There's a closet with clothing steamers (a must have hotel item for me!), irons and DISTILLED WATER. Anyone who is serious about steaming uses distilled water to do it. (Thank you for knowing this, Publishing House!) I went directly to this closet to get myself a steamer! There's a kitchen where you can make yourself a pot of tea (or coffee) any time, a fridge you can put your food in, and a beautifully appointed living room that you can hang out in (with, or without, your friends). I don't usually eat breakfast but the breakfast (included in your stay!) is too good to pass up! Glorious cooked breakfasts plus fruit, granola, yogurt, and homemade baked goods. The staff is made up of talented and attractive staff who are also kind and helpful. The Publishing House is my dream come true. If I could find a place like it in New York, Toronto, and LA I'd be 10X happier to travel to those cities.

Quiet, exquisitely comfortable bed, spotlessly clean and uniquely decorated (in all the right ways). We felt like we were guests in the amazing home of a contemporary art collector. The pantry was a treat for quick snacks and refrigerator space. Breakfasts were inventive, delicious and health conscious. The "public" areas were spacious enough to share with other guests easily, nothing like a hotel lobby lounge. The hosts were great with communicating check-in and checkout, as well as friendly tips about the front door during a humid weekend. The list of restaurants and local shops was beyond useful. We also enjoyed happy hour in the affiliated restaurant below. This was our first trip to Chicago in a long time, we had such a good time, we'll be back in the fall and the Publishing House B&B will be our first choice to stay.

Found it to be a beautiful B&B, rebuilt within the shell of a townhouse, on a quiet street near Old Town. Got the best room 301 in front with a balcony. Great view of the city toward Willis Tower. There are also decks in back and on the roof. It was so quiet I thought we must be the only ones there till we went down to the free continental breakfast and saw it was fully booked. Staff was friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay there again.

So fear not, my fellow snackers. As far as the vibe, let's just say the founder must have made randomness their full-time job. There is art all over the place, plus collections of all shapes and sizes. Two dozen antique cameras? Got it. 15 or so vintage thermoses on a shelf? Yep. Rock collections, statues, maps, and more? There is just stuff to look at EVERYWHERE. And I mean that in the best way possible. My wife booked us a little one-night getaway, and Ashley and the team made the whole thing a treat. Smooth sailing from start to finish, friendly, accommodating, and the room was our cozy little home away from home, even if only for a night. Completely walkable to all kinds of fun and shopping. Zero complaints. I can't say I've been to a place like Ray's before. It's a community. Just check the common rooms where you'll find board games, books about art and the neighborhood, and people just chilling out. It's unique, and we need more uniqueness these days. It is very heavy on the sauce, but that's something I really enjoy. Very crispy classic Smashburger exterior, with juicy middle. The mansion is stunningly beautiful and the ambiance transported us far from the daily grind. Breakfasts exceeded expectations. Snacks, including homemade banana nut bread, and a large variety of beverages are always available. HVAC and shower temperatures could have been better but those issues pale in comparison to the total experience. The mansion was built in the 1870's so retrofitting can't be perfect. Our stay, however, was close to perfect. The location of the villa could not be better for exploring Chicago away from downtown shopping districts. We will return. Highly recommended!

It has been updated and featured beautiful furnishings and artwork. Don, who is the owner, was a gracious and proud host. He makes the check-in process easy and sends guests daily updates via text.. Although a continental breakfast was provided each day, a cook prepared breakfast tacos and tortillas our first two mornings. Both were very tasty. The kitchen is available around the clock if you want to make a panni sandwich. They also had housemade lasagna in the refrigerator for a quick 2-minute reheating in the microwave. Our charming unit is probably one of the smallest in the building, but it was perfect for us, as we were visiting relatives nearby. It included a bed, desk, bath and fireplace. It did have an outdoor patio and direct access to the complex's hot tub. The unit's shower is in the hallway near the front door, not in the bath itself. That was odd, but we made it work. Staying in late February, our $189 night rate was extremely fair for what we received. We plan to return soon.

First, they made me put a $350 deposit down and told me that if I did not cancel at the 2 weeks to go time point I would then be liable for the cost of my full stay if they did not fill the room. Then, I learned from reviews, and after my wife talked to the owner, that the "breakfast" part of the deal was not quite the B&B experience I'm used to. It's more like a continental set-up with like hot scrambled eggs. Not the home-cooked interesting breakfast items served by the house, different items each day. This was not disclosed to me when I called to make the reservation. Then, when I decided to cancel (mainly for those reasons), 3 weeks out from my date, the house withheld $50 of my $350. This was not disclosed to me when I called to make the reservation. The lady said it was on the "small print" of the email, and indeed it was. BAD PRACTICE! Maybe if you are a frequent visitor and you've enjoyed your stay, great. If you're coming from out of town and never went there, consider these practices. NOT GOOD.

Brother Ezekiel was our host and he was so kind. I was a little concerned that once we arrived we might be expected to follow some house rules or curfews, but that worry was unnecessary. Once we checked in we were free to come and go as we pleased and our apartment had a private entrance. Our breakfast was quietly delivered by the monks and placed on a table at the entrance to the apartment. Aside from check-in, we didn't see or hear the monks at all until our last day when we decided to attend one of the prayer sessions. Hearing the monks chant was a treat. The breakfasts were so generous! One morning we shared a huge platter of sliced fruit, blueberry pancakes, sausage (vegetarian for my friend, regular for me), yogurt, eggs, coffee and orange juice. Don't even get me started on the next day's french toast! We didn't have internet in our room, but our iphones worked just fine and Bridgeport coffee was just down the street (great chai!) and they have WiFi. There is a Buddhist temple next door and we loved leaving the monastery only to see the prayer flags and catch the light scent of incense as we walked to catch a ride to our event. We stayed in the Loft apartment: $165 per night, 3 bedrooms (two full and one twin), a breakfast nook, a kitchenette, nice bathroom with shower and a sitting area with a couch and three chairs. It was lovely-parking and breakfast included. The rooms have alarm clocks and there is a desk for setting up your computer if you need to get some work done. My understanding is that there is another apartment that is the same price, but has two bedrooms, a pull out sofa and a full kitchen stocked with supplies to make your very own breakfast if you would like and it also has free parking. The neighborhood is modest, but nice and we (two women) felt safe and comfortable wandering home late at night. Public transportation is close, but we caught cabs on Halsted in the morning because we were crunched for time. This place is such treasure...it is simple, yet nice and even though we are not religious we loved the idea that were were helping to support the monastery. Again, Brother Ezekiel was as gracious as one would expect a monk and an innkeeper to be. We will be back together, with family, solo or with other friends. This is a steal of a deal. We've joked that I shouldn't write this for fear that the secret will get out! :)

The food was brunch with frittata, French toast, bacon, sausage, roasted vegetables, butternut squash and fresh fruit. The food looked delicious. The butternut squash was my favorite. Now for the downside, my bf and I were a few of the last people to get our first plate. When we were getting food, most of the trays were almost empty and they didn't have enough food. It's a buffet and shouldn't there be enough food for all. My bf didn't get the frittata or bacon. Usually there's more than enough food and then some. People asked and they weren't making more. A friend wanted more sausage links for his son and they had to make a couple links. Disappointed because usually there should be second helping and at least enough for first helping. So I ended up with a stomach ache and not feeling well. I hadn't left yet. I rushed home. Found out there were a couple more people had the same feeling after leaving. We were looking to try the Sunday buffet. I don't think I will now.
