Gluten free fish and chips is one of the harder treats to find as a gluten free diner and this place delivers! Not only do they have GF batter and a separate fryer, you can pick what kind of fish you want and a single or double filet. It's been 6 years since I've had GF fish and chips so I splurged on the halibut. It was so delicious. I got the single and it was a really generous portion. Fried to perfection, this was an indulgence that gluten free diners dream of. Thick cut chips were really great too. Friendly service. Not sure if I'll ever make it back to Charlottetown but if I do this place is first on my list. read more

Lunch today in Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island. Many places here for fish and chips but this one was the highest rated in the area on Yelp. Small storefront on the main dining street. Bold, blue color makes it easy to find. Seated outside per our request, the server was very quick and friendly, provided good advice on portion sizes and menu choices. Hot, fresh food delivered in about 10 minutes, drinks kept us cool in the wonderful weather while waiting. The single filet plate had a HUGE piece of fired Haddock, bigger than the dinner plate with hand cut fries, cole slaw, and lemon slices. The server offered special, homemade tartar sauce that was very good, malt, and ketchup for the fries. The fish was superb, the fries should be double fried due to the water content in fresh potatoes, but they were very good, just not as crispy as they could be. Bathrooms were very clean and smelled freshly cleaned, inside dining is a little dark but there are many tables to choose from. We will return to this place if we make it back this way again. read more

I'm giving this place a 5 because they had gluten free fish and chips and I've never seen that! And it was great! My husband and I each got the Haddock Fish and Chips, his was regular batter. The size of the fillet was enormous. We also head a Caesar salad and some thick cut fries and both were good as well. Service was friendly and quick. We grab lunch here every time we visit PEI. Highly recommend the 1 piece haddock filet. It's HUGE. I get fish and salad, instead of chips (I hear you all groaning ;) The garden salad is one of the best. Full of veggies: tomatoes, red and green peppers, red onion, cabbage and shredded carrot. Great to have the treat of a perfectly fried piece of fish and know the salad is full of vitamins. Friendly service every time. Fast service too!! We came in for dinner and were fortunate to get a seat inside. They were pretty busy that night, but our server was very attentive and helpful. I say it often, and I will say it again, the English know how to do a good fish and chips. And this place learned from the best! Fried in Tallow and canola oil it was a place I was happy to walk into. I can rarely have good friend food, but I found a place to make my taste buds happy, here in Prince Edward Island. It was a case of, I didn't want to call in the off chance they said "no, don't come here". But hubby convinced me to give them a chance to beat the norm. Being allergic to soy, it's not easy to find food (let alone fried foods) but here they knew what might have soy, and what wouldn't, and if I got the gluten free badder on my fish...there was no cross contamination! Say what?! Just know their count for fish is way off - in a good way. Hubby ordered 1 piece, and he got two (basically half a fish), I ordered 2 pieces and I got a whole halibut, that equals... a lot of fish. While I did my best I couldn't finish it. Needless to say, we will be back this visit, and I will enjoy every single bite! If you have allergies give them a call. They are very knowledgeable of what is in their food, and will be able to help navigate the minefield that is eating with food allergies. read more

I ordered the two piece cod which came as one massive piece, heavily breaded and a bit greasy. I think that's kind of ok, because when you order fish and chips - what might be expecting? Service was fine. My Caesar was acceptable - again, not mind blowing, but acceptable. And the setting overall was nice. Quiet and the music not too loud. As much as I would like to give the rating 4 stars, it really only deserves 3. Maybe try a little harder, good people of Brits Fish and Chips. The batter on the fish was soggy, like it had either been fried ages ago and left to stand, or the oil wasn't up to temp. The fries were dried out. I have eaten fish and chips at many places on PEI, and the standard is very high. Not here... My advice? I came here in the afternoon because I was hungry but needed to get some work done as I was travelling for work. Being from Toronto, couldn't resist the seafood when on the east coast. The signage claims it's the best fish n chips in Charlottetown so I went in. They did not lie - the fish n chips were AWESOME (& as a bonus you don't even need to get chips - they have a huge variety of side selections - personally I went with Caesar salad... I know, weird, fish n caesar salad... but it was good!). There are several fish choices and you can even get a half size if you want (which I did - and it was still huge). The service was also excellent - I can't remember my servers name (he did tell me), but he was very friendly, offered some great local recommendations after finding out I wasn't a local. There was even good wifi & so I actually sad for a while and got quite a bit of work done (it was like 2pm so I guess a quiet time... worked out well)! I want to rate this place higher, but can't. I ate here with my wife, who eats a gluten-free diet. My (traditional) fish and chips could have easily earned a 4 or 5. I had 1 piece of the halibut, and it was creamy and delicious. The fries were good. I will be forever grateful to this place for introducing me to Crafty Radler beer from Pump House in Moncton. Sadly, the GF fish and chips and GF onion rings just did not cut it. This place is trying. The batter is crispy on the outside. They use a separate fryer for the GF stuff. There is, however, a gummy quality and distracting flavour from the rice flour that renders the final product inedible. My wife scraped off the batter and ate the fish. We did not touch the onion rings after first bites. To their credit, they took the initiative to take the onion rings off the bill. I hope they get better at GF. If you are GF and want to try them out, we suggest getting the onion rings first as an inexpensive experiment, and moving on to fish and chips only if the rings are to your liking. No issues at all with service or anything else about our time there. I don't object to the many higher reviews here. I just suspect they are almost entirely from folks who don't order GF fried foods. read more

I went here with a friend when I was craving greasy food. And the fish and chips far surpassed anything I could've imagined! In Toronto the fish fillets are usually smidgen size and loaded with batter, meaning you hardly actually end up getting much fish at all. Whereas here at Brits, their fish fillets are HUGE and perfected, the proper batter:fish ratio. You are really getting the bang for your buck, because you pay close to 10 bucks and thats relatively cheap for the portion you get. I was completely satisfied when I left. And when I return to PEI, I will definitely be re-visting Brits. I suggest you get there fast! :) read more

This was the best fish and chips we've had outside of London! The server was very knowledgeable and courteous and guided us in the menu and how much to order. We had thr traditional haddock fish and chips and also tried a panko crusted fish. My husband and kids enjoyed the traditional crusted one more. Even my pickiest 4 year old ate his fish enthusiastically. I also tried the lobster tacos which were also standard. Their home made tarter sauce was also delicious! Went there for dinner Saturday night. What a mistake! No complaints about the server, he was friendly and attentive. But the food - really disappointing. We ordered deep fried mushrooms to share; a bowl of fish chowder; and a pan fried fish dinner. What did we get? The heavily battered mushrooms were dripping in deep fryer oil, so much that the batter was inedible. The fish chowder, at $29 a bowl, should have been called potato chowder, since it had no sign of seafood in it. Lots of potato however. I love this place so much. The food is very well priced and super super yummy. The best fish and chips I've had in town is here and the tartar sauce is so awesome I think it might be home made (not the nasty kraft packages). The handcut fries are greasy but awesome and the burgers are big and delicious. If you are walking by stop in it's delicious and well worth the affordable prices. I was just there in fact and it was soooooo awesome and not very busy. The one piece haddock is quite filling and large so only attempt the two piece if you are really really hungry!! read more
