Unlike some restaurants they cater for veggies. A full veggie menu which pleased my daughter. Not the usual baked peppers or bean casserole but a varied menu. As you sit there waiting for the food there is so much to view. Full of old relics of a bygone age from scientific instruments, farm implements, cobblers tools etc etc. Like a museum. As I have said, the service is second to none. Professional yet very friendly. They do all they can to make the visit enjoyable. The 'landlady' obviously runs a tight ship and she is a 'character' (I'll say no more but hope that on your visit you will meet her). Thank you all for a great birthday treat. Fabulous location!…read more Very good food. I had the ribs... huge, huge portion... x4 what you would expect. Had only managed to eat half; they kindly wrapped the rest in foil for me to take home. Excellent service. An excellent country pub and dining venue. Large gravel carpark, with overspill parking through gate into grassy enclosure. They have chalets too... So you can spend the night if you get too drunk or too full with all that wonderful food to drive home. ;-)

The food is good - pub grub with a hint of style and not too pricey. There is a snug area that has a fairly big TV but this only seems to be on for major sporting events and does not spoil the general atmosphere of the pub, which it has to be said is on the cosy side. Overall it is a nice village pub. The landlord operates a strictly no swearing policy which can get a little tiresome. As a father and a son I don't want my kids or my old mum exposed to excessive bad language BUT at 10pm when you are out with your pals having a few beers in your local pub some Anglo Saxon will be uttered... it is a pub, an English pub and the constant paranoia of saying the wrong thing and being barred does not lend itself to a good night out.

I find it shocking that someone could think a place that offers stained sheets and hairs in a bed acceptable for £65.00 a night. Things we found in the room: Dirty face wipes from the previous occupants Stained sheets Hairs in the bed A TV screen not plugged into anything and with no wire (So just a screen). Windows that do not close so the rooms are very cold. Walls peeling and dirty/discoloured. A partial refund was given when the issues had been pointed out to the staff. However, on requesting the breakfast that came with the B&B room the following morning we were told that we were no longer allowed the meal as we had money back and that the staff could not condone giving a room and breakfast for £45. Overall it was a very poor service and I would avoid this place and pay the extra money to stay somewhere else in Royston that has been cleaned and looked after.

Outside there is a small seating area immediately at the back, and picnic tables on the other side of the car park, under trees. It has free Wifi, and plentiful parking in the car park and along the road. We decided to go out one evening, to try the food. (It has generally good reviews on other comparison sites.) We decided to go for something simple; my partner had the grilled chicken with chips and salad, and I had the vegetarian curry, with cauliflower and red peppers, served with rice and a side salad. The main courses came to £27. We decided to go for puddings - they have a good selection of traditional puddings, and we chose Bakewell tart and ice cream, and Cherry Crumble with custard (£8 each) The food was perfectly acceptable, tasty without being outstanding - in other words, decent pub grub. My partner was very happy with the gfrilled chicken, which was well cooked, and not dry. My curry was very tasty, and the rice perfectly cooked. The puddings were okay - my crumble came with lots of cherry fruit and a generous amount of custard - but my partner's Bakewell Tart was a little underwhelming. Service was efficient and the staff were friendly and accommodating. We'll happily go back for a quiet evening out.
