we left. Too many couples had gotten in front of us while we stood there unknowing. read more

We have been twice and will keep coming back. We got the crab balls, seafood platter (special) and a sandwich the first time and it was great. Came back and got crab dip, old bay chips, burger and crab cake sandwich. Old bay chips were home made and great. Crab dip came with old bay chips and warm toasted bread. We found this gem downtown and loved it! Little hole in the wall with incredible food and good beer! I had a simple caesar salad with grilled shrimp and it was great while my fiance had one of their sandwiches that was large and tasted awesome! We got a crab dip as an appetizer and it was the best dip I have ever had but very rich and filling. Big enough for several to share! Will be back next time we visit! read more

We stopped by after finding it in an internet search. What a fantastic place, its a good thing I don't live nearby. When we walked in we were greeted and told to sit anywhere. The guy behind the bar came right over with menus and a beer menu. 2 minutes later he was back asking about drink orders. One of the party wanted to taste the cider so he brought her a sample when he brought my beer. People made up their minds about food and finished drink decisions. Drinks were back in just a couple minutes and we had a chance to sit and hang out. The place is great, tables were probably closer to 10' than 6, everyone in the place was happy and the place had an all around great feel. The waiters were always right there, but we never felt rushed; which is a real accomplishment, usually you either can't find one or you can't get rid of them, these guys were right on time. Hmm food..... They have a rolling beer list that changes every 48 hours so there should always be something you like. The food menu is great, priced are low, and the food was amazing. We ordered beers.......and fish and chips, the Chesapeake chicken sandwich, shrimp po boy, and a stuffed portabella with a side of Old Bay slaw. (Pics are attached.) The fish and chips was just one piece of fish, but damn, it was a HUGE piece. Fries and chips are homemade, the chips were crispy, and not chain restaurant crispy where there is that soft soggy center, but the entire chip was completely crispy. Chesapeake chicken sandwich was a really big chicken breast that had been fried to crunchy with crab and melted cheese. I had tongive up and toss the roll halfway through because I needed to finish the chicken more than I needed the bread. Po boy was stuffed full and the remulade was just right. The stuffed portabella became my problem when my wife couldn't eat the whole thing and had to give someone the crab and cheese....see my problem. But, being the problem solver I am, I added it to the chicken sandwich and did my best. Dessert was tiramisu. I heard it was good but again I had to compromise so finished my beer instead of moving on to dessert. read more

We were just passing through when we found this place on Yelp. Took a bit to find but well worth it. Food was delicious and the bar was well stocked. One of the best places we've tried in awhile. I'll start out by saying we're not from around here and when Broad Axe was recommended to us by a Hagerstown local, we knew we needed to give it a try. Now, I'll admit you might have some trouble finding their parking if you're new to the area like us, but we parked and walked to the restaurant/bar, enjoying the beauty to be found in the Hagerstown buildings. Upon entering Broad Axe we were advised to sit wherever we'd like, and opted for an open table inside. It ended up being the perfect spot for viewing the live jazz band that came in around 8pm. Matty was our server, and he was wonderful! When deciding on an appetizer he highly recommended the shrimp nachos, so we went with his recommendation to try something new. They arrived exactly as Matty described them. Exploding with taste from the finely chopped jalapeño and pineapple, the shrimp covered in old bay, and the perfect amount of cheese. You must try!!! Perfect for 2 to share. Filling while still leaving enough room for dinner. My fiancé ordered the fish tacos (another recommendation by Matty) and I ordered the crab cake burger (can't recall it's name), both of us ordered the fries (after reading raving reviews on yelp). It was all amazing!!! We ate until we both felt sick (not recommended) and still had to order the house dessert after seeing 3 delivered to another table. I NEED the recipe for their peanut butter chocolate pie. It was unlike anything peanut butter and chocolate I've ever had. I recommend sharing a slice as it's very sweet and difficult to eat a whole piece alone, although it's not impossible. 110% will return here if I'm ever in the area again! read more

I asked for a salad with 2 dressings and checked with the guy to make sure he heard me, he said he did and laughed and I still only got one. We stop here once a year when we come to Maryland. And they never disappoint! We were there this week with our dogs and sat out on the patio. The waiter was super friendly and gave our dogs bowls of water too. The food was amazing as always! My family stopped here for a quick dinner stop on our way back from a sightseeing tour of DC. We were excited about the Yelp rating and the opportunity to get wings and burgers. It was so disappointing due to very poor service. When I went in to have a look, I wasn't sure if it was a bar with a little food on the side or a restaurant/tavern. The man behind the bar instructed me to grab any table. I waved the family in and we took a table up front - trying to minimize the ambient bar noise. The guy behind the bar stopped over with menus and took our drink order. When he returned we ordered wings as an appetizer. He went off and disappeared for 20-30 minutes. There was no management or service in sight during that time....the place was on auto pilot. Eventually another group came in and sat nearby. The "server" eventually returned spoke to another table then greeted the new table. He glances over at us with a puzzled look then comes and asks how we're doing to which I asked "Do we have wings coming out?". He replies, "Did you order wings?". Doh! I told him we did and asked him to cancel the order and get us a check for our drinks. Forget the burgers, club or French Dip we were hoping for. He comes back 5 minutes later to tell us that our wings were up if we still wanted them. I agreed. They were great. Everything we were wanting. We were even considering staying for the rest....but another long delay in any follow-up service killed that idea. He returned and I asked again for the check which took another 10 minutes. SO much wasted time. Get it together man!!! Terrible service!!! We are generally pretty tolerant and forgiving....but this was ridiculous. read more

The Axe is a friendly place with an outdoor patio and relatively decent beer selection. They also have a pool table, frequently host live music, and have karaoke on Thursdays. The bartenders--Maria, Becky, and Ashley--are what make it great... They don't put up with any shenanigans, but their mission is to make sure everyone is smiling, laughing, and having a great time. What a gem. What looks like a great bar, also has a great kitchen. I called on Saturday night asking if they took reservations. They said no but ended up keeping a table open for our group of four. We started out with the appetizer platter and every single item on there was outstanding. Our boys got the fried pickles and said they were the best they ever had. They are pickle experts so that is high praise. We all got sandwiches. Excellent Buffalo chicken sandwich and the French dip was outstanding. Great place and great atmosphere. In town for a concert. Unknowingly high rated so we tried it. Local dump dive bar, can't understand any positive reviews. It was like they were doing us a favor. Dirty place Bar Rescue would love it here! Staff was very unwelcoming, had no interest in serving us, telling us over an hour wait on food times. Sat for 10 minutes without anyone even taking a drink order. Bartenders look right through you standing there while they chit chat with patrons. Like several others we went down the street to Los Amigos and had an awesome meal, very cheap and welcoming!!!! Stay away from this dump, you've been warned. read more

I was out in Hagerstown for a meeting and swung by for a quick lunch. Really nice variety on the menu. I had a tough time deciding and finally went with a spicy burger. The burger was clearly handcrafted, very juicy, and perfectly cooked. The lightly fried jalapeños on top was a really nice touch. Service was quick and friendly. Looked like a great tap list too. Will definitely come back next time I am out that way and not working to try some of their beers. read more
