Better than expected, given the mixed reviews. We rather enjoyed our stay here…read more We stayed for three nights during UChicago's homecoming/parent weekend, as all the hotels closer to campus were either booked solid or significantly higher in price. The idea of being in Chinatown was appealing, and originally we didn't intend to have a car for the weekend so the less-than-convenient parking situation wasn't a concern when we booked. We later decided to rent a car - more on that later. We knew that we would be arriving late on the first night. I called the hotel in advance to confirm to them that we would be coming, and they promised that the room would be available. When we finally walked through the front door, we were greeted by a friendly gentleman who was just locking up the doors for the evening (you need to use your key to enter the lobby after 11:00pm). The person at the front desk checked us in quickly, explained the housekeeping policies, and we were off to our room. The room was small but not cramped. Everything was clean and there were no funky odors. The queen bed was comfortable and the AC worked efficiently. Lighting was sufficient. There were two armchairs and a small desk and chair and a minifridge as well. There was no recessed closet, but rather a wardrobe that took up a little of the floor space. The bathroom sink was a pedestal rather than a counter, so there was no place to put out our toiletries except for a small glass shelf under the mirror. No bathtub (which we prefer) and the shower was spacious with good water temperature and pressure. For a place to sleep, it was more than adequate. Now about the parking: the hotel doesn't have a lot of their own, and doesn't offer valet parking either. They suggest parking at the big lot down at Cermak and Wentworth, but it doesn't offer in-and-out privileges. However, we found that it wasn't too difficult finding street parking in the neighborhood, especially when we were returning to the hotel after most of the restaurants had closed. In fact, on all three nights we were able to find a spot just one street over on 22nd Place - and because of our room location, we could see our car from the hotel window! Our room rate was quite good as compared to other rooms during our stay, some of which were in less appealing or convenient areas (our daily trips to the UChicago campus were only about 15 minutes). This is certainly a place where we'd consider staying again.

My friend and I stayed at the Jaslin Hotel, located in Chinatown. We took a chance in staying here…read more Both of us experienced good service from the staff members. We did experience a room change, however, it was quickly mitigated. It served its purpose with what you needed. They don't offer too much since it is a smaller hotel, but it does have basic amenities such as shampoo and conditioner. I like how close it is to eateries. The metro is close by so it was convenient to take every where.

My husband and I were going to see a band play nearby and needed a hotel in the area. At first,…read morethe Carleton was fully booked. Later, a suite opened up. It was way more space than we needed and a little pricier than I had wanted for just one night, when we were hardly going to be there. However, it was the only hotel in the area with positive reviews. First, the building is absolutely beautiful. The area, Pleasant District in Oak Park is indeed pleasant, and part of an upscale, older suburb that feels much more urban than suburban. When we pulled up, it was a bit unclear where to unload and check in. My husband stayed with the car while I ran in to check in. The woman who checked me in was friendly but mainly she just answered my questions. She didn't offer much information except for parking. When I asked for a late checkout, I was given 11:30 instead of 11:00. She did direct me to a nearby coffeehouse when I asked where to get coffee in the morning.. Our room was lovely, though a bit outdated. I liked being able to look down at the cafes below though the window. Some of the old furniture was very stately. The bathroom could have used a paint job. The toilet flushed like a public bathroom toilet, which wasn't cute at all. I think my biggest issue with the hotel was when someone loudly knocked on our door at 11:07 in the morning as we were packing to leave. It was an employee who asked, "You checkin' out or you stayin' over?" in a rather aggressive tone. I told her we were granted a late checkout. She apologized, though only slightly. Even if we had not been given a late checkout, it should have been a polite phone call around 11:15 reminding us of the checkout time and thanking us for staying. I truly wanted to like this old hotel in a special part of town, but I think they really could ramp up customer service. Aside from our rude awakening, I think a friendly greeting would have helped. I also think a few things like fresh water or coffee in the lobby, a or perhaps even a couple water bottles in our room.

I was excited to stay here close to my daughter's new apartment we were moving her into. The rating on Hotels.com is 9.2. No way this is a 9.2 hotel. We checked in with four people and had reserved 2 rooms. They were both the old motel rooms apparently. We checked out both, one smelled horrible like dirty diapers, had crumbs in the drawer, dirt on the floor, the window had dust and dirt behind the curtain. We looked at two other rooms, they were just as bad. The man at the desk gave us the vibe that we were interrupting his meal. He upgraded to inside the main hotel. When I opened the door, there was suitcases and clothes making it apparent this was occupied. Went back to front desk and got another (5th room now...) key and decided at this point, it's not going to be much better. It was better than the garden suites, but old and tired. Remodeled in like 1993? Won't be back which is a shame because this could be a great hotel with some decent housekeepers who actually clean and some upgrades to rooms.

I thought this was just going to be a wonderful location, but the service, the room, and the amenities were all above expectations. We were traveling midweek, and were welcomed at the front desk by Gabby who got us checked in very quickly, and Willie who was kind enough to bring our bags directly to our room. Once we were in the room.. wow! The view was immediately eye catching, a study in the corner room (401), a large tv, desk, a makeup area, and a large bathroom. There is a bench seat at the window, so you can even sit and enjoy the view of the Midway and the unique buildings on the UChicago campus. The hotel is within walking distance to the Presidential center, and it's well shaded along the Midway. Since we spent a long day at the Presidential center, we stopped downstairs for dinner - the restaurant was excellent for both dinner and breakfast the next morning. I can't say enough good things about this hotel, and the wonderful staff. I look forward to returning to the area.

There was also a separate study with two comfy leather chairs and a whole wall of books for reading. The hotel also has a nice restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. We ate breakfast and dinner there and loved it. The walk to the Obama Presidential Center was only a few blocks east. Highly recommend this place!

The area was decent and I never felt like my family it I were ever in danger. Lots of homeless people coming in the side door and using the bathroom and helping themselves to breakfast though lol. One thing I did think was weird was the 2nd elevator that went down to the parking garage directly and a room key wasn't needed until after 9pm to use it. Anyone off the street could have come right up in the building. Weird... The property was overall kind of dirty and run down. Beds were comfortable, tv was good. Hair in the bath tub. The AC was set at 75 when we got there and it was very stuffy and musty. We set the AC down to 65, out our stuff down and headed out to dinner. Came back an hour and 20 mins later and it was only down to 74. Few hours later it finally got to 68. Stains all over the walls. Grimy. If you have business in Hyde Park, or just want to avoid paying the high room and parking rates in…read moredowntown Chicago, you could do worse than this place. We've stayed here three times in the past year, and we're generally happy with our experiences thus far. This is no Hyatt or Ritz and so we set our expectations appropriately; nevertheless there is some room for improvement. What's good: - Free parking! Woo-hoo! I once stayed at the nearby Hyatt Place hotel on 53rd and I think I paid $40 a night to park. There is a small covered parking area, but it fills up by the early evening. There is plenty of outdoor parking. - Location. It is just off Lake Shore Drive, so getting into the city is pretty easy. Some rooms have a view of the lake, which is nice, but since you're also facing LSD the traffic noise can be bothersome. It's just a short walk to the lakefront and Promontory Point, which makes for a pleasant stroll. It's reasonably close to the University of Chicago, but it's probably farther than most people would prefer to walk. The Museum of Science and Industry is about a mile away and is an easy walk if you're up for it. - The rooms were fairly bright during the day, thanks for the large windows in our room. At night the lighting was better than average. The beds were comfortable (a little firmer than I'd like) and the pillows were soft, but small. There is a coffee machine and a mini-fridge, but no in-room safe. - Staff was mostly friendly and accommodating. Housekeeping was efficient and thorough. - Air conditioning worked well, but was a bit on the noisy side. However, the drone of the AC at night helped drown out the traffic noise too. - The quality of the free breakfast was pretty decent. - Self-serve coffee machine in the lobby makes mochas, cappuccinos, lattes, etc. any time of the day. What could be better: - The entrance to the hotel isn't actually marked, and since there is another hotel attached to this one, it's confusing as to where to go to check in. The first time I came here I drove right past the entrance because I couldn't tell where to go. - The breakfast area is small and gets crowded during peak hours. For the number of guests that can be there, especially on weekends, they often had trouble keeping food items in stock, and the line for the pancake machine was long. The one woman who was hustling around was remarkably cheerful though - props to her for keeping her cool while working under such stressful conditions. - There's not enough seating for breakfast. Many people were awkwardly sitting in the lounge chairs and benches because there were no tables available. - The alarm is some kind of special hotel clock that doesn't allow anyone to adjust the time, only the alarm time. It supposed to sync with some kind of atomic clock server to display the correct time, but it clearly wasn't working as it was off by over 10 minutes. Kind of annoying, and we eventually unplugged it since it was basically useless. - The exercise room had a funky odor, almost like burning rubber. Lighting was poor. The water dispenser wasn't working, and the strength training machine did not have several of the attachments necessary to actually use it. - The bathroom is a little small, and the water pressure through the shower head was somewhat weak. During a heavy rainstorm there was a lot of gurgling coming from the bathtub and toilet, and we worried that something was going to start backing up. This was a little unexpected since we were on the second floor when this happened. So not spectacular but not bad either. For the value, it is definitely a good place to stay.

First, they made me put a $350 deposit down and told me that if I did not cancel at the 2 weeks to go time point I would then be liable for the cost of my full stay if they did not fill the room. Then, I learned from reviews, and after my wife talked to the owner, that the "breakfast" part of the deal was not quite the B&B experience I'm used to. It's more like a continental set-up with like hot scrambled eggs. Not the home-cooked interesting breakfast items served by the house, different items each day. This was not disclosed to me when I called to make the reservation. Then, when I decided to cancel (mainly for those reasons), 3 weeks out from my date, the house withheld $50 of my $350.
