As good and fresh as mussels get and as wonderful as service gets!…read more After driving through a couple of towns, down a strange dirt road (not the typical route!), and arriving at The Black Horse BBQ & Grill, we weren't sure what to expect. There is a real community hall feel to the pub, it's definitely not the fanciest or somewhere you'd typically bring a first date. But who needs fancy, who need pretentious - good people, good food, and good beer is sometimes all you need! We were a group of 8 and my husband had luckily found out about The Black Horse via Google search. Sitting down with hungry bellies, seven of us opted for the mussels to start for $5 per pound. Now. These mussels are farmed just down the road and come in plain, buffalo, wine & garlic, or spicy tomato (I see they have a new salt & pepper popcorn flavor as well!). The. Best. Mussels. I've. Ever. Had. No joke. Just delicious - all flavours. The meals were decent, not super memorable though - the sweet potato fries were very tasty. The food was pretty much typical pub food, which is why I take one star off this otherwise 5 star review. The service was really some of the best service I've had anywhere. How often does the owner come up, chat with your table, and sit down for some welcome conversation? How often do they really, actually care and go out of their way to find out how you like the food? He was very proud of the buffalo wing flavoured mussels with blue cheese dipping sauce - his own creation. Rightfully proud, I might add, they were soooo tasty, great flavor combination! And when we mentioned that we were interested in deep sea fishing, he called up his cousin and handed my husband his cell. It turned out his cousin ran a deep sea fishing boat and we met up with him the next afternoon! All in all, it was memorable PEI experience for all of us...I'm only sad that I do not have access to those mussels any time I want!

Dishes ordered: Mussels Wings Fish & Chips The mussels were more plentiful than the first visit and super fresh. We ordered them plain this time, and they were so good. There is no reason to dress up these mussels. Not one mussel in the whole dish was even unopened which means they were super fresh. The wings were superb. Crispy, and seasoned skin. So good! We ordered them with the homemade BBQ sauce, great choice. The wings were so tender on the inside. Fish & Chips were the only complaint. The filet was quite thin so it was overcooked. I think if we had a normal sized filet, the kitchen would not have screwed it up. The batter though, was very tasty and cooked in very good/fresh oil. The fries, same as last time, were fresh, well cooked, and excellent. Beer, cheap. Great.

The pool tables look as if they're brand new and same goes for the cues and balls. The entire venue was sleek and extremely clean. There were many tv's playing a variety of different sporting events. I didn't even notice until we were leaving but there's also some slot machines! My friend said that on weekdays it's always empty and it was exactly that. We were the only ones playing pool along with a few others at the bar. Apparently it does get packed on weekends though! Also, it was nice that we could order pizza from the place next door and bring it to our table at Doolys and eat there. Where I come from (Toronto) that would be a big no-no, no outside food allowed. On a side note, the pizza and fries were great from the place next door. Overall great tables and we had a great time shooting around. We were there for almost 3hours and the bill came up to be $24 (also ordered a pitcher of soft drink) so it was very affordable. Not sure how many pool halls there are in PEI but I will definitely be back at Dooly's regardless! 5/5

Extraordinary pub fare - really, it's simply great restaurant food served in a small pub. Try the red ale on tap - it's perfectly balanced and they served it very cold. Chicken Wings: fantastic, and gluten-free to boot (not that you'd know). Burger: excellent. In-house ground beef. Tastes great. Fresh, hot, grilled bun. I'm personally not a fan of some of the Canadian ketchup and relish that I've had, since it's too sweet for me, so watch that. When reading on Lonely Plant I didn't know that large cats lived on PEI. However, with my own eyes I spotted 3 (three!) cougars. They were several years older than me and wanted to take my meat to presumably their den. I quickly tried to evade them, however cougars are clever beings. I tried to escape out the front door, but I needed a cab. I wanted to ask the bouncer, but I'm assuming he finally got a chance to relieve his bowels. I was lost in this confusing community. Through several evasive manovers, and walking faster than the brittle bones of these cougars could move, I was safe. I can not thank Michael's pizza enough for providing me shelter and calling me a cab. I'm surprised this bar isn't a level on a Cabella's arcade hunting game. A great place to eat, drink, and play in the sandbox!…read more The Sandbox Pub & Eatery is a restaurant and bar serving Canadian cuisine and seafood in a relaxed very casual and family friendly atmosphere. The Sandbox offers outside patio dining in the front of the building with a nice view of Route 6 traffic, as well as seating in the pub area and table seating in the lower main back dining area complete with a dedicated kids play area with a big sandbox. I have fond childhood memories of spending countless hours playing in the sandbox with my Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars & trucks. The interior of the airy dining area is finished wooden walls and high ceilings with colorful tarps spread overhanging from the ceilings in dining room. The menu offerings include chowders, salads, sandboxwiches, burgers, fresh hand cut fries & poutines, pasta, steak, chicken, seafood dishes, lobster dinners (cold or hot), and desserts. They also have a Little Sandboxers menu too! The prices here are moderate, most sandboxwiches/burgers (with fries or rice) $9.99-$12.99, and most entrees $11.99-$25.99. They serve Coca Cola beverages and beer (bottled & draft) and wine. After a visiting a few sights in Gables country, my friend and I took a lunch break in The Sandbox. Before entering the building, I had to pause and take a quick photo behind the colorful wooden board with painted Lobster with a "head cut-out." We sat ourselves in the lower dining room and the waitress arrived with newspaper print menus. For lunch, we ordered a bowl of Island Blue Mussels ($9.99) and a Fish Burger with Fries ($10.99) which was served to us in under 15 minutes. The mussels were very tasty and cooked just right in garlic, melted butter on the side. The FIsh Burger had a very crunchy piece of English battered haddock (not too greasy) with lettuce, tomato, and tangy tartar sauce on a toasted bun. The big pile of hand-cut fries was excellent, which deep fried golden & crisp to perfection. The fries were not greasy and the best tasting fries we've had in a while. The PEI potatoes used for the fries have that distinct sweeter flavour than other potatoes we've had. It must be that red soil here! The food was solid good and the service was acceptable, as the waitress checked up on us a few times during the meal. Several young sandboxers were seen having a great time playing in the sandbox near our table, and there were tracks of reddish sand on the floor leading to the washrooms. I wanted to play in the sandbox too, but we needed to boogie and stay on schedule for some afternoon driving around Eastern PEI.

We were greeted at the door by the fun lobster cutout, but there was no sign of a sandbox or kid play area... Well from the wall mural it seemed like there might once have been a play area In one corner, but it was empty at 7pm. We chose to eat outside based on that, and a friendly waitress led us to the deck. We were given newsprint menus with a small kids selection: hot dog, chicken fingers, burger, or fish. There was a coloring picture, but we were not offered crayons. Luckily we had some. For the food, we had been warned by our hotel to stick to the basics. We started with a plate of island mussels, generously heaped, and these were a hit. We had had seafood the night before, so we all ordered burgers. When I asked for my burger to be prepared "medium" the waitress looked confused and said she wasn't sure what that meant. Sure enough, all the burgers came out the same: well done, dry, and burnt. Not what I expect from a quality restaurant, serving good clean beef... Fast food places, sure. In comparison, the next night at Yvonne's I ordered steak medium and a) the waitress knew what I was talking about and b) it came out perfectly. The fries were good, service attentive, the side salads fresh and crispy, but what really saved the meal was the strawberry shortcake. Very nice.
