Out of all the contracting companies I have worked with in my life, I found Brighten Solar to be the most responsive and communicative company I have interacted with. They ALWAYS returned my call, text or email. For our project, I selected them after having 3 site visits by Solar Installation companies. 1 provided a proposal, but never answered follow-up questions. 1 still owes me a promised proposal. However, Brighten Solar turned around a proposal in a timely manner with 2 options that were reasonable and tailored to our needs. The salesman, Spencer, knew the products he offered, the tradeoffs, and addressed all my concerns. They have a great back office staff who handled paperwork, contracts inquiries, and project management well. This back office staff allows their installers to focus on the technical needs in the field. When there was a gap in their schedule, they offered the opportunity to move up the install. Somehow SCE granted Permission To Operate (PTO) within a week and we were able to take advantage of the summer generation. There were some glitches with monitoring Enphase reporting after install, but Jeremy came out twice to adjust the system software and wiring. This was expected due to our unique situation, but it is all dialed in and working great. The salesman performed a 3-month bill review. when I inquired about batteries as a future upgrade, he actually recommended against it based upon our usage and family needs. Even though I'm not a tree hugger, the math has really started to work in favor of rooftop solar and electric vehicles, so I made the jump into both before the end of the tax year. I got proposals from four local solar installers for our house. Most of them were some sales dog-and-pony shows with pretty pictures showing you that installing your system will take 1.2 cars off the road for 25 years, but glossing over the hard facts you really should know before plunking down cash on PV install. I'm an engineer and like to nerd out on price per kilowatt installed, kWh per year, breakeven time, and return on investment, among other things. I had a TON of questions and back and forth with every company for close to a month. I also did a lot of research on forums such as Solar Panel Talk. I went with Brighten Solar for these reason: 1) Price. Brighten had the best proposal in dollars per kilowatt. I normally wouldn't just go with the lowest bid without everything else looking good, which is why the points below are important too. 2) Communication. Jeremy was very easy to get hold of over phone, text or email. He also answered all of my questions fully and without bother. Don't let his French accent throw you off at first! 3) Knowledge. Since Jeremy is an engineer he was able to answer in technical terms instead of sales talk. He warned against a few things other installers wanted to do, like installing in a location that would have shadows during part of the year. He also was one of the only installers to find a way to use our existing 100A panel without a costly upgrade to a new panel. 4) Materials. Brighten proposed top of the line LG panels with Enphase microinverters, whereas other proposals were going with cheaper panels and inverters. 5) Craftsmanship. I spoke to three of the referrals Brighten listed, and looked at some photos and the installs were fairly clean. I made it known I wanted a clean install because I've seen some fugly installs. Sure enough it was a clean install with very little conduit. We had our system permitted, installed, signed off by SCE, and fully producing power in less than 4 weeks. I would highly recommend Brighten Solar for a solar panel installation. This is an owner-operated company, located in Santa Barbara, who installed my solar panels in September 2016. After listening to the sales pitches from 5 other local and national solar providers, I found that Jeremy Favier, owner-operator of Brighten Solar, to be most helpful in explaining the many technical choices involved in choosing solar panels. Some examples of solar choices include micro-inverters vs optimizers, variations is solar panel efficiencies and longevity, type & number of panels to install, & choices re: standard residential (SCE) electric rates vs Time-of-Use (TOU) electric rates. Perhaps because he is an engineer, Jeremy was the only bidder who was able to use all the relevant variables to give me an accurate customized estimate for the number of needed panels to optimized my cost-benefit ratio. Most of the other bids I received recommended excessive panels, at substantially increased cost, and for which there would be no cost recovery. Equally as important as the planning considerations, Brighten Solar completed the project as agreed in the time frame promised. Jeremy recommended the option of removing my Spanish tile & replacing with composite shingles under the solar panels. I am very happy that I selected that option; it allowed a better, more secure installation and is aesthetically much more pleasing. The installation workmanship was first class and without problems. After placing the deposit they followed up well with updates. A few issues arise as we waited for install. Scheduling delays and late materials moved activation 2 months past our original target and into our vacation plans. Inspectors made Brighten redo something and then, after SCE activation, transmitter didn't connect to the app consistently until it was moved. We had solar panels installed two years and as a result, have had very low monthly bills, so when I suddenly received an electricity bill for $645.00 in December, I was stunned.
