Love-A-Bowl
Lauren G.

I love an acai bowl! This cute place is tucked away in Downtown Highland Park. I had no clue what to order and I deferred to the cashier to please tell me what the most popular item was. She recommended the Love-a-Bowl and it was A. Beautiful and B. Delicious! I will say it was also C. Expensive at $16. I'm not too shocked though. That's par for the course at these types of places. It was a great bowl - definitely worth the splurge to treat yourself.

When in need for a healthy treat, we are sure to find it among works of art at Bright Bowls. Located in downtown Highland Park, just by sunset foods. Tucked in a small strip if you're not looking for it. There is plenty of complimentary parking. When you walk in, you're greeted with bright lights, and colorful art. We came by on a Saturday and there was a birthday party/dance party going on in their studio. So it was busier than usual, but it didn't affect the quickness of us receiving our order. We walked in and looked at the menu and around for a little bit before we decided on the Pitaya The Tiger bowl. Which has a Pitaya base with blueberries, banana, pineapple and mango, topped with banana, blueberries and bright granola sprinkled with bee pollen. The swirl was blue spirulina and coconut yogurt. When we received our bowl, it was almost too pretty to eat. It was like artwork! The base was super smooth, with the fruit and granola each bite was delicious, not too sweet, not too bitter. We already can't wait to get another bowl of art soon.

As gorgeous as it is delicious.

Best smoothies on the North Shore! High quality, fresh ingredients. Plus the owners are just the nicest people.

This time, I noticed they had added records and Smashing Pumpkins merch, which I hadn't seen during my last visit. I love that there's always something different to discover here, and I could easily spend a good amount of time just looking around. We arrived right when they opened so we could enjoy everything before the rush. It was calm, cozy, and relaxing, and the staff were super friendly and welcoming. I ordered a hot chocolate and a glazed donut. The hot chocolate was creamy and smooth, with a deep chocolate flavor and subtle dark chocolate notes that added a little bitterness to balance the sweetness. And the donut... wow. This thing was a massive masterpiece! The glaze had that delicate sugary sweetness that gave way with every bite, while the inside was soft, fluffy, and buttery. I loved the contrast between the thin coating on the outside and the tender dough inside. It was sweet and satisfying without being too heavy. But dipping the donut into the hot chocolate took everything to another level. Honestly, I couldn't have picked a better pairing. Madame Zuzu's keeps surprising me every time I visit, I could sit back, enjoy the surroundings, and listen to the live music for hours.

Iced Earl Grey with a spot of milk.

I love their shrimp. Favorite way is in Laska soup. Yuba fried rice with shrimp is great. Need little more seasoning for my taste. Ban mi sandwich is great. When we walked in there were a few open tables so we sat ourselves but a member of the waitstaff quickly stopped by to welcome us and made sure we received menus. Alice and Friends does vegan food with an Asian twist. We started with fried mushrooms with a Korean sweet sour sauce. The mushrooms were crispy but a little tough. I didn't personally like the sauce but I think that is a personal taste situation as my dining companions were fine with it. One person ordered the mushroom ban mi sandwich, another ordered the Mac and cheese and I had the corn chowder with corn bread. The person who ordered the ban mi sandwich stated it was good but the jalapeños on it were very spicy. I had a bite of the Mac and cheese with the faux bacon and it was very good. I enjoyed my chowder but fun the corn bread to be dense and oily. It was easy to have conversation during dinner and the dining room was comfortable. We'd likely return again. I know If I do I'll order the Mac and cheese.
